Wii U Catch-All

Thanks for the BotW comments. I'd been hearing great things and was debating getting it for the WiiU or waiting until Christmas when I could justify getting a Switch. I feel more comfortable now just skipping the Switch and just getting the game.

Can you manage inventory or map on the tablet?

I'm not getting a switch until probably MK and was going to pick up Zelda then but with everyone losing their sh*t over it, I could save myself $60 later and just grab the WiiU version now.

No. The only specific gamepad functionality is tapping the screen to toggle off-TV mode.

I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure the game supports the Pro controller. You could use that throughout, if you wanted.

I'm using the pro controller. It would have been nice if the inventory was managed on the small screen. I guess they didn't want a feature to be on the Wii U version that wasn't possible on the Switch.

Makes sense but that's too bad. On the plus side, I tend to only use the pro controllers since I hate the tablet.

Both WiiU and Switch version tend to run the same (unless in tablet mode) so maybe I can send off my WiiU by actually playing a game on it?

The only real difference for Zelda is the Switch runs it at 900p and the WiiU at 720p. For me this equates to noticing lots of jaggies and aliasing on the WiiU version, not sure how much better the Switch looks since even it isn't full 1080p. It's not a big deal, but it is kind of glaring after playing other games on PS4/One/WiiU that look smooth and crisp by comparison. Other than that mild complaint I'm really enjoying the game so far. I think it's sold me on a Switch down the road just so I can play it mobile.

My sister picked up a Wii U with Mario Kart 8 tonight. The cashier asked her if she knew that the Switch was out and beckoned towards them on the shelves. She responded by saying that the games she wants to play are on Wii and Wii U. Glad to see her make a decision.

She has borrowed NSMBU, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Splatoon.

Maybe a silly question. Is there a timeline on when or if Miiverse will shutdown?

Nintendo hasn't said anything about discontinuing any online services for Wii U, including Miiverse, only that those services will not carry forward to the Switch.

But as an educated guess? I'd expect Miiverse to shutdown sometime in the next year, by the end of next year at the latest.

At least we don't have to worry about the Wii Shop ever closing down. It's still up on the Wii, and I imagine there's enough VC games still being bought that it's worth it to pay the server maintenance fees.

They closed down the DSi shop last (?) year. Wii shop will likely go offline in 2-3 years. Wii U is no longer being produced so the clock is officially ticking...

I imagine there's enough VC games still being bought that it's worth it to pay the server maintenance fees.

That seems kinda dubious given how VC has never raked in enough cash to be treated like a first-class feature

How did closing down the DSi shop work? Did theninform people first and then after they closed it down your purchases were gone for good?

They gave notification that DSi units would no longer be able to access the store, and you were encouraged to download any games you had purchased. The store was shut down a few months later, if I recall correctly. You maintain access to any games you've downloaded, but you're not able to redownload them or purchase any new games.

This is pretty much why I just cannot get excited about Nintendo's online stuff. They are so bad with it for every system they have.

The pro controller does work on the WiiU version. However the game does force you to use the gamepad for certain puzzles.

Are they expected to support legacy hardware indefinitely? Nobody else gets held to that standard, unless I'm mistaken.

I know, unlike Microsoft keeping Halo 2 on the original Xbox online even to this day. Why can't Nintendo get with the times?

Nintendo slashes price on over dozen 3DS and Wii U games

Wii U 32GB Console + Nintendo Land (Refurbished) — $200 (list price $300)

Almost every time we power on the Wii U lately, the left stick on the tablet has a slight bias in that it will either have an up or down tilt just enough to make the cursor drift while at rest when you release the stick quickly in Smash Bros. (my kids have basically started demanding to watch us play, so I'm finally playing that game a bit now) and this also means using up to jump becomes very hard to pull off.

Eh, I get game servers going off, but it doesn't seem tough to maintain download servers.
That said, I'm mostly just grumpy at how not user friendly their on line stuff is. The 1 DS and 1 WiiU per account. The frankly poor design of their interfaces. The last of friendly features for buying games.

