Agents of MAYHEM (Saints Row 5? Maybe!) Catch All

Soooooooo yeah, this exists. IGN is doing coverage throughout the week, but I refuse to link there, so here's Polygon's story on it.

Open world, third person action game. The shift to specific characters versus creating your own is less awesome, but if there's some customization there, I'll probably still be happy.

I really hope Hollywood's special ability is literally a disposable stunt double. That is just the right combination of horrific and hilarious that is has to be a regular ability.

PC Gamer's take

Agents of MAYHEM (the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds). MAYHEM is a rag-tag bunch of superheroes bent on thwarting the plans of LEGION (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations).

...

Agents of MAYHEM takes place in the Saints Row universe "sharing certain story elements, symbolism, and design inspiration"

Doesn't Red Faction have some nods to SR too?

Ultor is the company that you're fighting against in Red Faction, then Saints Row, and now this third thing. The purple futuristic fleur de lis at the end makes it seem like a Saints Row Spinoff at least, if not a sequel.

I really dig the cartoony look of the smoke/particle effects in the trailer. I hope it looks like that in game.

Also Hardtack is amazing

Yeah, the Official Evil Corporation in SR2 (Ultor) is the same as the one in Red Faction. No clear links of any sort to the story, but it's just a cute little reference for the heck of it.

Agents of MAYHEM looks full of, well, Mayhem. Basically, if the Saints Row people made it and it's supposed to be crazy, I'm going to start drooling now. Saints Row was basically a mildly amusing GTA knock-off, SR2 was a ridiculous amount of fun, and Saints Row the Third is the singly most fun game I have ever played. SR4 was decent, but there's no way it could have followed up SR3 any vaguely gotten close.

See, to me, The Third and 4 shouldn't even be compared. For me, they're both brilliant games that are highly entertaining, but they're also so completely different, even while being the same franchise and having plenty of overlap in their mechanics.

I really wish there was a PS4 version of The Third so I could bounce back and forth between each on the same console.

Knowing that it's Volition and their sense of humor, consider me very interested!

And we have a trailer...

Apparently there's a character from another Volition series in the game...

Spoiler:

Pierce is in as one of your twelve characters. Codenamed Kingpin... which is perfectly NOT Pierce that I assume the nickname was self chosen.

Either way, excited for this one, sounds goofy and fun.

Trailer watched too... is that a pinup-derby lady with a mini-gun? Ohhhhhhh... right in the weird fetish zone.

Perfection. I am down with this.

Polygon has a gameplay trailer that looked pretty great except for one thing... The positioning of the player model vs. the targeting recticle was making my brain hurt. Maybe it was just a field of view thing, and correctible on PC, but it looks so weird to me. I actually went and looked up videos for SR3 to see how they lined up . It's almost like the AoM camera is angled / focus bent to show off more of the player model. Hopefully it's not as jarring to me closer to release.

That looks INSANE-ly boring.

Yeah any excitement I had after the initial announcement was all but killed after watching the video.

Yeah, I like Saints Row, but that video isn't doing anything for me. It looks outdated, at least from a gameplay perspective.

SR3 is probably my number #1 3rd person action game ever and I don't know that they could have done more to dissuade me from purchasing the game.

That looked like they kept all the pedestrian stuff from Saints Row and lost the charm.

I'm utterly confused by it. Is this a multiplayer shooter or a single-player game? Either way it's not grabbing me either...

Well, let's be real. The fundamental gameplay of The Saints Row games was never all that great. For me the over the top characters and surprisingly deft writing are what I'm here for, so I'm tentatively positive.

Another trailer:

Still not doing a great job of selling the concept.

Not to be overly negative but they may as well release it at around 30$ US because there isn't much they've shown that will get people to shell out full price.

Well, if you needed any proof that this was really Saints Row V...

Me: Whoooooo, Johnny Gat! Sold!

Video: Only at GameStop.

Me: [VERY long string of expletives deleted]

I don't do physical games anymore and I sure as hell don't do GameStop. Ugh!

According to their Twitter account, digital preorders get another Agent to be announced later. Unless it's Keith David, I think they've lost me.

Destructoid has a piece up on AoM that seems to squarely squash those hopes.

I really loved SR3 and SR4 and this seems like a gutted, scaled down version that doesn't seem to understand that 3 and 4 were greater than the sum of their parts because they had a bit of soul.

This, unfortunately, sounds really souless.

Yeah, SR3 is IMO the singly most fun game ever made. I mean, I've played better games than it undoubtedly, but that game just nailed the balance between ludicrous and serious to the point where it kept ramping things up and never got old. SR4 was so-so but still had enough to keep it going, but AoM . . . did somebody think the combat was why people liked the Saints Row games? Being able to do utterly loopy things in an open world full of weird enemies was the point of that game. Agents of Mayhem is pretty much on my "hey, I hope it's free on Games for Gold in a couple years" list at this point.

I dislike Kanye in general, but Power starting up as you jump out of the helicopter is the point where I was laughing so hard I was crying.

Feel the same. Also haven't listened to "What I Got" in years and years, but that moment in SR3 driving around is maybe my singly favorite musical moment in games history. My favorite SR3 memory was co-oping with a friend one night, and we were doing some timed mission, but I insisted on diving out of the driver's seat of the car into the street every time I saw a furry so I could beat them with a giant dildo bat because why the hell would I not? I had so much fun in co-op on that game. But, hey, with Agents of Mayhem . . .

In order to take on any missions, you'll have to select a team of three members with an ability to switch between them on the fly (so no co-op multiplayer to be found here as it's not needed).

Oh, well, good, as long as it's not "needed".

Minus the dildo bat, this is basically the same thing I did with Zenke. I would dive out of a car, set them on fire, and then hop back in.

This is a link to my VOD of the 1st 2 hours of the game. My mic was off for the 1st 30 min 'cause I'm an amateur.

Watch live video from RawkGWJ on www.twitch.tv

They talked about it quite a lot on the latest Waypoint Radio. Sounds pretty unfortunate that it starts really slowly, but gets more interesting. Sounds like a $20 steam sale game for sure.

Sad that Volition drops the ball on the game opening, because that's something they normally do very well.

Yeah, a slow opening sounds like the exact opposite of what they usually hit out of the park. The sooner I drive a tiger around the better.
