Cyberpunk Catch-All

Oh, cool! I'd seen the Ars Technica one (which was great, even if it was framed as if Pondsmith was the inventor of the cyberpunk genre rather than the creator of Cyberpunk the RPG), but hadn't known about the others.

Cool thing about Pondsmith is that he has always shouts out to Gibson.

NoClip also had an interview with a CD Projekt Red guy.

These guys are getting away with murder. How long has this game been in development with nothing to show?

About 0.36 Duke Nukem Forevers

Assuming they started development around the time the trailer was released in 2013, about 4 years. That isn't unreasonable for a title on the scale of something like Witcher 3 (started development in 2011, released 2015). Sometimes mystery is the best marketing.

Yeah, a European Con makes sense. Pondsmith suddenly appearing out of the shadows suggests the start of the hype cycle.

I'm going to do a first for me, I'm calling a release for a year from now.

The only thing I want them to show me is the finished product when it's done.

Yes, and they can have as much time as they need!

Which is when they said they would release it... hardly getting away with anything.

If they can pull off making a cyberpunk game with the same depth as the Witcher 3 I may never have to buy another game.

^Perhaps... though I won't complain if they do four or five (or fifty) meaty DLC expansions this time.
I'll keep buying 'em!

Agreed. It's not like they're using crowdfunded money from fans to feed a continuous cycle of feature-creep and missed milestones for years on end with no specified release date... unlike some games I could mention.

After three content heavy witcher games heavily based on books it will be interesting to see who they get to write the story.

Probably the writing team who wrote the Witcher games. It's not like they just copy/pasted the books.

Sure. But the mined the books dry for content. Even the Blood and Wine dlc takes its main theme from The last wish. I'm interested to see how they get on creating new stories and chatecters. I have high hopes.

There's a TON of material to mine from. CP2013 + Sourcebooks, CP2020+Sourcebooks+published adventures+Firestorm stuff+V3 stuff, Gibson, Dick, etc. Holy crap I had forgotten how much there was. Plus you've got Pondsmith actually being helpful with material from the upcoming PNP game covering the intervening years up to the 2077 game. They'll have as much if not more material to work with as Witcher.

Cyberpunk 2077 Will be Single-Player, No Hidden Catches - 'We Leave Greed To Others'

Last week an interview with CD Projekt RED’s studio president Adam Kicinski appeared to suggest Cyberpunk 2077 could be going the multiplayer or games as a service route, although it appears something may have been lost in translation. Now the official Twitter account has stepped in confirmed Cyberpunk 2077 will be a single-player, story-driven RPG with no hidden catches.

For fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the good news is that CD Projekt RED plans to deliver nothing less with the follow-up. It’ll be same open-world RPG at its core with a huge, expansive storyline to get lost in. They also found time for what presume is the slyest of digs at EA and its handling of Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Need For Speed Payback’s microtransactions, although it could also apply to Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Forza 7, Call of Duty WWII, or just about any AAA game launching this holiday season.

“Worry not,” proclaims CD Projekt RED. “When thinking CP2077, think nothing less than TW3 — huge single player, open world, story-driven RPG. No hidden catch, you get what you pay for — no bullsh*t, just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt. We leave greed to others.”

Fret not then, Cyberpunk 2077 sounds like it’s going to be everything we’d been hoping it would be. These comments should assuage plenty of fears that CDPR was dipping its toes into uncharted and controversial territories.

From the sound of things, development of Cyberpunk 2077 is progressing well, despite rumours to the contrary. Despite this, it's looking likely we're still a good chunk of years from the game actually releasing. If I were a betting man, I suspect CDPR may even be holding on for the next console generation. It's been five years since its announcement, what's another couple?

*emphasis mine.

I expect an E3 presentation next year and a mid-to-late 2019 release date.

Wonder if they've scrapped the multiplayer bit due to the EA fiasco or due to tech. Their last round of interviews said they were working on different options for multiplayer.

Oops, wrong thread!

Could be a situation like BioShock: Infinite where they prototyped various multiplayer modes before jettisoning the idea entirely.

I think we'll be lucky to even get that.

I'm fine with them holding out for new console tech. Make it sexy, make it smart, make it pretty. Spare no expense. Just don't bother making a downgraded version for old consoles. Go all in on next gen.

*Stands on soap box*
*Clears throat*

f*ck consoles!

*steps off soap box*
*smiles mischievously*

Must be great being wealthy enough to always afford a new console. What's wrong with current consoles? What was so lacking in TW3 that the next game needs new hardware?

Who said I was wealthy?
If the timing were to work out for Cyberpunk to land in 2017 or 18 with some certainty then I'd be pretty pleased with that. But new consoles will likely be in the conversation by the time this thing is ready to come out of the oven. If it's next gen launch window ish then I don't want CDPR to compromise their vision by trying to support 6+ year old console tech. Examples fresh in memory are Destiny and Shadow of Mordor. They both came out within a year of X1/PS4 debut and both were cross gen with differing degrees of compromise.

I agree that if they're just going to reskin Geralt of Rivia into Geralt of Cybertown then it's a bit of a stretch to have them abandon current gen. But I fully expect them to push the envelope for their next major game in terms of visual splendour, content amount and complexity and underlying systems like AI programming.

Do you really think so? I'm not a console player but it feels to me as though the next 'generation' is a looooong way off. I think we're much more likely to get small incremental iterations - certainly not worth CDPR waiting for some grand increase in tech. And, if they are waiting 3 or 4 years more then I fear even Witcher 3 money isn't going to keep them alive. Witcher 3 came out in 2015, if Cyberpunk comes out in 2020 that's 5 years.... a hell of a long time for a studio to survive without a big release. I would be surprised if it doesn't release in 2019.

I think so but I'm not clear on what next gen will looks like. Will it be PS4 Pro Ph.D Edition with full backwards compatibility or a real generational leap, leave all your old games behind kind of transition?

TW3 landed in 2015 which was just about perfect. They've already been targeting PS4/X1 since TW2 which came out in 2011 which was also when last gen machines were well past their prime.

Personally I think 4 years is minimum for a top shelf AAA RPG. The content creation requirements alone are tremendous.

TW3, GOG and Gwent money (ok probably mostly GOG) is keeping the engine running. They can afford to give their next big game some extra TLC.

I forgot about gog to be honest, but I wonder how separate the two parts of the business are.

Just watched the trailer from 2013 again. 14 people dead from random violence? Seems so quaint these days. Now I am sad.
