The Hunter: Catch All

Demiurge heard it's kind of a buggy mess right now. Might want to wait a bit.

Yeah, I hate mosquito season.

Buggy as in crashy buggy or buggy as in Roach buggy? If it was the latter, that might be kinda fun.

I assume he might crashy buggy.

Think i said it years ago, but i really would love to see a MMO done with this engine.

This looks rather awesome - Any word on whether it will hit consoles as well?

I've heard the game is pretty rough right now. I think I may stick with the old version until they get things out. Besides, my sub is still good until May.

Resubscribing to this thread to see how this new game tracks. Looks like it's not F2P anymore. Might be good Steam sale fodder down the road if it's buggy right now.

I just checked, and it sure looks like it. That's awesome. I really didn't like the subscription thing and microtransactions. I'm almost tempted to get it and deal with the bugs.

I caved and just bought it. I have the day off, so I'll let you all know how it goes. $30 without free-to-play options seems like a steal.

I'm running a GTX 1080 and an i7 4770K, so we'll see how buggy things are with that setup.

Well, it's now the game I always wanted it to be. They took out the microtransactions and added in light RPG and story elements. It's just a blast to explore and hunt stuff now. I played for a couple hours without any issues and then the game crashed as I was trying to exit the game.

They seem to have added more small wildlife so the world feels a bit more alive than in the past.

This sounds great. I'm not ready to jump on it yet, but I'll be looking for sales so I'll have it when I have more time.

Also, I actually liked the microtransactions in a way. I never paid for them, but the correlation with buying hunting tags made a lot of sense. Still, this is better.

They weren't bad, but they still detracted from the game for me. I've played a couple more hours now, and it's pretty great. You can just steadily play to unlock and buy everything. The map is really fun to explore and identify areas and things that you can then fast travel too. I feel like they sat down, looked at what a lot people would rather have and made a standalone game for those people. I'm guessing the FTP version is still running as an alternative.

There are some characters and story in the game that motivate you to explore and try new things. It's light, but it would be so hilarious if they had a serious, crazy, Twin Peaks style story buried in this game. One can dream. I could armchair direct the hell out of this game.

Does it have multiplayer? I can't remember if the original version did.

They added to the original later. And yes, according to the Steam page, it's multiplayer. One of the beta vids on youtube I watched said it wasn't added yet when that vid was made, but maybe it's there now that it has launched.

I took a trip back into the FtP The Hunter a few weeks ago, just doing a free hunt for Whitetail. Was tempted to pay some bucks for the gear to do some bird hunting, but was quickly deterred by their ftp model. Nice to see a standalone game finally!

Yeah, MP appears to be working, and you can have up to 7 players from what I can tell. Haven't actually tried a game yet.

How's it look on that GTX 1080?

Really good. It runs like butter at ultra and 2560x1440. It essentially looks like the old game from a couple years ago but the draw distance is better, there's less aliasing, the vegetation is more dense, and the lighting is better. They do some nice depth of field stuff with the binoculars and scope. There are a lot more smaller animals running around than in the previous game so it feels a bit more alive. You'll hear a rustling from somewhere and think it's a deer only to find it's a squirrel.

I'll try and take some screenshots next time I play. There's a photo mode I haven't played with much in the short time I've played.

I've given in and decided to pick this up tomorrow. Anyone interested in a group hunt sometime this weekend?

Maaaaybe. Not sure how busy I'll be, and I have NieR to play. Should be able to spare a couple hours for a quick hunt.

NP either way. Looks like there's a bunch of stuff to unlock, which you can't do in multiplayer.

Well that stinks. Yeah, I'll try and figure out tomorrow morning how things are looking for me. The light RPG and story mechanics are really great, I think. It's all there just to encourage you to explore the environment and never feels tacked on or obtrusive. I really like what they did with it.

Alright, I can put in a couple hours at some point today. I'll be checking the thread regularly, so just post when/if you want to play.

Tried it out, didn't really mesh with me. The prey AI behavior isn't the greatest.

I keep getting a hankering to get back into this. Steam Sale for a few more hours so I'm looking for some enabling on the current state of this. Twenty Bucks for a nice walk with maybe some light fauna-murder?

Edit: How did I not know that the Free to Play version still exists but has been renamed to theHunter Classic? Installing that to see if this itch just needs a brief jaunt through some empty woods or if it has legs. Would still appreciate any current input on the paid version if anyone is still playing this!

I got the paid version, and it's quite nice. I only put a few hours into it. I liked that I didn't have to see all the ftp stuff tacked in, and it isn't particularly expensive. I actually have a hankering to get back to it and see if anything has changed. I think it was a bit buggy for some people back when I got it, but I didn't have any issues.

Got Call of the Wild on Steam sale on the 4th. Game is lovely, bugs are not. I can play about an hour before it crashes to desktop. Yesterday I had a crash that ate my progress. So frustrating for a year old game.

If any of you happened to pick it up on the sale this week, I'd be more than happy to show you around in some multiplayer. My steam is the same as on here and I'm vacation, so I'll be around quite a bit.

I am currently rebuilding the main game machine. Tracked my crashes to at least one bad stick of RAM caused by proximity to a huge cpu cooler. I hope to be back running Saturday and will look you up. I am up to about lvl 30 at this point but have only played on Hirschfelden solo.

I am fishdude on Steam. Will send an friend request when i get the main system running again.

Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out on steam. If you're lvl 30, you may be the one showing me around!
