[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

I rarely use the words "Nazi", "fascist", or "white supremacist" to describe someone. When I do, it's because it's the most concise, clinical description I can find.

After all, "Luegenpresse" is literally what people were yelling at a certain candidate's campaign rallies: Donald Trump Supporters Are Using a Nazi Word to Attack Journalists, The ugly history of ‘Lügenpresse,’ a Nazi slur shouted at a Trump rally, Donald Trump supporters use Nazi term to abuse journalists: Backers of Republican candidate filmed using a German word meaning 'lying press' made popular by Hitler's party

Today is the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that resulted in over a hundred thousand Japanese Americans being put in concentration camps. 62% of them were American Citizens, many third generation.

"I am determined that if they have one drop of Japanese blood in them, they must go to camp."
— Colonel Karl Bendetsen, Administrator, Wartime Civil Control Administration, 1942

There were fears of a "fifth column" of infiltrators, but the federal government's own reports showed that there was no no danger. Indeed the reasons it was embraced were openly racist:

“We’re charged with wanting to get rid of Japs for selfish reasons. We do. It’s a question of whether the white man lives on the Pacific Coast or the brown men. …If all the Japs were removed tomorrow, we’d never miss them in two weeks, because the white farmers can take over and produce everything the Jap grows. And we don’t want them back when the war ends, either.”

(Austin E. Anson, managing secretary of the Salina Vegetable Grower-Shipper Association, quoted in the Saturday Evening Post, May 9, 1942)

Racism was prevalent:

In 1944, in Korematsu v. United States, the Supreme Court found the Executive Order to be constitutional.

That top image is Four young evacuees from Sacramento, California, read comic books at the newsstand in the Tule Lake Relocation Center, in Newell, California, on July 1, 1942. The boy on the left is reading Marvel Mystery 34 that contains the stories “Exposed! The Jap Invaders” & “Dr. Watson Makes Monkeys Out of the Japs”.

The photo was taken inside the largest of the camps, surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers. People interned at Tule Lake include Pat Morita, George Takei, Harvey Itano, Jimmy T. Murakami, and Bob Matsui.

There's a collection of WRA photos by Dorothea Lange in the Online Archive of California, including some that were not published at the time because the government censors deemed them to contradict the desired image of happy, willing prisoners.

Just look at the progress made since the election:

1. Unprecedented levels of ongoing civic engagement.

2. Millions of Americans now know who their state and federal representatives are without having to google.

3. Millions of Americans are exercising more. They're holding signs and marching every week.

4. Alec Baldwin is great again. Everyone's forgotten he's kind of a jerk.

5. The Postal Service is enjoying the influx cash due to stamps purchased by millions of people for letter and postcard campaigns.

6. Likewise, the pharmaceutical industry is enjoying record growth in sales of anti-depressants.

7. Millions of Americans now know how to call their elected officials and know exactly what to say to be effective.

8. Footage of town hall meetings is now entertaining.

9. Tens of millions of people are now correctly spelling words like emoluments, narcissist, fascist, misogynist, holocaust and cognitive dissonance.

10. Everyone knows more about the rise of Hitler than they did last year.

11. Everyone knows more about legislation, branches of power and how checks and balances work.

12. Marginalized groups are experiencing a surge in white allies.

13. White people in record numbers have just learned that racism is not dead. (See #6)

14. White people in record numbers also finally understand that Obamacare IS the Affordable Care Act.

15. Stephen Colbert's "Late Night" finally gained the elusive #1 spot in late night talk shows, and Seth Meyers is finding his footing as today's Jon Stewart.

16. "Mike Pence" has donated millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood since Nov. 9th.

17. Melissa FREAKING McCarthy.

18. Travel ban protesters put $24 million into ACLU coffers in just 48 hours, enabling them to hire 200 more attorneys. Lawyers are now heroes.

19. As people seek veracity in their news sources, respected news outlets are happily reporting a substantial increase in subscriptions, a boon to a struggling industry vital to our democracy.

20. Live streaming court cases and congressional sessions are now as popular as the Kardashians.

21. Massive cleanup of facebook friend lists.

22. People are reading classic literature again.
Sales of George Orwell's "1984" increased by 10,000% after the inauguration. (Yes, that is true. 10,000%. 9th grade Lit teachers all over the country are now rock stars.)

23. More than ever before, Americans are aware that education is important. Like, super important.

24. Now, more than anytime in history, everyone believes that anyone can be President. Seriously, anyone.

Clearly we cannot count on Swedish security systems...

Farley, do you have a link for that list? I'd like to spread it around.

I just copied it from here http://imgur.com/gallery/lSgsm You could link to that or copy it yourself.

Apparently it was written by a woman named Susan Keller

18. The others are silly pictures, but 18 reminds us of one of the many reasons he should have never been president.
