I moved to DC in 1998 and left in 2005, which basically take you from Snyder buying the team through a big part of the "pay too much for over-the-hill veterans" dumpster fire era, and I enjoyed every moment of that. I'd gladly root against that team for their racist as hell nickname even if the owner wasn't an epic asshat in all things he does.

To be honest, I wish DC would keep Cousins. Washington-with-Cousins is pretty much a guaranteed W for Carolina.

If I were a fan of a rival NFC South team, I would be laughing myself to death.
This would be like the Titans bringing back Floyd Reese. Or the Rams firing their whole staff but keeping Les Snead.
Just because I'm a fan of a rival franchise doesn't mean I can't sometimes step back and commend a team for really being innovative and making the perfect move. So, in that spirit, I'd like to welcome Marty Hurney back to the division as the interim GM of the Carolina Panthers.
Here's hoping the team goes all-in on this innovation and makes the hire permanent.

Football Outsiders Almanac 2017 is out, so it's time to get your analytics on, yo. Some highlights from the Bucs chapter:
-They stomp down pretty hard on the O.J. Howard hype and point out that only two rookie TEs have even hit 600 yards since 2000; Jeremy Shockey and John Carlson.
-They expect regression to the mean in things like getting turnovers on defense and success using play-action on offense, which don't tend to be consistent year-to-year.
-Chris Conte is amazing. He made his average run tackle 10.5 yards down the field, which, his position aside, ranked him 69th in the league. The fun part? He was better against the run than the pass. His average tackle on passing plays was 16.1 yards down the field. More than SIXTEEN yards down the field!
I suspect Chris Conte is really just a alternate-universe Josh McCown who decided to play safety badly instead of QB, and yet still somehow sticks around for years.

Cowboys WR Lucky Whitehead was arrested for shoplifting, and then a warrant was issued for failure to appear in court.
The Cowboys cut Whitehead, because they don't tolerate such things from non-Ezekiel Elliotts.
Except, oops, the guy that the police arrested? Was not Lucky Whitehead. Just some guy who falsely provided Whitehead's info when arrested.
All charges were dropped against Whitehead, the warrant was lifted.
Lucky does not wish to return to Dallas.
The NFLPA is looking into the situation.
Oh, and the weird prequel to all of this:

CFT: New medical study finds CTE in brains of 48 of 53 deceased college football players
In a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Tuesday, the Associated Press reports, researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine and the VA Boston Healthcare System examined the brains of 202 deceased men who had played football at various levels. Of those, 53 played college football; 48 of them were diagnosed postmortem with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE as it’s more commonly known.Even more startling, 110 of the 111 brains of former NFL players studied had CTE. Conversely, three of 14 brains of individuals whose highest level of football was high school were diagnosed with it.
The college number is what is most concerning. To be fair, these are mostly donated by players and family that noticed symptoms. But if we are seeing it at such a high level in college, where it affects many, many more players, including thousands that have zero plans to play professional football, it doesn't bode well for the future of the sport.
Honestly, when I read these articles, I got that same feeling in the pit of my stomach that I had after watching Concussion. I'm in the camp of those that would never let a son of mine play football now. It's one thing to sat that NFL player know the risks and get paid well for accepting it. I don't believe the same case can be made for college athletes.
How long before schools begin shutting down football programs purely because of the risk of CTE?
As I said before, I will still watch and cheer for the Chiefs this season. I love watching football, and Madden is my most played video game right now. But I can no longer defend football as a sport to anyone that would question me about it. I don't know if I can stay a fan long term, or if I'm just going to ride it out.
My wife is not a sports fan, but has no issue letting me take of the TV on Sundays or for any big games I want to watch. But it may be harder and harder to watch football in front of her now. I'm hoping for the Jayhawks to take a step towards respectability this season, but the idea of most of their players suffering CTE, even though they most likely never get paid makes it hard to justify. Sure, they are getting money for degrees, as long as they haven't ruined their brains.
And when is someone going to admit that CTE had at least some role in OJ's crimes?
