Wii U Catch-All

Time to pour one out for the Wii U. Production has officially ended: http://www.usgamer.net/articles/wii-...

What a great console. The introduction of off-TV play was something I never knew I wanted. Saying that, it is something I can very easily live without. Nevertheless, it was a welcome bonus on occasion. The second screen functionality was okay. It was better on the DS due to the close proximity of its screens. Same distance from the user. Similar screen sizes. A mere flick of the eye to travel between. These considerations were not as well balanced between a television and the GamePad.

I can rattle off many a game that I enjoyed immensely, or at worst could appreciate whilst seeing a moderate return on. Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Affordable Space Adventures, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land, and Super Mario 3D World.

I have yet to find the time to play Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, or Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I never got around to picking up Super Mario Maker, Pikmin 3, or Yoshi's Woolly World. I dabbled with Smash Bros, late in the day, only to discover that it is not for me. I can see its appeal, though.

As someone who skipped the Wii generation the Wii U opened up that library to me. The backwards compatibility has allowed me to experience Metroid Prime, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I also have in my possession a copy of Super Mario Galaxy, and Pikmin 2. I then nabbed a digital copy of Super Mario Galaxy 2 when it was introduced. Metroid Prime 2 & 3 are also waiting in the wings.

I played through Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Duck Tales Remastered, and Child of Light, on Wii U. I had a brief love affair with X Type + as discovered through Miiverse.

The Virtual Console granted ease of access to Super Metroid, my personal GOTY 2016. Waiting to be explored are Super Mario World, and A Link to the Past.

What a software lineup the Wii U has. I'm still playing and forsee it taking up a lot of 2017 as the Switch is not yet on my radar.

And Crecente's point is...?

I'm not surprised. Honestly, the demo didn't look that great, and the interesting ideas they had look like they were folded into Arms.

The Arms link is something I was wondering about too. Seems likely but I don't remember which team is working on it or their relationship to Miyamoto.

Stuff like this is why I miss Iwata Asks

I wonder when the last non-digital game will come out for the Wii-U?

That's the last Nintendo-published one, but I'll be surprised if there are many more after that from third parties.

Before I would spend a bunch of money on the WiiU, I'd wait and see what the Switch VC situation is going to be.

I'm also guessing that titles like Super Mario 3D World and Captain Toad will end up on the eShop of a future console, assuming they aren't ported. Nintendo is coming right out of the gates with ports/sequels of a couple of the most crowd-pleasing WiiU games with Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8D.

Perhaps they'll also consider doing a port of 3D World and Captain Toad (which, as mentioned above, is a spin-off from 3D World) that bundles them together, in order to expose them to the much larger numbers of Switch owners.

That would move me to the Switch possibly, but right now what it is is that I've just gone through a major crisis with my family. I'd like to get together with my brothers once in a while and play Nintendo console games. Seems like the Wii U would probably be the best choice for that.

Hey, sometimes the new hotness is what brings people together!

But seriously, good luck with your brothers. I'm fortunate that I get to see mine regularly, although seldom for fun.

I'm surprised they didn't release a new model made with cheaper parts like Sony and MS does with their consoles.

Nintendo doesn't typically do that for their home systems until they're very long in the tooth. Even then we didn't get a new model for N64 or GameCube. So I'm assuming consumer demand plays a significant factor in that decision.

There wasn't enough demand to justify the costs. As it was, they had trouble clearing the existing stock they had.

Nintendo kind of makes their system with less expensive parts right from the get go unlike the other two so it's probably a less necessary step I'd think.

Played Wind Waker HD over the weekend, well daughter was sick so she sat on my lap and she played the simple bits and I drove the harder parts. This is the first Zelda that actually clicks with me, never played one growing up and bounced of off OoT, mostly due to the aimlessness of the early parts. We only got the end of Dragon Roost Cavern though, so early days still.

It looks so goddamned lovely though, what a treat to the eyes. Makes me smile just looking at it. I'm less enamored with the context-sensitive controls though, I've rolled into the lava like ten times due to missing picking up a rock or whatever.

It's the fourth best Zelda game IMO. It's great to see it have such good impressions after recalling how much backlash it got at release.

Interesting, so you'd rank Wind Waker right behind Majora's Mask, Zelda II and Twilight Princess? It's pretty remarkable the severe drop off in quality from those top 3 to the rest of the series.

HEY. We have a whole thread for that.

My list is a bit different. LTTP, Majora's Mask, OoT. TP would be in my top three if I was only ranking the worlds and storyline, but it is barely edged out by WW overall for me. I really like Zelda 2 but I don't think I consider it a proper Zelda game so it is kind of its own thing in my mind.

I'm probably going to regret this, but why don't you consider Zelda II a "proper" Zelda game?

So will we all.

Oh god, is this going to turn into "is Zelda an RPG?"

Zelda 2 is, which is why it's not a proper one.

Zelda 2 is definitely a Zelda game. It's just ..... different. I guess Nintendo was pretty brave to release it after the success of the first Zelda. Or flat out nuts. Different time and no internet meant less public scrutiny.

Zelda: LttP > Oracle of Ages/Seasons > Zelda DX > FF7 > Goku

A number of NES sequels tended to be significantly different from their predecessors. But that was a time when genres and franchises hadn't calcified and lower production costs meant they could experiment more with a given series.

And before fans had calcified into throwing a sh*tfit over any significant changes to their favorites.
