Now Recruiting! Be a Part of the Extra Life 2017 Team for Charity!

I encourage it! Such sorts of gatherings are a great way to raise money as well as spreading awareness.

Created an #extralife channel on the GWJ Slack. Interested folks should 100% chill out over there. Not least because I have piercing organizationally-related questions (the best kind?) for you.

Any recommendations on a mediocre headset for streaming?

I think my rig could maybe handle a roguelike and stream at the same time.

In decreasing order of recommendation: Sennheiser PC350, Logitech G930, whatever is fifty bucks at Best Buy.

But I'd recommend regular headphones and a decent USB dynamic microphone more, like a Samson C01u.

So I keep meaning to jump in here and I keep not jumping in here and I'm sorry for being a terrible leader.

My ability to Stream is in flux because of my living situation. I will not be able to do a regular thing. However, I'd certainly love to see if we could have everyone get on Curse's Extra Life channel one night to have a discussion on ideas and thoughts so we can figure out potential team game nights. For example, someone here has to have Mass Effect Andromeda, and a stream of the GWJ community playing that sounds like a great idea.

A Rocket League event with 6-8 people in Curse would also be amazing.

Great idea. This coming week is pretty flexible for me. There's a chance I'm out of town Thursday night, but otherwise I should be able to make something work!

Friday through Monday I'll be away and Wednesday and Thursday are podcast nights for me. So unless folks are good with organizing something last minute this week might be a bust.

How about next Saturday, April 15? Also, I didn't see an Extra Life channel in the Games with Jobs community. Did I miss it under one of the categories?

Maybe I should have specified that I'll be away the 14th through 17th.

I could have sworn Curse had an Extra Life channel we set up for last year. Unless I'm thinking of Discord?

Oh, you did say that I guess I didn't read it

Shall we try to plan something for the week of April 17th? That's far enough ahead that I should be able to make just about any night work. Saturday, April 22, I'll be out during the day, though.

The only multiplayer game I play is Overwatch, so I'll probably pass on that meeting.

I should have something around the tooling I've been working on pretty soon.

Well, it's more or less a meeting in general. Multiplayer stuff will be discussed, but not exclusively.

So now I'm thinking that I'd like to stream a session of competitive coding on codingame.com. Basically it would look like this, only with one person and my American mid-east accent. I might take language or puzzle requests from the audience.

Yeah, it's time I do more to get involved with this stuff...

What's the thinking on steaming table top gaming, like the roll20 shows for D&D and Blades in the Dark? Logistics might be a little crazy, since I'd need a few players along for the ride but it's one of those things I've always wanted to do.

When I recruit for Extra Life that's some of the stuff I throw out there. I ask if folks play D&D and note they could do a 24-hour game session (though poor GM of that game). It's all up for grabs, really.

It's totally doable, but to get production values that make somebody want to watch it, in-person seems to be better? But maybe not feasible. Everybody needs face-time on the camera, though, which can get cluttered in a skypecast setup (and presumes you have a way to composite everyone into the scene).

When I talked to Julian at PAX, he expressed interest in running a two-hour session of some flavor on Game Day as part of the big dumb thing I'm throwing.

The Roll20 streams of Adam Koebel's games seem to do just fine. They composite webcams over top of the map and dice-rolling apps. I enjoyed several of them.

I wouldn't want to DM D&D for 24 hours either (or even 24 minutes, *blech*), but some Apocalypse World or Fate game might work better.

Yeah, I figure if it's worth doing, It's my job to raise the production values. I'd want to go all in on the video streams, on-screen maps, etc. I'm going to be experimenting with recording my upcoming sessions, so maybe I can test out some of these ideas at the same time.

I agree, a full 24 hour stream is impossible, but maybe a mini-campaign split up with a few hours on and a few off over the course of a day might work. It would be a lot like one of the online game cons. I'd want to play something more story-driven or rules light anyway.

Anyway, I'll register for the group and start on some ideas.

I am kind of building an overlay framework over here. Might be useful to you.

Bought an almost new used C01U (Not Pro) off Amazon. Really excited to try it out. I might even take the black tape off my webcam!

I took it down after the last year's event, there's a persistent clutter issue with our channels

So the silence in here is very much my fault for a number of reasons, and some of those reasons have led me to the tough decision to step away from my role of leading the GWJ Extra Life team. I'll do what I can for the team page this year as it remains, but there's a multitude of reasons that I'm unfit for such a task.

The most obvious one right now is that I have no clue if I can even do Extra Life this year. I've moved back in with my family and don't really have a suitable office/work space from which I can stream in silent privacy. Not only does this make scheduling events like I had wanted throughout the year difficult, it means I might not be able to manage 24 hours of gaming. I'd like to see if I can come up with something as I absolutely love doing Extra Life every year, but I might have to skip out.

I've also chosen to re-evaluate the many ambitions and projects I have and take a more realistic approach. I have a really bad habit of stretching myself too thin on trying to work on too many projects at once, which means I may spend five minutes of my day thinking about something for, say, GWJ Extra Life, but then quickly get sidetracked by two other projects I'm trying to get done. This means I am unable to give the group effort the focus it deserves.

Finally, and it's something I've been fighting with myself for quite a long time, I just do not have a leader's charisma. I'm not the sort of voice or personality people enjoy rallying behind. I don't know how to reach out confidently, I'm always afraid of being annoying, I'm never certain of the ideas I have, I always want to keep options open-ended rather than seem demanding, and even when it seems like I'm doing everything right, it never seems to actually go right for me.

I would wish that someone is capable of taking charge of this effort and turn it into the big, wonderful communal thing I always wanted it to be. For me, I'll be contributing to Extra Life's local efforts in the Philly area still by handling recruitment, but that might be the extent I can contribute at all.

I'll still keep an eye on the thread, though, and try to take part in whatever I can. Even if you guys all play individually, I'll contribute, donate, and help out in some fashion.

That's sad to hear, ccesarano, but may I say what a fantastic job you have done.

I'm almost definitely still up for doing it, I'm sure if others are involved then at the least we can come together to keep pushing it on.

Very sorry to hear ccesarano, life has a tendency to throw us curve balls that we do our best to catch. I'm determined to take part in this endeavour and will be recruiting from the main Streamer thread to make this happen.

I've never streamed before, but I'd like to get involved this year. Obviously, I'm not a good candidate to lead up this endeavour, but I'm here to help for whoever does pick up the reigns.

CCesarano - thanks for all you do for the community already!

Alright, so if CC's out, somebody will need to step up to run this thing. I have a trainwreck of my own to deal with for Game Day, as mentioned before (Boston area GWJ folks, you should get in touch with me and help make this thing awesome!), but I'll herd cats in absence of other options. If somebody else wants to throw their hat in the ring to head this up, you're more than welcome to.

Regardless of who's running this (and we can talk about it then), we should probably have a catch-up session sometime soon, probably this or next week, to coordinate what we're doing, whether we're looking to do some run-up stuff (I'll probably be running SMT3 at some point in late summer), that sort of thing.

Let's figure out a time to do a Google Hangout (I think video and a screenshare has pluses over a chat room for this sort of planning) and discuss Extra Life. Pick times you're available here: https://beta.doodle.com/poll/qss6t7z...

We also have a Slack channel, #extralife, and an Extra Life channel on Twitch, that are pretty quiet most of the time. If you're interested in Extra Life, maybekindof you should hang out there.

So uh

/looks around

Turnout a little light up here, huh?

Heavy is the head that bears the crown.

Or maybe "it's lonely at the top"?

If you're not going to be helpful, could you please not? Thanks.
