Just watched the movie last night. I liked it, wouldn't say it was great. Casting was the best part. Wonder Woman was great. The CGI was really bad at parts. The lasso was cool but relied on to much cgi or the cgi just wasn't good on some scenes. I thought ghost rider's chain was done much better in agents of shield.

I saw it last night as well, and my thoughts were very similar to yours.

About the bad CGI - In most action movies, when there's a big CGI effect that includes the characters, the speed of the action tends to stays consistent with what our brains perceive as reality, with fast cuts to add drama and to keep your eyes from ever too focusing too long on any specific detail.

What was horribly overused were the slow motion shots of WW or some character obviously superimposed over a background of explosions or some other really fake looking effect. If gives too much time for the uncanny valley to sink in, for your eyes to notice how the lighting doesn't match the foreground and the background, and for the infinite focus to destroy any sense of depth to the scene.

BvS did a lot of the same types of shots, and seeing both movies together in a relatively short time period made the bad CGI really stand out.

Watched the first episode of Supergirl tonight, but that did nothing for the hype. It's great to see lots of women talking to each other about themselves and their problems and their aspirations, but the special effects were lacking and the fight scenes had all the kineticism and oomph of a Captain Picard fistfight.

It gets better.

no... no it really doesnt...

I think Supergirl is a good show. I especially like what they did with Martian Manhunter. Didn't care much how they dealt with Jimmy. Show had some really dumb moments but no more than any other super hero show. I think the show improved greatly from where it started.

After thinking about Wonder Woman a bit more the think that doesn't make sense to me is Steve flying the plane and exploding the gas.

If the gas was flammable, why not just toss a bunch of grenades into the plane on the ground? If that would cause the gas to be dangerous on the ground....why would exploding it in the air be better? Then it just floats to some random area and kills things.

If blowing it up high in the air would mean the gas would disperse a lot becoming non-dangerous why not just shoot down the plane?

I have to conclude that the writers simply felt that someone named Steve had to fly a plane away to save the day. No matter how illogical.

Just wait until they thaw him out in a hundred years, to find out that the love of his life had moved on to work for a secret government agency.

Which movie are we talking about again?

So one of my sons and I just saw the movie. It was good, but I didnt find it to be some cinematic masterpiece. Gal Gadot was great and pulled the character off well. I'd put it above the recent DC releases, but below Nolan's Batman films. I'd put it below Guardians 2 as well. What am I missing?

You feel how you feel. Some people liked it more. No worries

I asked my wife which one she liked better. She actually saw them one after the other with some girlfriends while on business travel this week. Her words - Disney has mad skills, but you got to love a woman superhero when you're a woman.

Loved it. It was badass. More than that, it was HEROIC. She's not reluctant or tormented, driven by guilt or trauma; she's idealistic and ready to get to work—like BadKen said, everyone else is forced to keep up with her. Gal Gadot was perfect for the role (and honestly it's just nice to see Gisele back), so I guess I'm also on board for Justice League.

I actually liked the slo-mo in the village fight. I thought it was a lot more evocative of comic panels than the less subtle Watchmen (my only Zack Snyder experience)—good medium and long shots, a welcome break from the rest of the typical fast-edit shakycam. There were a few really nicely framed one-perspective shots too, like Wonder Woman's walk across no man's land and the camera following her from behind through the gala, and I'd like to watch the movie again more closely.

Every trailer I see of superhero and sci-fi movies these days is a Red Queen's race of bigger and bigger CGI destruction. I appreciated how local the final showdown in Wonder Woman is. You don't need gods or supervillains to destroy whole cities when humans can do it themselves. The choice of the WWI setting was inspired.

I hope Patty Jenkins will be directing the sequel. This wasn't the best movie of the year, but I think it's probably the best superhero movie I've seen since Tim Burton's Batman.

Spoiler:

Never trust a werewolf.

When Wonder Woman became the highest grossing movie directed by a woman, there was a lot of chatter about how Jenkins and Gadot were excited for a sequel. However, Hollywood Reporter this week reported that Warner has not yet signed Jenkins, and a sequel is not certain (Man of Steel never got a proper sequel, for example).

I hope they hurry up and get on that. However, I respect their caution and consideration when it comes to sequels. Wonder Woman isn't going away, and Jenkins might be able to work on other properties. Between Monster and Wonder Woman, she has certainly proved she has the chops.

I'm trying to come up with a witty way to say 'she apparently has the chops once every 14 years' without sounding bitter, but I just can't do it. Her IMDB is beyond frustrating.

It can't have already topped Frozen and The Matrix, can it? (I mean, it may have, with modern ticket prices being what they are, but that would surprise me.)

Both of those movies had male co-directors. They probably meant movies directed only by a woman.

Both of the Wachowskis are women.

I've been watching the latest season of Fargo, so I found David Thewlis' character a little distracting. I kept focusing on the the teeth and the mustache, and not what he was actually doing, which was too bad when it came to some of his later scenes.

Sorry, highest grossing at this point in its release (or "highest grossing opening weekend" if you prefer).

Wonder Woman (2017) made $103M in 4,165 theaters, Matrix (1999) $27M in 2,849 theaters, Frozen (2013) $67M in 3,742 theaters.

Frozen grossed $400M domestically ($1.276B worldwide). Wonder Woman is on track to at least come close to that domestic gross, but Frozen moved faster internationally. The Matrix was $171M domestically, $463M worldwide - Wonder Woman is likely to break that next weekend.

They didn't present as women at the time of their highest grossing movie, which I imagine would also be a distinction.

No Brian, turn back!

Thanks for the info, BadKen! I'm glad to hear it's doing well.

One might also argue that essentially dead naming two trans folks for the sake of making that kind of more or less meaningless distinction is a pretty insensitive thing to do.

On Wonder Woman box office: lowest percentage dropoff in overall take so far than all comic book films short of some of the Christopher Nolan Batman films. Looks set to keep on raking in the cash at least domestically

Word of mouth on this movie must be phenomenal.

less subtle? Half of that movie was near perfect recreation of the panels from the comic.

I didn't mind Thewlis so much as i did the CGI around him. The armor and his abilities and tactics were lifted from the Aries character from the game Smite. My friend and i looked at each other at the same time and rolled our eyes because of it. It's really my only complaint of the whole movie.
