Now Recruiting! Be a Part of the Extra Life 2017 Team for Charity!

I figured out the streaming stuff to a degree (see the streaming thread!), so I could participate this year since it's in November.

And this is why the change in leadership is going to fail.

I don't know if I'll be doing extra life this year, depends on how settled in to our new place we are by then. It's on my 'want to do' list but, you know, things happen.

So given the tepid feedback re: a Hangout, I think it probably makes sense to not try to force something that isn't going to go as far as getting everybody onto something synchronous to chat. A bunch of us are already hanging out in #extralife on the GWJ Slack; if you're interested, you are totally welcome to come chill out there and talk cross-stream stuff, ideas for day-of, all of that. Among other things, I'm a fake A/V wizard (gamerparent's a real one) but I've spent enough time in the guts of Twitch/OBS/cameras/audio to be up on a few things, and I'm happy to help anybody looking to put on something fun.

I'm old and have no idea how to stream so I'm of no use there. I do however know how to raise money for a good cause (or at least I'm passionate about it) so I'll do whatever I can.

Just an update on my end, the rest of the Magic Hour Show hosts and other gamer parents wanted me to make a team, so I have my own team and won't be officially a member of the GWJ team for fundraising purposes. But I'm happy to be part of what we are doing here, lending some technical support if needed, and streaming on and around the day of the event.

Because our team is tired parents, we might do something like: Stream each night for a couple hours during the week leading up to the event, and then just do daytime on Saturday, or as members are able, and have our team hours add up to 24.

@Sydhart you rock! There's no requirement to stream, you can do it anyway you want. Part of the beauty of this is that it's really flexible.

I'm back to more regular streaming on Twitch, and I'm also posted up in the #extralife slack channel, and twitch chat channel depending on where y'all are at.

OK, I'll get involved in the Slack chat soon, I'm happy to try help as much as I can, plus I've been streaming a lot more lately. I'm still going to try and go for the full 24 hours, although I'm sure my internet provider throttles my connection if my upload speed is high for too long, so maybe I will split it into two sections.

SO... I'd like to start streaming, but have no idea how to actually get "geared up" to do it. Any experts out there that could help point me in the right direction?

Are you wanting to stream yourself playing games on a console, or games on a PC?

PC - sorry, should have mentioned that!

Very easy then UMO - download a program called OBS. I am a super newb and that program is incredibly easy to get started!!

OBS link...

I assume you have a Twitch account. There's a key code you'll provide to OBS software to allow it to stream video to your Twitch.

I use a very simple Tascam USB audio interface for audio. I think these are about $149. I'm guessing you could just plug a computer mic into the port as well.

Also a webcam if you want your ugly mug on the stream as well.

Are there any common assets available for streaming? Like a gif with transparent background that cycles between the GWJ and extra life logo?

Amoebic made some stuff last year, I think. I've been working on a set of interactive overlays but TBH I might end up putting them on the back burner as I've got some specific ones I'm going to need for the day-of show.

Ah, yes! Sorry. I'm not able to right at the moment, but I will look into what I have for GWJ/EL overlays and widgets, and throw it in a drop box for all.

I've been chatting with Elysia about getting some of the vectors for the GWJ logos, and meaning to put together a few basic overlays for non-EL stuff, as well, but that's another spinning plate for another day.

Thanks to both of you for your efforts!

I got the images from doogiemac a while ago, I can get you them.

Hi All! I have some EL/GWJ overlay templates for you!

Sorry for the delay. I've attached a dropbox link some contents inside for streaming overlays that are compatible with OBS (and probably nvidia, haven't played with that much yet, though).

Within the main folder link, there is a subfolder and some files:

Subfolder "EL Elements" - This is a collection of files I pulled from the extra life archives. You can find them yourself on the extra life site, but I also have them here. If you have Photoshop or some other image editing program that's compatible if you prefer to build your own overlays yourself, these elements can be pulled into layers to create your own custom overlay with the recognisable Extra Life aesthetics.

EL_GWJ Overlays1-8.png - These are existing overlays with transparencies in *.PNG format I made with a variety of arrangements. Some have space left in various areas should you wish to use things like donation tickers, social media banners, animated icons, or other small overlay widgets. When I charity stream, I like to position my player camera window around the controller wings because I'm extra like that. Please feel free to do the same if you're so inclined. I also included a clipped version of all the winged ones I did if you prefer a more clean and simple look.

GWJoverlay.psd - This is a photoshop file with labelled layers that were all used to create the above 8 overlays, which anyone is welcome to use and adapt to personalise their own unique overlay.

The wonderful Ed Ropple and Elysia will be hooking me up with some GWJ-only themed assets in a little while, so I will put together a few overlays and post those in the Streamers With Jobs thread. I know a there's some crossover here with EL and other streamers in the community, so keep a lookout for that in the future as well.

