GWJ Community Voice Comms

Cathadan, is there any word on when they will cancel Curse accounts?

I don't think there's a firm timeline for when the desktop app makes Twitch accounts 100% mandatory, but that requirement has already begun to roll out to a small percentage of desktop users with un-merged curse accounts. Feel free to PM me if you have problems with the account merge process.

Hehe... if my previous post in this thread hadn't made it obvious... I have a "problem" with account merge, period.

Oh, and let's not mention that in 2017, you have to come up with a unique username. Why in 10 holly burning hells do I need a unique user name in 2017? Why can't I just log in with the same email you're forcing me to create, and have me pick a screen name I want?

Because the alternative is friend codes, which I'm sure will make you even happier.

Thanks! Hope you all like the desktop pop-out player as much as I do.

Just tried to fire up the Ventrilo and ended up finding this thread instead. Tried my old installation of Curse. It failed to open. Removed it. Installed the newfangled Twitch thing.....using my directory structure of choice, C:\Program Files (x86)\Twitch, not some crazy /Users/ folder nonsense.

PROGRAM FREEZE at startup, after the splash video. No buttons on the program work at all. Can't sign in using Twitch. Can't sign in using Curse. Can't report a bug. Can't close the program using the X. Had to right click on my taskbar to close.

Well played, Cathadan. Now uninstalling and using the default.

...was able to log in to Twitch account, and to merge with my Curse account. But...

Still: "An unrecoverable error has occured while launching Twitch. If this error continues to occur [it does], please re-install Twitch to repair any files that may be corrupt."

Re-installed twice and it keeps giving me that error, but the program seems to work briefly (a minute or two) and then is memory dumped when that appears. So using the web browser version instead.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit, ASUS laptop, Intel Core i5-2467M, 4 GB RAM. Need anything else?

Hm, that's not great. And yeah, if the app can still launch to a stable point, send in a bug report which will automatically include details about the previously encountered errors. PM me around the same time and I can track down your individual report and we'll take over diagnosis from there. If it's stuck in a crash-on-launch situation, you can still manually zip up the log files and pass them along. (And thanks in advance if you do take the time to go through all that. Very much appreciate you helping to iron out the issue.)

Cathadan, I am sending an email request to twitch support. I just tried to log in via the web and mobile app for the first time since transitioning over from Curse about a month ago and I can't get in, but I am still logged in via the twitch desktop app. Username / email are not recognized.

EDIT: ugh. the system just automated emailed me back with the give us more information so what I just typed up got lost. It would be nice to see what I type back so I know it didn't just get deleted in the automated process. for now, I just clicked through the no email link and submitted my username for that.

Can we get a Divinity Original Sin 2 channel setup?

Any chance of getting a second Vermintide channel? It's busy now that the Vermintide 2 beta is running. Things will probably calm down in a month and we won't need it anymore, but it would be nice for now. We've been squatting in unoccupied rooms as needed, but I'd hate to think that GWJers are skipping on joining because the game looks full. Also, you should all join us and play some Vermintide 2!

i miss radiobot

I swear there used to be a browser app version of the Twitch App where you can join the GWJ channel without having to download the application itself, but i can't find it anymore. Does that still exist or was it just something I dreamed up one night?

It used to exist. It was great. They deprecated it months ago. Hey Cathadan any chance that’s coming back? Please.

It did exist and it was great! Unfortunately I can't see a world in which it does come back. It's complicated.

Friends, I make this post with a heavy heart. While no big piece of news has landed to provoke this, there's been an elephant in the room ever since Curse was acquired by Twitch. As a once Curse, now Twitch employee, it's something I was hoping would eventually resolve itself but that has ultimately proven not to be the case.

For a variety of reasons, some practical some political, the long term future of voice calls and servers within Twitch are questionable at best. At worst they might just disappear with a mere few week or two of warning, which I only say because I've seen Twitch handle things like this in a similarly clumsy way.

