NFL 2017 Post-Draft Offseason

I may have to watch it just for Gerald McCoy, who is both hilarious and an utterly great guy.

Dirk Koetter does not bring Rex Ryan-level entertainment to the table.

This is a good thing.

It's so hard to like anything that comes out of OU, but Kit and I both like McCoy. He's a good guy.

Kit always ends up drafting a rookie from Hard Knocks on her fantasy teams. I don't think we're drafting defensive players this year or she would draft that middle linebacker.

I watched, and enjoyed, the show. Next week should be fun on here what with "who will win the kicking battle" predominant in the teaser.

That linebacker dude (UDFA - Burrough?) has a favorite word, and it has 4 letters.

I just watched it; it was on Youtube. I, for one, was entertained as hell. Gerald McCoy is an absolute great player, and he's just a great human being, and everybody loves the guy. Friendliest guy ever when he's not on the field, at which point he's notably less friendly.

I loved how they played dramatic music in the bits at the end where Jameis Winston underthrew deep passes, got over-excited, and made some terrible throws that became turnovers. That's not "drama", that's "Jameis Winston". It's what he does; he'll give you ten amazing plays a game, but you'll never know which kind of amazing they're going to be.

Love the UDFA LB. That being said, he's not displacing Kwon Alexander, and they drafted an MLB in I think the 4th round this year they like a lot. The guy's got a tough road ahead.

I will never enjoy watching those bits where people get cut from a football team. It's just too depressing.

That's the part I most want to watch every year, but you're right, enjoy is not the word for it.

But that is what camp and preseason is about. People call preseason boring because the starters hardly play and the game doesn't count. The first is true, and the second is true only on the team level. On the individual level for the guys further down the roster, those games are personal Super Bowls.

That's where most of the drama is in Hard Knocks and it goes hand in hand with the longshots who happen to make the team.

Hard Knocks is The Bachelor for football fans.

Yeah, the stories of guys fighting for a spot, or even a starting position is what makes it something my wife even enjoys.

I like watching the guys fighting a a spot; I just don't like watching them lose the spot. Those little moments where you see guys just crushed as their dreams fade away? It's painful to watch.

Next week is going to feature Miko Grimes. Everybody start cringing ahead of time.

Also, I'm assuming episode 1 was out for everybody as a teaser, and for the others I'd need HBO of some sort or a likely illegal substitute?

Chris Conte?

That's my guess, but maybe not.

I forgot to mention, the Browns have announced Brock Osweiler as their starter tonight.

Kizer will be starting by midseason, but at least we get some Oz time now! So excited!

Watson looked mediocre in the Texans pre-season game last night. Upgrade!

Very offended Legion didn't bother to tell me he was in St. Paul; just went out for a quick break and took a Pokemon Go gym, and one of the Pokemon in the gym was by "Bort4All".

You could have called, man.

I watched the tape, Oz is a starting QB in the NFL. Not a good one, but I did see him start football games last year.

I don't hang out with Pokemon players.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how disastrous will Jay Cutler be in Miami?

A solid 5, like he has been his whole career.

2--as in after he goes 0-2, they put in Matt Moore.

On a scale of 1-10 how bad will Ryan Mallett be?

I'm thinking a seven, as in...

Looks like it. It's probably end up on YouTube five minutes after it ends next Tuesday so maybe look there first.

Even if you sub to HBO for the duration, it's probably worth it.

P.S. Koetter really needs to step up his TV game. The scene at Jameis' house in Alabama showed more personality than I think Koetter will show for the entire "Hard Knocks" run.

No "looks like." It's all there, Female Doggoes!

SCENE 1
Set in auditorium; coach addresses players, most of whom look attentive. One wears a robe.

"Teams are like rockets. Most of the work has to happen beforehand. Once the rocket launches, it's incredibly difficult to change its course mid-flight.

"That's what we're doing right now. We're launching the 2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers."

Rockets also do this:

This is going to be great.

Update: I'm 20 minutes in, and it's better than I dreamed it would be.

Already, Dirk Koetter has told Jameis that he has to make sure he doesn't lose any games for them. Way to plant that seed, Dirk.

Also, Jon Gruden pops up in the episode because he was at the Bucs complex for a press conference about his upcoming induction into the team's ring of honor. Afterwards, Gruden visits Jameis in the Bucs' QB room and tells him -- no kidding -- to "keep pounding."

Which, unintentional or not, is the motto of a certain Charlotte-based NFC South rival.

Another update: First episode was pretty good. Gerald McCoy is a hoot.

Next week, we get Robert Aguayo and Miko Grimes. Oh boy oh boy oh boy.

That gif reminds me of an experience I had with a MK. 19 grenade launcher in infantry school down in North Carolina. I just laughed so hard.

At least the defense didn't suck.

Mallett, though, is a garbage fire.

Zeke gets six games, which will probably wind up to be two after appeal is my guess. Roger Goodell must want to get fired; he's now pissed of Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones.

Uh

Bills trade Sammy Watkins and a sixth-round draft pick to the Rams for CB E.J. Gaines and a second-round draft pick.

They also Bills traded CB Ronald Darby to the Eagles for Jordan Matthews and a third-round draft pick.

:wow:

When you want to send Watkins packing but you still need 900 receiving yards.

Can the Rams cut Tavon Austin now?

garion333 wrote:

Treating this as a real question and not just LOLs, but probably not. Cutting Austin would generate $5m in dead money, and the Rams are dead last in the NFL in salary cap space, with about $3.8m free.

That number will actually go up after this trade, as Gaines was on the books for $1.8 mil of salary, and Watkins will bring only a $800k salary to the Rams ledger (his prorated bonus staying in Buffalo), so on the balance, they should gain $1m of cap space. Still not enough, though, to swallow Tavon's would-be dead money.

And I think getting that extra $1m was probably part of the trade motivation, just to give the team a little bit more operational room.

Good gawd, why is Les Snead still employed?

Good trade for everyone; the Rams get an oft-injured guy who is still the only real viable #1 WR prospect they've had in years, the Eagles get a better secondary, and the Bills get likely more WR production with a guy who's decent and can stay healthy, plus they have loads of picks next year so they can replace Taylor.

I don't think it was a very good trade from the Rams' perspective. Sure, I'm on board with bringing in Watkins, you need someone for Goff to throw at, and he's as talented as you're going to conjure up at this point.

But as always, you trade for contracts, not players, and Watkins' contract is up after this year. Trading a 2nd round pick for the rights to 1 season of Sammy Watkins... that part, I'm not on board with. I'm assuming the team has to have discussed a contract extension with Watkins, and if so and if the deal is team friendly, then maybe it's not quite as bad... but still, the trade is a 2nd round pick plus (one year contract of) a cornerback, for one year of Watkins.
