NieR Automata (aka Nieronetta) Catch-All

Well, back in the day, way way back, up until the PSOne and N64 days, maybe even the PS2 days, Famitsu was considered the authority on how good a Japanese game might be. There was a time, a long one, when that 40/40 Famitsu score was so rare that a game getting it basically guaranteed a top-tier quality title. That, of course, has changed, which is why people mostly seem to talk about them getting paid for high scores.

I argued it over in the Persona 5 thread the last time this came up, but I don't think that really holds up to scrutiny. What I mostly see is a lot of people calling foul over games that are "obviously bad" getting better scores than games that are "obviously good".

So if you have 30 minutes to spare and don't mind spoiling the plot of all the Drakenguard games... here's a video attempting to explain the links between those games, Nier, and Nier Automata.

Edit: Since I haven't played Nier, I'm hoping someone can answer a question raised by the video:

Spoiler:

The illness described by the video, due to Caim and the dragon coming through to fight the Queen, is where people turn into salt (or are made into mindless monsters), but in Nier, I thought the illness was black writing appearing on skin. Is that the same thing? The same illness?

It's not the same thing. The writing that appears on the skin is called the Black Scrawl, and it's caused by the Gestalt (soul) of a corresponding Replicant (body) losing sentience.

The disease from the Queen is what wipes out humanity and forces them to create the Gestalt Project to begin with. They divide their Gestalt (soul) from their physical bodies and then create clones or Replicants who are immune to the Queen's disease. However, over time the Replicants begin to develop their own consciousness, which causes the Gestalt to lose theirs. That afflicts the Replicant with the Black Scrawl (which isn't a virus but a replication error).

So the replicant gaining consciousness causes the shade/gestalt to go feral (sort of?) which in turn causes the replicant to develop the black scrawl and eventually die?
Does that, in turn, cause the shade/gestalt to die?

As I understand it, the Gestalts remain alive after their Replicants are lost, but they have no consciousness. They become the mindless, violent Shades that wander the world.

Well this thread went off the lore deep end in a hurry.

I'll check back in later and maybe we can discuss moose riding some more.

Sorry. I love diving into lore like this.
I'm the guy reading and thinking about the lore in the FROM games.

More lore! I think it's super cool because these games can be a little obtuse at times.

Honestly, I think a game that had the same story but a more Western aesthetic and design would have been a huge hit for its big, sci-fi ideas and depth.

That's a great video. I kinda had a vague idea of everything, but that cleared up a few things. I'd probably need to watch it monthly for a year to really get all that lore straight.

I love that the lore is there, but I'm not super into spending time making sure I have it all straight. I sure wouldn't want to have to explain it all to somebody.

I think Kojima still takes the cake for crazy lore, but Yoko Taro comes in a close second.

That damn second graphic fooled me. I thought the release date got pushed forward.

You damn bastards.

Yeah, it's the countdown for the Japanese version. I'm going to be super tempted to buy it off the Japanese store but know I shouldn't.

These illustrations are awesome. So far, #9 and the first #8 are my favorites. I like how different the styles are from one to the next. Thanks for sharing, Tuffalo!

#8 puts me in mind of a Persona game art.

The hype for this is finally starting to hit me; had just completed NieR this past month, and now both the boyfriend and I are hooked on the soundtrack.

Also happy-ish to see the proposed length? It's going to be a busy March/April for me.

Hahaha!

I saw the 10.3.17 and for a second thought it had been delayed again!

Yeah, my heart skipped a beat when I saw that.

There are two NieR songs in FF XV now that you can listen to while driving. One just seems to be Song of the Ancients but the other song is Weight of the World from Automata which is cool. I had heard the live version of that but not the album version.

Here are a bunch more of those countdown pictures:

Well lookie there. It's another Souls-eque death system!
The repair thing is new, though. It'd be interesting in the Souls game if you could fight alongside an AI controlled version of yourself.

Awwww crap. Now I have to go a put some money into this game... dang it (not really bothered by it... just bothered that I don't have enough time).

Edit: Wait a sec

Hurray!

Don't be excited! Looks like Steam release isn't imminent just yet. Or S-E's official trailer omits it on purpose. Dunno. The trailer Gematsu was given does list the Steam date as 3/10. I don't know what's going on...

New trailer though!

Ugh... willpower to not preorder fading.

The spear! That little spin when she's holding it at her side is badass. I didn't even realize there was going to be a spear weapon.
