Florida News Story Catch-all

Someone needs to set that idiot on fire. Maybe he'll do it himself. Seems his level of intelligence is not high enough to have mastered fire completely.

Two jet-skiers nearly hit by cruise ship in Port Canaveral

Given the relative maneuverability of the vehicles involved, shouldn't that read "Two jet skiers run in front of cruise ship, hilarity ensues"?

They clearly need to read this book.

I know that's a real book, but I have to wonder about people on small craft who look at a freighter/tanker/cruise ship and think "I can beat that..." It's like someone in a car thinking "I can beat that train..."

It's not always so clear-cut. There are plenty of times when the visibility prevents you from seeing the ship, and if you're too close, or the conditions are bad enough, the big ship cannot see you either and can therefore not warn you of impending doom.

They were in Port Canaveral. The cruise ship was being led out by the harbor master. The cruise ships do not get really going until they hit the ocean. If you have ever been there, there isn't any visibility issues unless there is a storm and the jet skiers would not be in the water. The inlet is pretty small and choppy there near the mouth, it sorta sounds like the jet skiers lost control. (My mom lives 1/4 mile from there. We have gone on several cruises out of there and also had many early dinners there to watch the cruise ships leaving)

I was not commenting on the news story, but tanstaafl's book comment.

Florida neighborhood on alert for escaped cobra

And now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

I'm sorry but if you knowingly live in Florida and don't have a couple of mongooses patrolling your property, that's on you.

Seriously. Why are folks allowed to have animals like that in Florida?

I would almost be okay with their having them in someplace like Michigan where you know they are dead as parachute pants come September, but in Florida, they can instantly become in an invasive species.

Clearly you didn't read the article.

Totally guilty of making gender assumptions with regards to the perp. That will teach me.

Florida man tries to kiss a rattlesnake, gets bitten instead.

Said an eyewitness: "He was bit in the tongue by an eastern diamondback. That's all I know. I mean he was handling it. It was calm. He was drinkin' a little bit. Was holding the snake. Went to, like, kiss it and it bit him."

Once again proving my rule of thumb which is that pet snakes are generally smarter than their owners.

Wasn't a pet. They caught it in their yard and were keeping it in a trash can.