Hello folks! I was chatting about Extra Life with some friends today, starting to think about what we might like to do for our involvement. Is this still the best place to talk about coordination among the GWJ community for the event on November 4, 2017?

I was wondering the same think. Haven't seen much going for it on the Forums this year. If anyone happens to be in the Central PA Area, I am running a Table Top event for Extra Life on Nov. 4th. If you want the details let me know.

Or if you are interested in supporting Extra Life, might i encourage you to throw that bone to Penn State Children's Hospital through my support page.

I am going to be without wife or other commitments, so I could do something. But my machine is really slow and not performing. It might handle casting and a web game or something. I could cast a programming game I play, or Kingdom of Loathing. Or maybe dungeon crawl webtiles.

I am 100% doing a 24 hour stream this year. I’m in Italy so the time difference actually helps cover the whole time with alert humans.

I’d love to coordinate more with other GWJ folks. Unfortunately I’m doing field training and won’t be home until 31OCT. Cutting it close.

I’ll put up a google doc schedule once I get back. Until then, pm me if you’re interested in streaming.

I'm doing my on-site stream this year; I was hoping to coordinate more with GWJ folks but I had to roll out a schedule pretty early. If somebody pops up in #extralife on Slack (protip: be on Slack!) during some dead time we might be able to bring 1-4 people into an online game, but it'll have to be an audible we'll call as we go. Our setup is pretty awesome--we should, should, be flipping from one player's perspective to another if I've gotten everything in line. It's gonna be a neat show.

I know some GWJ people will be in the house and maybe in front of my cameras at some point or another, as the CIC here in Boston is running an open event for people (and if you're local, you should come!) and we'll be playing games around some interviews with local devs and fancy games folks.

I'm thinking of participating this year. I'm gonna catch up and reading the four pages of thread, but this is something I'm seriously considering as I won't have the kids, and I didn't think I'd risk going to the Paris Games Week on the weekend anyway (too crowded).
Sooo, room for an extra goodjer?

I've signed up and joined Slack. A little extra info, I'm in France currently, so GMT+1 (that's six hours ahead of Eastern, typically, although we'll be switching from daylight saving time on October 29th and US is only switching the following weekend, so it'll only be 5 hours on November 4th).
No webcam though, I never use one. I do get a few people in my channel when I stream, mostly goodjers, but sometimes random people who brought there because they're curious about the game I'm playing. I'm drawing up a lit of potential games I could map out, so I don't play the same thing for 6 hours straight, and to help keep things more varied. I will be taking small breaks to sleep, eat and all that logistical crap, because I'm not exactly superhuman. Anyhow, that's what I'm thinking. I don't know if that factors in or whatever, I know I'm kinda doing this last minute, but here I am anyhow.

I updated my own page. I cannot stream this year but decided I'd use the time to try and spend 24 hours recording footage for my YouTube channel. Destiny 2 set me behind a bit so I figured why not just use the day as an excuse to catch up. Don't know if it'll work and I foresee having the lowest amount of cash in the years I've been running Extra Life, but it's better than nothing.

Well, I've decided I'm in like Flynn. I'll be setting up a schedule, streaming as much as possible, as long as possible, and using my little social media network to try and get some funds for the hospital I picked (I went with the one in DC, my old stomping grounds). So now I'm thinking of drawing up a schedule, I'll be trying to play games for one, two or three hour chunks, I'm not sure yet. I have no idea how this is done, I'm just improvising. Going to try and go with games from my Backlog which are popular and/or intriguing. Here's my list of potentials:

  • Perception (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Ladykiller in a Bind (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Batman - The Telltale Series (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Remember Me (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • DOOM 3: BFG Edition (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Bayonetta (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • SUPERHOT (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Might throw Mass Effect: Andromeda in the mix since I'm still playing it.

I was thinking of letting big donors pick a game from my library I could play. Other than that... I've been take a page from Extra Life's book, so to speak. Basic stuff like getting hydrated, stretching and stuff.

Serious question: I'm not big on webcams, but should I use one for Extra Life?

Thoughts? Opinions? Criticisms? I can take it!

I've never used a webcam for Extra Life, so I'd say it isn't necessary. Then again, I don't tend to get a lot of people viewing, so...

Honestly, I’m more concerned about the increase in unwanted attention I’d get with a webcam. My viewership is small, for sure, but I’m not sure I’m prepared to risk gaining more trolls.

I'm still hoping to do the full 24 hours, but it depends on schedule, if not I'll split it up between two days, but I'm still up for doing it. I've got a few games ready to play, PUBG with gwj'ers will be the main one though!
