That One Game You Have Never Played But Always Wanted To

Here we are twenty years later and we have no VC release, no completed translation patch, no port, and no remake.

I thought the addendum patch to translate the handful of graphics that weren't in English was released or nearly complete?

I had completely forgotten about Marvelous until this thread reminded me of the game, so I took another look for a translation patch. It looks like a complete translation patch was released in January of this year. I'll finally be able to play this game.

City of Heroes.

And I probably never will.

Were I to have more free time, I would live to play a MMORPG. I would have loved to be on the ground floor of WoW.

Dwarf Fortress for me.

Have one of the latest builds installed. Even watched an intro tutorial or two on YouTube.

Alas, I think it's just a bridge too far for my puny brain. Maybe I'll get there one day.

At least I enjoy the lite genre versions with RimWorld and Oxygen Not Included.

Back when I was younger, I had to play on an Apple ][ games like Zork and Lode Runner, Swashbuckler and the like. Which were fine.

But then my nephew got an Amiga with Defender of the Crown, and my dad switched to an Apple /// with 128kb of ram. While friends in the streets got Commodore 64's with Pirates!, Defender of the Crown and Mission Impossible.

It took me three months to gather a emulation disk for the Apple /// to act as an Apple ][. But Defender of the Crown made an impact on me... My dad switched to IBM 80886's and all. Great deal of my youth was about waiting for the PC to catch up with consoles and the commodore.

Now I am older, and my kids play Skyrim and Fable and all on the Xbox... But I've made up my mind. I will hunt eBay for a Amiga with Defender of the Crown and buy it! Just because I can!

The versions of Defender of the Crown varied greatly. The Commodore version had a lot more action in the scenes like the swashbuckling sword fighting to rescue the princess. You had to use a joystick. The PC version was pretty much walk up and whack the guard a couple of times with the right timing. The jousting was a real Female Doggo with keyboard controls. Still a great game. Plus it was my first lesson learned in successful aggressive strategy tactics.

How quickly you forget the Barrens General chat channel. That's where I actually made an effort to learn how to block channels.

I would have liked to play the Half-Life series, but the graphics seem far too dated. There was a remake in the works but it seems tengo uniform.

Don't worry - there's a sequel coming!

Bless you.

Not sure if this is a typo or an accurate representation of what it takes to really get into a MMO.

You mean Black Mesa for HL1? (Which has everything except for the ending Xen area at the moment, which, well, was mostly 3d platforming and really didn't care for that back in the day.)

And the Cinematic Mod for HL2?

KOTOR. Still on my pile of shame.

There's an Android version. Play it on the go.

I've considered. Is it any good on mobile?

With a terrible interface, unusable camera, and awful controls. Surely the best way to play.

Pretty much this. I loved KOTOR. I tried re-playing it on Xbox a few years back, and it was so clunky it was really hard to get any traction at all. And it was way better than it was on mobile.

Maybe I'll look into PC haha

Yeah there are some decent widescreen high-res mods for it, still highly playable on pc.

RDR like many, love the concept can't wait to play it and now its built up and I am afraid I won't like it so I tend to not play it.

Also in the non PS3 or PS4 boat and want to dive into Demon Souls/Bloodborne. Until that day comes I will lay in wait. (word is I have some friends that have Ps3 lying around and will lend it out but so far no one follows through)

The Zelda series, I guess. I've never experience it at all, but other GwJers reminiscences about 'Ocarina of Time' and all the recent 'Breath of the Wild' coverage has kindled my interest.

But it won't happen, of course. I can't justify a Switch given the costs, the issues its having and the lack of content. And I don't think there's any current system that I can use to play Ocarina...

Ocarina is on 3ds, wii, wii u, or if you can find a game cube they put it out for it too. Highly worth it if you can pull off playing it. I am annoyed I didn't complete my 64 collection back when games were 5 bucks on Amazon 10 years ago. Now 64 games are 30 to 40 for classics.

Much like the Old Games You've Enjoyed Without Nostalgia thread, I really can't imagine a newcomer to the Zelda series enjoying Ocarina of Time.
While I certainly enjoyed it some 20 years ago, by today's standards it's mechanically antiquated, and coming in during the birth of 3D polygon gaming is a visual mess.

Now if we're talking Link to the Past, that's a Zelda that feels timeless.

Ocarina of Time 3DS is the best version of the game as it contains a lot of quality of life improvements (most notably the Water Temple and changing the iron boots to an item you can map to the "C-buttons"). I still enjoyed it when I replayed it, but I'd honestly say Twilight Princess is "a better version" of what that game was going for with a few exceptions (for example, locking certain items to childhood or adulthood meant you made better use of your inventory in Ocarina than in Twilight).

However, every Zelda has its strengths and weaknesses. Hell, the parenthetical above is proof positive of that. There are things Skyward Sword does better than the others and things it does worse. Wind Waker would be the best of them all were it not for being too open and empty an ocean and some other issues.

Breath of the Wild is, right now, the best entry point because it's not sticking to the formula of the predecessors, and yet does open-world in such a uniquely Zelda and Nintendo fashion that there's nothing quite like it. Going into any prior game is not going to give you the same experience as Breath of the Wild, nor why it has gotten such universal praise.

FWIW I played it on iPad about a year ago and I thought it held up really well.

Yup, that one. Since I know nothing about the original and it has been "early access" for like several years I figured it would never be finished. You saying it's playable?
