Fortnite

Apologies if I was unclear due to my being absolutely ignorant. The Fortnite alpha is ended, servers are down, and won't be back up until the 20th of July when the early Early Access starts for those who bought founders packs.

Minor correction: the game will only be available on the 20th for Alpha players who also bought a founders pack. Non-alpha players who buy a founders pack will be able to play on the 21st.

Why isn't there more marketing/hype about this? It's EPIC not some indie or startup.

Thank you for the correction. And then those who don't pre-order but buy a Founders Pack will be able to get in on 7/25. Not sure when that pre-order window ends, but I would assume it's some time on 7/20.

They're working on it now, having reached out to lots of YouTubers. I'm not sure why they're not hyping it more, though, because it's very mature and fun for what I would consider "early access" (or even alpha).

This game has been in development since 2011 and I literally heard about it for the first time yesterday.

It was a cover story on an issue of Game Informer around four or five years ago in issue 253 in 2014 but it's been flying under the radar since. Darren Sugg and Zak Phelps presented about Fortnite at E3 2017. I think most of its popularity has been word-of-mouth, though.

Is anyone jumping in on this early with the pre-order editions? I was contemplating picking up the Limited Edition package which comes with two standard edition keys. I'd be willing to pass those on to some interested GWJ'ers for a discount at $30 each. Any takers?

I have the Deluxe Package (that I'll probably end up upgrading so I have additional keys to share) and I know a few others have bought into it or are planning to. I pasted a link to this message in the GWJ Slack where I won't shut up about the game.

I am going to pre-order the base package with the express intent of upgrading it to the Super Deluxe (for the free copy and other goodies) once I confirm that the game is as fun as it looks and works on console.

this game gives me an Orcs Must Die vibe from watching the videos, for anyone that's played, is that accurate?

Ha! I asked that earlier in Slack as well. I think that our evangelist Muraii said that something she had read said that they're similar in building defenses and trying to route the enemy, but that pathing and how the enemy responds is different.
Plus you have to actually go out and collect the materials, and there's some sort of semi permanent base that you can build on.
So I'm getting a "similar, but different enough that I'm willing to try" vibe.
And hey, if you don't like Fortnite, Orcs Must Die Unchained is free.

ok, i caved and bought it, see you all in there.

This is accurate.

I was going to jump on this one, but my poor laptop's cpu is just a little too weak to pull it off. The integrated graphics are more than enough.

Have fun peeps!

Just bought the base Founder's pack on XB1. Hope that there are some (any?) GWJers on that platform.

The rest of you getting PC or console? If I get it, it's PC only since I don't own a console.

I'm going to get on PC.

I would get PC, but this is something that I certainly want to play with the kids and Mrs. Abu. We have 2 XB1s at my house, and the kids have one at theirs, so it's a no-brainer. Most likely I will end up playing on PC as well (should I enjoy the game as much as I hope to) but wait until it's F2P next year on that platform.

PC for me

I'm on PC but probably will end up trying on PS4, too. As it is, unfortunately, there is no cross-platform play and cross-platform progress is only supported on PC/Mac and PS4.

Q: If I’m on Xbox One, can I play with my PS4 friends, or the other way around? What about PC?
Cross-platform play is not supported by Fortnite at this time.
What about my in-game progression?

A: Cross-progression is supported on PC/Mac and PS4 only. Players must link their PSN account to their Epic ID in order to enable cross-progression. Link your accounts here.
Xbox One does not support cross-progression.

Yeah, I saw that. It's unfortunate, sure, but having another place to run alts isn't all bad.

Looks like the newest version of the launcher, 5.0.1, is out. You still can't download the game (or patch, for those of us with an existing install (I assume it'll go like that (Inception horn))) yet as of this writing. Look I make a fancy words.

This means, if you have a key (either was an alpha player or pre-ordered) you can get the launcher and start building out your friend list. I'm "muraii" and also not crazy probably.

My Epic (games) name is same as my forum name: Taharka

Installing the patch. It's only 262MB for alpha players updating. About 6.8GB for new installs.

We were sent a key for the game, so I'll be giving it a shot! "Certis" on the Epic Games ... thing. Another platform ... *sigh*

Sweet.

I didn't really know anything about this game other than the fact that it was made by Epic and had some Minecraft elements, but after watching some of the gameplay videos posted on the last page, I think it looks pretty damn good. I might jump in for early access next week.

Sweet! Plus given the NDA lifts Friday, you'll be able to see current content live streaming.

sortimat on the epic games thing

For those who want to, is there a preferred voice app? There is the "official" Fortnite Discord server, a GWJ Discord server, and a GWJ Twitch/Curse server, at least.
