That whole situation is a joke. The team has screwed up the process over the last two years.

Kirk will be gone in 2018 and they will suffer for it.

Hope so. There are few things more delicious than living in the DC area when the Washington Football Team sucks.

Maybe being back in Dallas when the Cowboys suck would be better, but, other than that, hard to imagine anything better.

I moved to DC in 1998 and left in 2005, which basically take you from Snyder buying the team through a big part of the "pay too much for over-the-hill veterans" dumpster fire era, and I enjoyed every moment of that. I'd gladly root against that team for their racist as hell nickname even if the owner wasn't an epic asshat in all things he does.

Leave it to DC to snatch the Spotlight of Ineptitude away from the Panthers.

To be honest, I wish DC would keep Cousins. Washington-with-Cousins is pretty much a guaranteed W for Carolina.

I mean the only reason I listen to sports talk radio at all here is drinking in the sweet sweet tears.

Living in Minnesota when the Packers are good? Actually what would be fab would be living in Minnesota when the Packers win the Super Bowl in the Vikings stadium.

Make it happen Green Bay!

So, per PFT, the Panthers are looking at Marty Hurney for their interim GM. Seems like a candidate with some appropriate experience, as he was fired as Panthers GM five years ago.

Oh lord no I hope not.

Gettleman was hired to get the Panthers out of the cap hell that Hurney created by overpaying veterans.

Gettleman, after getting the Panthers out of cap hell, was then fired for refusing to overpay for veterans not named Kalil and for being an asshole about it.

It's hard to see the Panthers as one of the more dysfunctional teams in the South -- we share the division with the Bucs, the Aints and the 28-3s, after all -- but here we are. Sigh.

When Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen both get nine-year contracts with $75 million guaranteed, it'll all be OK.

If I were a fan of a rival NFC South team, I would be laughing myself to death.

This would be like the Titans bringing back Floyd Reese. Or the Rams firing their whole staff but keeping Les Snead.

Just because I'm a fan of a rival franchise doesn't mean I can't sometimes step back and commend a team for really being innovative and making the perfect move. So, in that spirit, I'd like to welcome Marty Hurney back to the division as the interim GM of the Carolina Panthers.

Here's hoping the team goes all-in on this innovation and makes the hire permanent.

It could be worse for the Panthers. They could have hired ...

... no, this is pretty bad. Hurney's going to burn through all of the Panthers' cap room like Steve Smith's tweet burned through the interwebs.

It's also a periodic reminder that the Panthers are a family business for both good and ill.

My team has a baseball guy running the front office and I feel sorry for the Panthers.

Dammit I'm trying to enjoy this here and sympathy from a Browns fan is going to make it really hard for me to keep giggling.

You heard it here first, grab Gabbert before the rest do as he's the future in Arizona.

You can bet your ass I'm gonna use one of those additional dynasty roster spots to nab Carson Palmer's heir apparent.

Are you sure you didn't mean "hair apparent"? That's really the highlight of Gabbert's career and the one place he could likely supplant Palmer.

We'll always have 2015, Blaine.

Football Outsiders was notably less impressed, giving your binky a -85 DYAR and -15.6% DVOA in 2015. Now, to be fair, that means they rated him as the 31st-best QB in both categories that year, which means Blaine Gabbert was at least one spot better than usual.

I would defend Gabs, but after 6 long years, he's officially

It's preseason for the Fox and CBS crews, too.

We all heard that Jim Nantz will be working with Tony Romo and no Pheeeeeel Simms. (Romo can't be worse, can he?)

Today's news is that Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis, Fox's No. 2 team, is picking up a third wheel (Jay Cutler). Also, Moose Johnston has been demoted to working with Chris Myers, who might be the stupidest person calling football this side of Pheeeeeeel. That probably means Kenny Albert and Ronde Barber will be tag-teaming. Meh.

I mention the Johnston/Meyers pairing only because they'll probably spend most of their fall shuttling between Tampa and Charlotte. That'll make me wish the Panthers play in the AFC.

Now that Sims is gone, I'm pretty much in love with the AFC's commentating. But, really, I'm all about Red Zone anyway.

I'm not sure Chris Myers is awake enough to be awful. He's the least-enthusiastic football guy out there.

Kenny Albert/Ronde sounds a lot better than Chris Myers/Ronde to me. I don't mind Kenny Albert at all.

Football Outsiders Almanac 2017 is out, so it's time to get your analytics on, yo. Some highlights from the Bucs chapter:

-They stomp down pretty hard on the O.J. Howard hype and point out that only two rookie TEs have even hit 600 yards since 2000; Jeremy Shockey and John Carlson.

-They expect regression to the mean in things like getting turnovers on defense and success using play-action on offense, which don't tend to be consistent year-to-year.

-Chris Conte is amazing. He made his average run tackle 10.5 yards down the field, which, his position aside, ranked him 69th in the league. The fun part? He was better against the run than the pass. His average tackle on passing plays was 16.1 yards down the field. More than SIXTEEN yards down the field!

I suspect Chris Conte is really just a alternate-universe Josh McCown who decided to play safety badly instead of QB, and yet still somehow sticks around for years.

Trying to decide, as a Ravens fan, if this season is worth watching this year.

A friend who follows the Steelers sent me an article about Dixon being out for the year with an ACL tear. I responded by telling her that I would be sending Bryant a box of home made brownies right before his next mandatory piss test.

Not liking how this season is shaping up.

You say that every year, Paleo. It's such a Ravens fan thing to do.

and now with a weaker team ....?

I feel like we ought to at least acknowledge the existence of these new findings. Sorry for the buzzkill, once again.

CFT: New medical study finds CTE in brains of 48 of 53 deceased college football players

In a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Tuesday, the Associated Press reports, researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine and the VA Boston Healthcare System examined the brains of 202 deceased men who had played football at various levels. Of those, 53 played college football; 48 of them were diagnosed postmortem with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE as it’s more commonly known.

Even more startling, 110 of the 111 brains of former NFL players studied had CTE. Conversely, three of 14 brains of individuals whose highest level of football was high school were diagnosed with it.

The college number is what is most concerning. To be fair, these are mostly donated by players and family that noticed symptoms. But if we are seeing it at such a high level in college, where it affects many, many more players, including thousands that have zero plans to play professional football, it doesn't bode well for the future of the sport.

Honestly, when I read these articles, I got that same feeling in the pit of my stomach that I had after watching Concussion. I'm in the camp of those that would never let a son of mine play football now. It's one thing to sat that NFL player know the risks and get paid well for accepting it. I don't believe the same case can be made for college athletes.

How long before schools begin shutting down football programs purely because of the risk of CTE?

As I said before, I will still watch and cheer for the Chiefs this season. I love watching football, and Madden is my most played video game right now. But I can no longer defend football as a sport to anyone that would question me about it. I don't know if I can stay a fan long term, or if I'm just going to ride it out.

My wife is not a sports fan, but has no issue letting me take of the TV on Sundays or for any big games I want to watch. But it may be harder and harder to watch football in front of her now. I'm hoping for the Jayhawks to take a step towards respectability this season, but the idea of most of their players suffering CTE, even though they most likely never get paid makes it hard to justify. Sure, they are getting money for degrees, as long as they haven't ruined their brains.

And when is someone going to admit that CTE had at least some role in OJ's crimes?

2016 8-8

"Oh my team only went .500 last year, woe is me!"

My two teams went 5-27 last year. Get on my level.