Note: I still own the majority of the systems N has put out since the NES. I love their games and hw, just cannot stand their online.
I can't wait until tonight when wife and I will open up Zelda.

That's still a standard that their competitor isn't being held to. A single Vita is registered to a PSN account. The PS4 allows you to play a game owned by another account - only if the system is registered as the primary system for the account that owns the game.

Like game servers, storefronts and download servers cost money to maintain. Various services have already been turned off for the PSP. I expect we'll see the same happen with the Vita and possibly the home consoles once they aren't profitable to keep running.

Hmm, now that I think about it, the DS is the only time where I've had multiple of the items at one time. Otherwise, I've had a PS3/Vita or 360/X1, but not multiples.

I thought you could still get PSP games downloaded, but it seems I was mistaken.
But it does look like you can attach multiple Vitas to a single PSN account.
Xbox does have a mix of games tied to hw and account which seems to be nice in a family plan way.
You may not be able to use both in online mode at the same time, but that's a problem I've had with PSN, Steam, bnet, etc. I wish they would fix it, so you can only play the game on one at a time, but other games could be played on the device.
So there are things I would like Nintendo to improve on. As I said, I've spent enough money on Nintendo, that I think I can off some criticism where I think they can fix things. The friend code on the Wii was pretty bad, but they improved it somewhat for the WiiU. I just want them to continue to do so.

As for the servers, obviously Steam has spoiled me since I can still download pretty much anything since Steam started allowing it around 10 years ago. Games servers I get, but the stores and download servers "should" be more simple if the newer versions are still active.

Am I too far off topic yet?

Why keep a storefront running when no one is purchasing anything on it? Why should Nintendo be tied to spending money to support an actual dead product. I can't wrap my head around that at all.

Edit: You can bet Valve will shut it all down the second Steam isn't making them money. No one is doing any of this out of charity.

Yoink! That's a price cut I can get behind. I didn't think that game was ever going hit impulse territory, but here we are.

Edit: I'm talking about Captain Toad+ Amiibo. That might be important for my comment.

That game shipped at a "must buy NOW!" price, friend - without the Amiibo.

You can play games purchased on one account across at least 2 consoles simultaneously on PSN. My son and I play Overwatch together from one purchase.

I grabbed it, too. No hesitation.

Free game! (Haven't played Swap Fire yet, but FREE!)

Had a chance to chat with the developer a while back. Interesting premise of a "sports-puzzle shooter" - when you shoot your opponent, you swap places with them.

Couch multiplayer only.

You can still download pap games but not on psp, you can download them to your ps3 and transfer to pap or download them to Vita and play them there. The best part the game is not locked to one device, I have a copy of ff6 on my psp vita and ps3 at the same time

It's been that price for 2 years on the Nintendo web site.

EDIT: The console. Some of the game prices are obviously new, like Captain Toad above.

Also incorrect. You can redownload games on your PSP, but you can't buy new ones or browse the store from your PSP. (You can buy PSP games from the web store and then download them to your PSP.)

The most popular Wii emulator now does ‘the unthinkable’

You can now hit up the Wii Shop Channel with Dolphin

The team behind Dolphin, the best-known, most technically stunning Wii and Gamecube emulator, just added an impressive feature in its latest update. Users of the free PC software can now access the Wii Shop Channel. Downloading demos and even buying WiiWare and Virtual Consoles games is now possible through the emulator.

“Getting to the point where we could go shopping on Dolphin was a long and tumultuous one,” developer JMC47 wrote of the update, which is broken down in the video above. “We couldn't even connect to the update servers a few weeks ago, and had little idea why.”

After several weeks of tinkering with the software, Dolphin finally supports the Wii Shop Channel as of today’s version. The team is still working to perfect emulation of the eShop, but anyone with Dolphin can now make full use of the Wii Shop Channel. That means they can add more points to their accounts, download games and then play them with the benefit of the program’s upscaler.
