Destiny 2 Catch-All

The storyline quests for the first expansion (The Dark Below?), Taken King, and (to a lesser extent) Rise of Iron are all really good. Vanilla was a jumbled, nonsensical mess. All three of those are very straightforward, well-delivered stories. The Taken King is clearly the pinnacle of the story missions.

I don't think going back to Destiny 1 is an option for me. I'd need to buy the entire game again, I believe (though it would be on PS4 this time, which will offer graphical improvements). And I'd need to be able to find players to play with. I imagine that the community is a fraction of its size in its heyday. And I'd need to find the time to play through it all, as I no longer play nightly.

This is, I think, my point about Destiny 1's legacy and its impact on Destiny 2. The people who loved Destiny 1 will be likely be up for the sequel. Those of us who didn't stick experience the DLC are likely to be much less enthusiastic. Bungie will need to knock this out of the park for me and others like me to buy in this time around. I suppose I'm thinking of an Uncharted to Uncharted 2 level of improvement (though I didn't actually play the first Uncharted as the reviews were underwhelming).

That may be true. However, I think you are in the minority that did not go back after TK expansion. The player base spiked with both new players and returning players heavily. I know of several GWJ people that left and came back once the expansion was but also have heard about it on other podcasts this podcast etc.

So i really feel there is much more people that look positively on Destiny's 1 legacy then negatively.

Honestly, I play it for the shooting and the camaraderie. Anything that has a good player base can do that for me. I reckon I'll pick up Dest2ny just to get that feeling back. The story isn't the reason to buy this game. It's there as a checked off box for the Best Buy Christmas shoppers.

I've now got a PS4, so let's say I wanted to noodle around with the first Destiny. What's the cheapest way to try it? Find a cheap copy of the Taken King release? Did that include some kind of one time code, or are used copies an option? I imagine I can't play it without having a PS+ subscription too, right?

I'll have to see if I still have a physical copy of vanilla Destiny, but honestly, borrowing it is probably your best bet if you wanna go cheap. Especially given your lack of desire to use a controller. You wouldn't have the expansion content, though.

PS+ is required to play online, yes.

But the Taken King stuff is where it got good, right?

The raids have always been good, but Taken King is where everything else got pretty much better, particularly the story stuff.

Oh, if I decide to dabble, there's a less than 0% chance that I ever try a raid.

Then yes, I wouldn't bother unless you can grab Taken King at a minimum.

Amazon is letting me pre-order this on PC, but I see no mention of it on Steam yet. Is there a reason to suspect it will not be coming to Steam? Only EA seems to have taken their ball and gone home, right? I mean, I still play Call of Duty on Steam, so I assume Activision is still buddies with Gaben.

IF they do crossplay, then Microsoft will probably force them to put it up on their store only and it'll also probably be Windows 10 only. Gears 4 and Forza Horizon 3 for example are only available that way.

Since Activision is a big third party I doubt that'll be the case, but games are only put on Steam when they're confirmed for release and ready for pre-orders. Amazon will let you pre-order a rock if it gets them money.

Or maybe Steam is just trying to save you from yourself.

Never pre-order.

I 100% agree with this mentality. Pre-ordering is being a bad consumer.

That being said. I am 100% going to be a bad consumer and end up pre-ordering this to get early beta access.

I would never pre-order anything as well. Except for Destiny 2. I will definitely be pre-ordering Destiny 2. I am part of the problem.

So, I've got a bunch of Windows store credit, that I was going to use for Destiny 2 (well, first Forza until I found out about D2). Does the above conversation imply there may not be cross-play between Steam and Windows Store copies? Or just PC to console?

I have never seen a PC game that was not compatible with all other PC games bought any any platform. Usually it is the same game network with just different DRM. Often you can even run the windows bought through steam.

I love everyone here.

PS. I promise I am not day drinking right now.

Or, and hear me out, Be an educated consumer.

Eh, sure. My version of that happens to be to wait for a product, see if it's good, pay for said product when I'm ready to get it. I happily admit there are other ways to do things. I just feel I have been burned by the odd pre-order, so I refuse to do it on principle anymore.

Admittedly, I will still pre-order the day before release in order to acquire a tasty bonus, or if there's a beta available I'm pumped to play, or something other extenuating reason, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

It might be different for me than most. I tend to play almost everything and the joy of going from game to game for me is to experience gameplay mechanics and see just HOW they do things different. There are exceptions, like Uncharted 4 I was invested in seeing that story play out.

But because of that I follow developers, I consume a lot of the gameplay videos and trailers and I watch preview streams to see the game in action. I can get a pretty good sense of the game from all of that so I don't really need reviewers or peers to say yes or no on whether it's good or not and I'm not afraid to get a dud because there's still the value of seeing what in the systems and decisions make it a bad game.

That's sort of a rambling way to explain that since video games are my number one hobby and passion I can generally get a good enough sense on what to expect and when places like GreenManGaming offer 20-25% off for a pre-order it makes sense to just go ahead and go for it.

I thought you guys talk about cross-play between PC (windows) and xbone .

It hasn't been confirmed. But I think most if not all of us want it to happen. Even if it was just PVE crossplay that would be enough for me.

Haven't we seen this happen last year, though? I'm fairly sure I remember reading about some PC game where if you purchased from a different digital store you were in a separate network for multiplayer.

I actually didn't know that about GMG. I like your approach. I guess I am a more casual game player in general. I don't even necessarily regret buying bad games. The times I get annoyed are more often if I buy a premium pass or something that feels like it over-promised and under-delivered. I actually played Battlefield 4 (notoriously bad launch) and enjoyed it despite its flaws right up through the BF1 launch, so I can definitely see where you're coming from at any rate.

Maybe you're thinking of rocket league? Steam users used steamworks and non-steam users used psyonix's own thing. thought they could all play together there was sometimes issues with that.

I had a similar recollection, but I couldn't remember which game, which is what caused me to now wonder about Destiny 2. I think it had to do with some kind of hardware issue, maybe.

GMG is generally PC only(they have PS4 keys but they don't see the discounts that pc titles get) and they've had issues with questions about where their keys come from, but they now show that information on right side of the page.

Funny enough 3 guys in my regular gaming group just picked up BF4 in an origin sale and we've been playing the crap out of that lately. Still holds up, great game.

I'm really looking forward to hearing about the PC plans for Destiny 2. I think if they go the crossplay route it might not even be available available for steam, but I dunno. Lots of speculating.

I never set foot in a raid and Destiny is still in my top-5 of this generation. Needless to say I'll be there day one for Destiny 2.

Man, that is really crazy to me. I really think the raids are far and away the best pieces of content in the game. If you enjoy the game that much, you should find a way to check them out, even if it's just with a sherpa group leading you through.

On that note, I think Patrick Klepeck had a good article about an interesting way to allow more players to see the raid content: https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/arti...
