Indie Games You Can Play Right Now

I Bit, I'll trying it out tonight, after the Sens beat the Rangers.

Definitely. When I finish it. Which will be sometime after I start it...

Crossposting from The Week Ahead. Technically, you can't play it "right now", but it releases in 3 days.

It took me a total of just over two hours, with plenty of looking around. It's not a long game!

OMG you guys, so I discovered this game called LOGistICAL via a friend on Steam. It's basically a logistical strategy puzzle game. Each town is its own puzzle, and each town has needs and industries. You use trucks to complete each town so that they can put out their industry more efficiently, thereby feeding other towns that need the goods supplied by those industries. It takes place in Australia, and I just lost about an hour and a half to it without even realizing it. It's amazing so far, and I want to solve all the towns.

It was mentioned some weeks back in the Upcoming Indie thread, but I just got a chance to give Unexplored as spin after sampling Austin Walker's epic 2+ hour YouTube run. I basically insta-bought it after viewing 15-20 minutes of gameplay.

Game is good. Like really, really good.

It feels like 2017's Spelunky.

Unexplored has some amazing procedural generation tech working under the hood.

I think I love the marketing for Strafe more than I do the actual game

+1

That video is excellent.

Yeah, this is what I've discovered as well.

As a general rule, I'm not a fan of procedural generation. It typically feels like one long hallway with boxes (rooms) randomly attached on either side.

But there's something special going on here. If you had told me the maps were manually designed I wouldn't bat an eyelash. I think it also helps that the entire dungeon is created from the start, so you'll read notes specifically referencing content in deeper levels, as well as equipment to deal with puzzles further down the line. It lends a sense of purposeful design to the entire experience .

I found a short dev video on YT giving a brief explanation of this unique approach to randomization.

Anyway, I'm absolutely loving this game so far. Movement and tactical, timing-based combat feels dialed in and tight. Audio/visual design is top notch. No XP* so there's a great sense of risk/reward with every enemy encounter.

* You do keep Gold currency between dungeon runs. As well as unlocking new starting classes and pre-dungeon shop items through and Achievement-like system.

It's all pretty sweet, to the point where Unexplored is likely earmarked for a spot on my GOTY list.

So hey friends, anyone own We Need to Go Deeper?

We're gonna stream it this evening and could use a couple more crewmates. PM me if you're interested. Thanks!

Played through GNOG and Edith Finch this weekend. Both, in their own way could be described as gussied up pop-up books if you wanted to be grossly reductive, but I enjoyed the heck out of them.

I'm fixin' to do a spoiler section on it, so stay tuned. It will have surprise guests, so if you have questions about the game you''d like me to ask, feel free to PM me.

So, I bought Killers & Thieves, by one of the Banner Saga people, in which you manage the activities of a "medieval thieves' guild."

This is the kind of game I've always wanted.

But this was not the game I wanted.

yay!

Hover : Revolt Of Gamers just came out of Early Access recently, if you need something to get your fix like Jet Set Radio Future, with multiplayer, 1st or 3rd person view and other assorted things.

Nex Machina releases today on Steam and PS4. Nex Machina is a twin-stick shooter heavily inspired by Robotron and Smash TV. Supports co-op play.

Has anyone been able to get into Beholder? I tried it out last night and while the atmosphere of it did a nice job, the actual game play was pretty weak for me. Unless it opens up later in the game, I found myself just trying to observe people I suspected of wrongdoing be either installing cameras in their apartment or peeking through the keyhole, searching their apartment when they left, and having conversations when I needed some info.

While the atmosphere is good, I didn't find that it captured the oppressiveness of the situation as well as Papers Please. Also while the game play in Papers Please was also basic, I found Papers Please to feel more "like a game" and enjoyed trying to examine the peoples' papers for pertinent information. I just found the observation mechanic in Beholder pretty boring.

Ohhhh man, did I play a LOT of Smash TV, at the pay-by-the-hour arcade. I couldn't imagine dropping quarters into that hoover.

Also Dragon's Lair... pretty, but death was waiting at every missed blinky-platform.

Yeah, both Nex Machina and Serious Sam's Bogus Detour (which also dropped today) look like they'll seriously scratch my twin-stick shooter itch. Gah.

Dang it, how did your post remind me that Dragon's Lair 3D existed? I need to find my install discs and see if it holds up.

Though, I just saw a reminder that another game existed, and it is an indie game, so I can post it here....
Has anyone played Wuppo yet? I remember seeing it some time ago, and the fact it has over 300 reviews and zero of them negative makes me, unusually curious target for the steam sale.

Cute looking metroidmania that looks like yoshi island, but with paper mario humor? At least that is what one or two reviews I've seen have said about it. Mouse and Keyboard only though.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/40...

The only thing I know about Wuppo is that it showed up in the hidden gems on steam article, as the current, rapidly-rising, top game on all of steam. So, you know, it might be unexpectedly good. Do report back.

Speaking of the hidden gems article, I've played some of the games on that list and haven't seen them mentioned in a while. And one of the reasons I started this thread was so that I'd have a place to talk about games that have been out of forever but that you probably haven't played. So that seems like a good starting point...

The Blackwell series are some really excellent point-and-click adventure games.

Immortal Defense is a tower defense game, but that's selling it short. It's got an emotional story that intertwines with the really neat take on the mechanics. And barely anyone has heard of it.

Jamestown is a co-op ton-down shmup with a really great soundtrack. Also I met the lead developer once, and he was pretty great too.

Year Walk, another adventure game, but not point-and-click. More sliding-interface-interaction? Anyway, great, spooky atmosphere and well worth playing. Draws on Swedish folklore.

868-Hack is a roguelike puzzle game that takes place on a 6x6 grid. Really clever design, you'll enjoy it if you're the kind of person who likes figuring out how to optimize the best use of the tools you've been given.

The developer has a bunch of roguelike games on mobile as well.

Imbroglio?

Annoyingly he only seems to release stuff on iOS. Got both on iPod, but be cool to have on phone/tab.

This looks awfully cool:

That seems pretty amazing for a Wizard Jam game.

Yeah, that's Michael Brough

Also, 868-Hack is getting an expansion next month

Kingsway from Adult Swim Games launched today on Steam for $9.99.

Looks like an RPG rogue-lite controlled through a mock-90's OS.

REALLY curious on the reception as it looks fresh as heck.

Oh god, I might need this.

Yeah, I'm dangerously close to buying this sight unseen.

Yes! Like progress quest but with gameplay added back in. I can't listen to the audio, is it pronounced "Kings Way" or "King Sway?"
