Rolling Thunder is my favorite arcade game of all time. I played it in arcades, I played it on one of those weird, bootleg NES cartridges from Tengen. I even played it on the PSP, when it appeared in Namco Museum. Namco Museum is back, and coming to the Switch with Rolling Thunder, Rolling Thunder 2 and Splatterhouse. That sort of combination almost makes me forget the exorbitant $30 price tag for a download-only collection of twenty-year-old games.

Well, I won't forget it, but I can ignore it, which I will do for my game of the week: Rolling Thunder, et al., also known as Namco Museum.

Pyre is no-doubt the favorite of many solo gamers this week. It's new from indie developer Supergiant Games, developers of Bastion and Transistor. I was a fan of the former, but I just could not grok the latter and therefore could not get into it. The game has my curiosity, though its trailers seem even less decipherable than I found optimal strategies in their prior release.

GWJer Muraii has been singing all of the praises about Fortnite, Epic's new team-based survival-defense-shooter-craft. Is that a genre? Well it's a genre now, and at least half of that descriptor kind of has my interest lowered. While I don't mind setting up defenses and traps for waves of enemies – it is part of what made Bioshock 2 and Gears of War 3's horde mode great, after all – I'm not big into Minecraft-ian resource gathering. Even so, it looks like it could be the Overwatch of PvE games.

Fortnite gets my pick of the week.

I like the look of Aven Colony this week. It’s a sci-fi city-builder with that nice future sheen. There’s a campaign mode to learn the ropes; I can’t wait to have a narrative reason to build 3 water purifiers or whatnot.

I'm curious how Pyre and Aven Colony turn out. The former because I dig what Supergiant does, even if I bounced hard off of Transistor, while the latter is a city builder and I'm always interested in those. Didn't realize AC is coming out on console though. Cool!

Canadian Football 2017 looks ... terrible. But at least someone is trying to beat Madden!

I'm still holding out for an XFL game.

Are there officially too many PC games released on a weekly basis yet?

Yes. Absolutely.

As a fan of city builders, I'm definitely interested in Aven Colony and will be watching for reviews.

Won't be a big favourite over in the US, but I've been watching a couple of LP series of Rugby League Live 4, and it does look very good. Not as glitzy as Madden, but then RL is like the NFL. Albeit with no armour and players actually tackling rather than headbutting each other.

Looks good. I assumed by the name it was a junk sports game, but this is pretty good looking. I'll be downloading the demo once it drops on Steam.

I've been watching LPs from JarradPlays, if you want to see how they go,

The progression looks a little odd in Create-a-Player mode....he seemed to start at a rating of 41 in u-20 competitions (Holden Cup) when everyone else was mid 50's or so.

Me too.

Overcooked is coming out on July 27 to the Nintendo Switch. It's $20 and will include two released DLC packs. I've heard it's a really good local co-op game.

Pyre is the first game I think I've ever pre-ordered digitally. 10% off one of my most anticipated.... Fantasy supernatural sports rpg adventure game that looks lush. Had my eye on this for a long time.... Done!

Well, Rugby League is the junky version of rugby. Rugby Union is the good one.

Those who need to will understand that.

Unfortunately there's a major shortage of Rugby games so I may need to take a look at this one.

After watching a Let's Play of the beta from 3 weeks ago and reading the RPS review, I've decided to pass on Aven Colony. It certainly doesn't seem like a bad game, but there are enough negative aspects to dissuade me from pulling the trigger.

That's a shame. Removed from my wishlist.

Might want to wait until the inevitable patch - the LP series career mode I've been watching has seen the player get season ending injuries three years in a row. I suspect it's because the player's stats start so far below the AI player stats that they have a higher chance, but still it looks a bit off - as does the base stats (stamina etc) progression.
