Wii U Catch-All

God, Chris, you didn't have to jump down his throat. It's okay to laugh a bit and have fun with the things you love.

honestly, I debated that second L pretty heavily for almost a second.

I stand by it.

Spoiler:

this is a joke. I'll still fight you but wind waker was terrible.

Spoiler:

this is also a joke, it was the last zelda I finished.

Spoiler:

ranking zeldas is dumb

Spoiler:

top 3 zelda rankings:

1.) Mine.
2.) I don't know, Clocky's? That's probably fine as she'll have points that I think are dumb but I can't argue against.
3.) literally everyone elses'.

Yay! I'm #2!

I played super Mario 3-D world with my daughter last night. She's six years old, and the fact that I could take on the goombas while she was getting used to just moving around and jumping, was a very big plus. She liked it and I think we have a great game we can play together now. Thanks for the suggestions!

That's my two year old's favorite game. He'll run over to the game case, pull each one out until he's got 3D World, take it over and place it in front of the TV, then head over to his favorite spot on the couch to wait until it comes on. He can't play it yet, but man does he love watching it.

Posted in the BotW thread, but again here for more exposure...

Has anyone seen impressions on the wii u version of BotW yet? (.vs. the ubiquitous Switch impressions, awashing us in glory...)

Awesome! I have been singing the praises of how 3D World has built-in options for players of all abilities for years! Best Mario ever!

When we got it, my oldest child would play with me and I'd carry her over tough jumps or she'd go into a bubble when the going got tough, or scary. Now my youngest can play solo (or they co-op) and can use the invincible Tanooki suit if he can't get through a level. They really went deep with enabling kids to play this game.

It's a far cry from Mario Kart 8, which sadly now lets every racer finish the race. Ending it when the penultimate race finishes was actually a blessing for playing with really young kids. It doesn't matter anymore at my house, but that sucked. My son would have to hand over his controller and everyone would wait while I ran all his laps. With MKWii and every previous game I can recall, a young kid would just have the feeling of running out of time rather than needing someone else to finish the race.

And now that everyone is asleep, I'll say that Wind Waker is one of the greatest Zeldas of all time, far better than that dreck that is Zelda 2. Fortunately, Zelda 2 was later remade as a much better game by a third-party developer.

I'm really excited to see how bumper mode works in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It keeps you from going off the track, which is the problem I see most kids having with the game.

And as with that golden suit, I expect many critics and gamers to miss the point and complain that Nintendo is dumbing the game down.

I have only heard brief mentions of this bumoer mode, but it sounds like it could be better than either MKWii or MK8 for kids.

Personally, I just don't use the golden suit, and didn't use the one in 3D Land either. I'll admit that I didn't realize back then that it might be great for kids.

For most games, being able to tailor the difficulty is strictly better. It's all gain. I really enjoy both the granularity and organic nature of the way they do it in 3D World. I'd love to read an article about how they developed those different mechanics. Did they playtest with parents and kids co-oping?

I read somewhere that Nintendo just decided to dumb the game down.

Yoshi's Wooley World is another that did varying difficulty fabulously. There's the option to flip on chill mode... there's dozens of badges available to adjust difficulty.

The beauty is that the game is a very demanding platformer at the high end and is playable by a non-gamer or kid on the low end... there are loads of different ways to tweak the game to find something in between those two extremes.

Exactly! This is another one that my youngest has enjoyed both solo and co-op.

I have started 3D World once again. This is the third go, I think. Expectations are no where near as high. I am not going to try to ace every level until they become interesting enough to generate replay value for me. This hampered my progress last go around, and with a slow ramp up that was a poor decision. A few levels every night. Let's see.

My sister has decided to buy a Wii U. Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World have been on her mind since she played both here. I urged her to wait out the Switch reveal. She has. £200 or less gets a Wii U with Mario Kart. £320 or thereabouts for a Switch with Mario Kart is outside her casual bracket. Also, no 3D World. But! I think she would love Snipper Clips, and the Battle Mode of Mario Kart Switch! My not getting in on the Switch has likely dented its appeal, being the video game fanatic. I'd feel a little two faced to direct her towards a Switch now as I am not, not at this time. £200 goes a long way towards getting one, though.

Well, if she's getting a WiiU, make sure to direct her towards Captain Toad if she enjoys those levels in 3D World. That game is pure joy.

I've mentioned that she can dip into my collection, should she opt for a Wii U. I'm only actively playing a few.

I laid out the differences, when asked, between the Wii U and the Switch after work today. Completely portable verses tethered to the console. The need to buy an additional controller (or two or three) for both, and their costs. The Switch rolls with two out of the box. The upcoming games verses the existing games I think will be worthwhile. Price. And that I would be getting a Switch if not for Zelda being on Wii U (more than anything else). Also, that there may be difficulty in locating a Switch on Friday. She is off work that day, though. Me, too, now.

