Everspace. A roguelike space exploration and combat game.

Aha! The Tab key brings up the menus. Got it, thanks!

My personal favorites:

Fusion Blaster and Flak Cannon

Corrosion Missile and ARC-9000

This game is 40% off today. I'm tempted but it seems like interested waned off pretty fast in this thread.

I put a solid 40 hours into it and really enjoyed my time. I felt the final end-game goal was a grind and I never completed it but otherwise got a lot of enjoyment out of it.

I played it right through to the "end" end.

Enjoyed it tremendously.

Does it work well with a joystick?

Why wasn't I informed of this?!

It's okay, but it was primarily designed for mouse and keyboard.

OK, thanks. I think I'm going to keep this on my wishlist but hold off for a little while. I was looking for a reason to break out the flight stick.

It's fun in VR too.

Definitely designed for mouse/keyboard.

I tried M&K, and controller methods quite a bit. I have to agree that M&K just felt better.

I don't think joystick would feel right, with the amount of strafing, and reversing you (should) do.

Wow.

First thanks to Abu for the game. Awesome Steam Christmas gift to wake up to this morning.

Second. It will not detect my PS4 controller for anything. Not with DS4Windows like usual. Not in Steam Big Picture mode. Nothing. I just played Rocket League with it last night so there's nothing wrong with my setup. Rebooted PC. Tried all 3 controllers I own. Nada.

Ok fine, Switch controller supposedly works with PC, been meaning to try that. Plug it in. Nothing. Steam Big Picture, it works! Ok... the right stick is all wonky. Invert isn't inverting. Oh wait if I invert my mouse... huh, the right stick is being treated as a mouse instead of a stick? WTF? Can only strafe or yaw, can't roll... um...

So I just went back to mouse and keyboard after an hour of screwing around. And the game plays great. Got through a couple decent runs. Made it to jumpgate finally. Found my first crystals. Then was flying around looking for 4 more scrap so I could upgrade one of my guns for the first time. Got nailed by a 3-ship Okkar group that jumped in. Ugh.

Anyway. I really like the idea of the game. But that control fight almost made me quit. Also it makes me wonder if I do want the Switch version after all? I mean maybe on the Switch the controls will behave properly. But damn that was a fight to get to some semblance of passable controls.

It probably needs an Elite style setup for a controller to work properly. Using the triggers to do alternate stick/control pad inputs. Maybe I could get strafe/yaw/roll working better like I already do in that game? But I'm unlikely to fool with it at this point. Just want to make it through one jumpgate today and see what's out there.

Mouse and keyboard is the best way to play this, FYI.

Just got this thanks to mcirish. Looking forward to it.

So no on the Switch version?

I guess I have a week to decide to buy the DLC on Steam instead and just keep it on PC.

Not sure of the switch version. I mean it's FINE with a controller, but the devs have said their intended way to play it is M&K.

So so fun.

Turned it to easy for a bit and got to the 2nd sector a couple times. 4th sector once, so I got access to the next ship if I want to spend the credits.

Liking the 2nd layout for the interceptor, with laser beam.

Just need more time to play.

Finally made 5th sector this weekend.

Hadn't played in a couple months but suddenly got the urge. Spent a few hours on 3 runs. Found some new rare weapons for the first time and that was cool. Took down multiple elites to get keys for the first time. Expanded some inventory slots for more gadgets. Lots of new stuff, and think I'll have to play some more soon.

Wow haven't played since that last post. Everspace 2 has been announced even.

I jumped back in tonight, continuing my first sector run with gunship that I must have unlocked after that last post. No shields is weird but that thing is a tank. By sector 3 I had taken out a couple of elite fighters and felt like I was remembering how to play.

Hit an artifact jump point and was like oh yeah I remember these warden bosses being annoying. Oh yeah missiles don't work. So let me strafe and get in closer and yeah, got him! Oh sh*t black hole, now I remember... ah I'm dead. Was too slow to think of save/quit to restart the sector too. Dang it. Had multiple access keys I never got to use. But got a couple blueprints.

Unlocked some more slot perks. With gunship, adding in that front shield item is pretty awesome. Plus an energy boost to run it and turret.