Somewhat tangentially, the lack of investment in voice and server features from Twitch over the past couple of years Discord continue adding features and polish to the point I feel their product clearly outshines anything Twitch has to offer. The Twitch mobile app for servers that once gave users on phones access to servers and voice rooms has been discontinued and pulled from major app stores. The web version of this desktop app that allowed users to participate without installing any software on their PC is also gone. Discord still offers both of these and in better condition than the Twitch options once were. More importantly, as Discord grew they provided APIs for developers, meaning they now have an impressive array of bots available to do all sorts of nifty things. (radiobot is not forgotten!)

With all that in mind, I feel like the best option for our community is to proactively migrate to Discord for voice comms. Even if the Twitch server runs for years to come Discord provides a better overall experience IMO, not to mention it's more fun when everybody hangs out together rather than split across platforms. I'm not going to shut down the Twitch server or force folks to switch or anything, so feel free to keep using it for as long as it lasts.

That said, I've worked with Ahrezmendi who runs the community Discord server to reorganize things a bit over there so that our regular PUBG and Overwatch groups will have a familiar home in the channel list. I've also set up Stanbot in the GWJ discord server to make an automated on-demand system for voice channels. For all the smaller gaming groups, simply go to the requests channel, send a message like "!letsplay Rocket League" and it will create a new voice channel for you. Any on-demand channels that go unused for 48 hours will get deleted in an attempt to keep the scrolling from getting crazy.

Without further ado, I hope you'll join us by clicking this invite link: https://discord.gg/TwQSjYV
Please let Ahrez or I (or any other mod there) know if there's more we can to do improve the server for you!

I enjoyed our time on Twitch and got to play some great people, so a big thanks to you, Cathadan.

Discord is a scary place for us migrating over Being able to just summon a channel though is great.

It might not be my place to say, but I wonder if it'd be possible on the CC to say that we're all in one place on Discord now, just so no one gets left behind?

I ran into a problem with the Windows Discord client last night, after rebooting my PC: the client would launch successfully, but I just got a plain grey window. I tried exterminating all running Discord.exe processes via TaskMgr, rebooting, reinstalling, and relogging via web browser, to no avail. The in-client dev tools indicated an HTTP 504 gateway timeout error. The solution I came up with was:

  • Open the dev tool window (Ctrl-Alt-I)
  • In the Network tab, click to enable the "Disable cache" setting
  • Press Ctrl-R to reload the page
  • After observing that everything loaded, un-check the "Disable cache" setting
  • Close the Dev tools window.

Hopefully nobody else needs it, but just in case.

Am I just imagining things or did Discord get rid of the sound bite that plays when you connect to a voice channel? I could swear it used to do that...

It has never done it for me. Only when I disconnect.

So...is the new Steam chat going to the new de facto standard in the near future? Looks pretty robust at first glance.

It doesn't look like it has voice rooms like Discord. Maybe if they develop it more.

Discord does so much more. Different servers, channel, voice, chat, screen sharing...

I despise the new chat UI. It's big and bloated and assumes that you're going to be in a big chat with 5+ people. If you just want to chat with 1 person the header is so small it can't even display the full name of the game they are playing.

Actually, it does have voice rooms, and chat rooms. It just isn’t obvious how to create them at first, but once you do create the first, it sort of looks just like Discord. I haven’t done any testing on quality or other aspects, and haven’t really tested out how it works for more than 3-4 users, but from what I can tell so far, other than UI differences, it seems to basically be Stealackord (that’s my combination of Steam, Slack, and Discord... I’m calling out the trademark now!)

So we can have a GWJ server where any goodjer can see all the existing channels and join them? It seemed like all I can do is create groups for my existing friend list.

Yes, and we already do have one. They're 1:1 with the old steam groups. The old group chat rooms are now fully-fledged servers. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/GWJ (or a link direct to the chat: https://s.team/chat/LhsQugW4)

Anyone else using Discord on windows 7? Starting to get really annoyed with it. Back in january one of their updates broke message notifications. Normally they appear at the bottom right corner, now all I can see is a little "wiggle" where the box pops into view just off the edge of the screen. The bug moves them just outside of your screen and the only way to see them is to have a second monitor.

Despite nearly daily updates it's been over a month and they still haven't fixed it.

Man, discord sucks. Where's my Curse Voice legacy support.