It'll be interesting to see what she chooses. I'm excited to see if we could get some multiplayer happening online, on either console, like old fashioned living room play with our NES.

If my sister and my best buddy (Spikeout) wind up with a Switch and Mario Kart, by heck will I be feeling left out. This is what I wanted with the Wii U damn it!

Personally, I'd invest in the future by getting a Switch. Two of the WiiU's biggest online games are new and/or improved on the Switch - Mario Kart 8D and Splatoon 2. You have to think that a Smash announcement will come this year, possibly at E3.

So now that Breath of the Wild is out, I'm wondering what other Wii U games I should try and procure before they become hard to find at retail. Here's the list of games we own, what do people recommend?

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate!

Ohh, you reminded me I need to get Xeno.
Bayonneta is pretty good if you like that type of game and are fine with the themes.
Your list is also reminding me I need to spend more time with my WiiU.

Lego City: Undercover. Best game I have played on the system and one of the best games I have played.

There seems to be a distinct lack of 9-foot, gun-mounted stiletto toting Umbra witches on that list.

I agree with others that Bayonetta 2 is worth getting your hands on, especially if you liked The Wonderful 101. Lego City Undercover is good, but since it's coming out for the Switch and other platforms soon, I wouldn't prioritize it. Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard are the biggest first-party games you don't have. I honestly can't say if they're worth getting; my copy is still in the shrinkwrap. Rayman Origins is far and away best played on Wii U, so I'd get a copy of it there if you can, and the two HD Zelda remasters are also well worth getting.

Edit: I forgot Hyrule Warriors! It's a much more fun and engaging game than you'd expect.

What are you doing, we don't have time for all these games!

Still no Wii U price drop? Really, Nintendo?

Stele wrote:

They're not going to drop the price. It's dead, discontinued, and there are no units left in stores to sell. It's like the Vita: they're not dropping the price, they're letting retailers (at best) clearance them off shelves.

Edit: I took a peek at different sites to see what the availability is on new Wii U consoles. Best Buy doesn't list them at all. Target and Gamestop list them but say they're not available in stores or to ship. Walmart and Amazon only list third-party sellers. Nintendo itself only sells refurbished systems now. There's nothing left for them to drop the price on.

The Wii U is tough to locate here, in the UK, too. My sister has one retailer (stocking the Mario Kart 8 bundle) to choose from, if not for that it's second hand.

The Nintendo Official UK Store do stock them, but they're asking £249.99 and that's not going to happen.

This is the reason I went out and bought a WiiU version of BotW this morning. I was worried the print run would be small, and not that well supported (especially down here in Australia).

I thought there would be HUGE differences between the two (WiiU and Switch), but for all intents and purposes, there only appears to be "minor" differences according to what I've read and seen on the internet. It really is WiiU game they put on the Switch (it may not be, but I'm loving this state of denial, so don't crush it for me ).

This video was the final convincer.

I'm playing Breath of the Wild on Wii U and, while there are noticeable issues, they are so far very minor and do not harm the overall experience. The frame rate stutters a little bit in some areas and situations, not for long and not too badly. The towns are the main offenders; they feel a bit sludgy without becoming too slow. It's forgiveable because they are detailed, busy areas. In terms of resolution etc, there's a bit of blurriness in some detail and some jaggies, again more noticeable in some areas than others. It's not that bad; mainly it makes me feel like my contact lenses are slightly out of position from time to time. Loading times aren't that bad by modern console standards. I was playing Dragon Age Inquisition on PS4 prior to this and Zelda's loads zip along by comparison.

If you want to play it and the Wii U is all you have, go for it. It's an outstanding game.

NB: the boxed copy's install process takes about 20 minutes.

This made me smile. I went through a similar mental justification myself, only I attributed it to my glasses being a little unclean, and the TV not being as "new as it could be".

Thanks for the other impressions as well, I appreciate it, and it makes me happy to have bought in on this version, rather than the other option of getting a Switch, which down here in Australia is currently a AU$549 proposition (with BotW).

Actually, make that AU$649, as I'm guessing I'd need second controllers for my kids, and then maybe a pro controller, so make that AU$739... Yeah, I think I made the right choice.

Same game, for one tenth of the outlay. I can live with a little stuttering from time to time

I just came in here to post this. The game is a marvel, and the Wii U experience doesn't feel significantly diminished. It's less smooth and sharp than Nintendo's other Wii U games, but I haven't felt like I was playing a game clearly unsuited to the hardware.