So made another run. Hit one of those abandoned ships that I need key card for in 1st sector and still mad about previous run. But this time I beat the warden in sector 2 from a better distance and got my 4th artifact. Then warped into sector 3. Then I was feeling good when I ran into an enemy Corvette and decided to challenge them. Used a couple more missiles than I meant to, and my last combat drones, but I won with only 5 hull to repair, not bad.

Then another artifact in sector 4, and another win. Warped me to start of sector 5. There was a sensor array there to hack, and I found another ship to use my access card and got some sweet loot, and another new blueprint. Had to break for the night but plan to pick it up this weekend.

Looking at the old posts looks like 5 was as far as I got before. So maybe I can at least make 6 and progress the story, what little I remember of it. During the first run I had a friendly pilot show up and drop some materials. My pilot acted like he knew her but clearly can't remember. And I felt just like him at that point. Did I see her in one of the sectors before? Hah.

So I did get more story as soon as I jumped in sector 5 today. And then more when I made it to 6.

At one point an enemy corvette warped in right on top of me and I took it down anyway. Haha.

There was another jump point where they were jamming my jump. But it turned out to be a droid cruiser doing the jamming. Had to clear droids to damage it, then take it out but it kept spawning droids. Challenging but fun fight.

And finally... I made sector 7! Got some nice story chunks, now I understand what is happening in the game. And there's a fight with 6 waves of enemies. And wave 4 my sensors got destroyed, and I didn't have the right parts to repair. Wave 5, I was surrounded and tried that ARC missile... it wiped out all the fighters! But wave 6 I went down. No targeting was just too tough.

So, didn't get to complete whatever was next in the story. Hopefully it's all still there when I get back. So close!

I took some screenshots of the end screen though. 50 kills (not a record?). New sector progress record. New Credits record almost $25k (still on easy). 3 new enhancements (2 glyphs), and 10 new blueprints, including teleport (for scout) and shield Mk2. So I might either buy the scout, or switch back to the interceptor with those upgraded shields for a run. We'll see tonight.

One of the glyphs was "start on sector 2" so I could see that being useful at some point. Might need to unlock that 2nd slot for those too.

I won! (on Easy of course)

A couple more runs back in the interceptor this week. First one got to area 4 or 5 maybe. Then I made it all the way to 7 with a run here and there the last couple days. Oddly enough I saw my shipwreck in whatever area it was, but I took an ancient warp right before that so actually ended up in the jump area right beyond my ship. Doh.

But anyway, sector 7. And amazingly enough the fight stayed on the 6th wave that I was on before. So... it was still tough, but a lot easier than doing all 6 waves at once.

Cool scenes, and now there's a slightly different story hook for repeated runs. We'll see if I stick with it to finish all that. I did finally buy the scout ship so going to at least do a run or two to try that out, with cloaking device.

Since no one else is talking that might be my last post for a while. Really a fun game. And looking forward to the sequel, less rogue-like and more space pew pew.

Yeah the sequel is space loot RPG. I really really really liked Everspace but the final tasks (collecting your DNA) was too tedious for me to complete. A persistent world sounds so good given they nailed every other aspect.

I really, really do not like the way this game controls at all. It is so unsatisfying to pilot the starship, especially coming off other space-based games with actual zero-G maneuvering. This just feels like an FPS in which you are freed to move vertically at any time. I think on this aspect alone I'll avoid playing it.

Clearly you never sustained damage to your inertial dampers in-game. Come complain about the lack of zero-G maneuvering once you've had to struggle with it, cos that's usually a sign that a run is about to over right quick.

I don't want to because the game's controls are unappealing. It is not a space ship game. It is an FPS in space. I don't like FPSes.

Yeah mouse+kb was the best way to play. I still found it fun and managed to beat the story at least once. But it's definitely different. Not sure what the sequel plans.

I'm really glad I got it on PC and not Switch and that's really rare for me. But the controller controls are that bad.

The sequel is an open world RPG. I am extremely excited for it.

Is there an Everspace 2 Catch-All or will the Everspace 2 talk be here?

Maybe Strangederby can just update the title to include "1&2" and we'd be good for people trying to find the discussion?

Just checking again. Giant patch for E2 today, with improved level scaling and some new ships. I haven't really played much, still early access, but think I might hop on this weekend.
