Horizon Zero Dawn Catch-All

Yeah. Killzone is not inspiring. You don't play graphics.

The Nintendo presentation last night has to be bumming out the people making this game, right?

I mean, I can't be the only one who is now wondering whether I should pick this up at launch, or relegate it to the wishlist and play the new Zelda instead, right?

I gotta imagine the % of people that have a PS4 that we're interested in this title but also have either a Wii U or plan to get a Switch and Zelda is fairly small.

Not sure Zelda is what hurts this game but rather it's being made by a dev that doesn't exactly have a strong track record.

My thoughts exactly. If the Wii U proved anything it's that the number of people that will buy a Nintendo console is not as substantial as they hoped.

Heh, you're probably right on all counts.

But, it's certainly created an issue for this game in my world.

IMO Killzone 2 was outstanding in terms of gameplay, Killzone 3 was great too. It's only the first one & Shadowfall (which was hugely disappointing) that have average reviews.

I can only be disappointed by this game. It looks absolutely amazing - not merely in terms of graphics.

Will try very hard not to preorder. Or, I would have to try, if Torment wasn't going to release a few days earlier, hopefully removing all desire for other games for a while.

Yeah, I didn't realize how close this and the Switch would be, and with Nier: Automata similarly around the corner to boot.

Looking forward to impressions, I'll be snagging this one later.

I thought the original was good for its time. Nothing more. I did like it. Whatever one we tried for the multiplayer, and a brief attempt at the campaign from me, was average as average could be. Then that launch PS4 one I watched you play was generic, so generic, terribly so. I think all I did was scoff in derision considering the hype going in.

Horizon already looks much more interesting to play, to be fair.

One of the PS I Love you XOXO crew has played it 'extensively' and thinks it's very good.

From most hands on reports it plays extremely well, I'm more worried about a lacklustre story & weak dialogue, I think that's likely gonna be their pitfall.

New story trailer which made me feel at different points worse and better about story and dialogue. Unfortunately slightly spoilery so it might be time for media blackout. I acknowledge that I am probably way more excited about this game than almost anyone.

I'm also super excited for it, but I've been on media blackout for months now

Unfortunately, after seeing the Zelda release date, I decided to look up release dates for most of my most anticipated games of this year, and I came to an unfortunate realization...

Horizon: Feb 28
Zelda: March 3
Nier Automata: March 7
Mass Effect: March 21
Persona 5: April 4

5 of them within 5 weeks. First world problems.

I also have relatives staying with me from the end of February until mid-April, so my game is going to be limited.

Since my Switch is already pre-ordered with Zelda, I think Horizon will end up being a later purchase for me.

Don't worry, Dyni. I'm right there with you in having to put Horizon aside.

I had a similar realization about (mostly) the same games. I've limited myself to just a couple game purchases until November, and I don't want to blow them early in the year. Then again, looking at the release list for the rest of the year, there's not a lot from April onward that has caught my eye yet.

Right now, this game, Gravity Rush 2, and The Last Guardian are vying for being one of my purchases.

I'm trying a similar approach. Horizon: Zero Dawn is contending with Mass Effect: Andromeda, Nex Machina, Matterfall, For Honor, and The Last Guardian. Two may be all. Perhaps three.

I will definitely be getting Breath of the Wild.

Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey, depend on how things develop with the Switch when (if) bundles arrive.

This is with potentially ignoring Shenmue 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Horizon: Zero Dawn has its work cut out.

You guys are talking about one of the reasons why, over in the "12 month pile" thread, I often calendar out an entire year. Helps me plan those purchases.

As excited as I am about Mass Effect: Andromeda, given the history of DLC and the franchise, it seems like a good pick to put off playing for a while... just in case, you know, a few months from now there's an add-on that is vitally important to the story. And unless you have a preorder locked in, it'll probably be tough to get a Switch. There's still a lot going on, and everybody has different priorities; but for me at least, I think this'll be a Day One play.

Seems like the latest is using a less aggressive AA technique.

The Playstation Store is selling a 15", $200 statue of one of the in-game beasts, The Thunderjaw: http://gear.playstation.com/en-us/ho...

Also includes an "exclusive world map," "Aloy’s 'Focus' earpiece," and "two exclusive lithographs."

I'm the kind of dude who loves having figures around his home office/mancave, but it's a tough sell when the game isn't even out yet. Already rolling the dice with the collector's edition of the game, now that I have this awesome Re:Core statue that I have no emotional attachment to because the game was kinda crap.

Come on guys, let us buy these things after trying the game. You're making me worried.

Austin Walker and Danielle Riendeau are showing/talking over some direct gameplay of this that Austin got to record.

They're doing it over at the Waypoint twitch channel.

I'd say watch it for yourself. The broadcast should be archived and easily watched.

I will offer my impressions, just take with them the knowledge that I am fairly far into the curmudgeon range when it comes to open world games. And... this is an Ubisoft-ass open world game. There's so very much Far Cry DNA in it. Right down to climbing towers to reveal the map, if I caught a part or two correctly. I don't know that I can do those anymore. I haven't finished a Far Cry game since the first one, and the last time I finished an open world game in general was, I think... Red Dead Redemption or Assassin's Creed 2.

Gameplay seems extremely Far Cry Primal at times, particularly whenever human enemies show up. Those parts looked totally milquetoast and boring. Fighting monsters looked like the fun part.

Nitpicky BS: Distractingly bad lip syncing during the in engine Mass Effect style dialog scenes on top of very stilted and flat sounding dialog and a startling lack of detail in facial animations. Naughty Dog this is not. Very self serious. Main character constantly talks to herself, I hadn't noticed it initially but chat pointed it out and Austin said it continues throughout, and kind of chuckled at it. I get the sense it gets repetitive but that's just a guess.

It looks like a beautifully designed game with a bunch of flaws in the actual execution. So like every other Guerilla studios game basically.

I came away from watching actual, basically review code gameplay underwhelmed and disappointed. I kinda wanted this game to sell me a PS4 Pro.

I did watch him hack an animal through it's butt though. So there's that?

I liked what I saw. It does remind me of other open world games I've played; I haven't played anything from the Far Cry series yet, but it reminds me a lot of Shadow of Mordor and Assassin's Creed. I like that the "towers" you climb to get information are actually creatures you need to track and figure out how to get onto, and combat against the animals actually looked pretty interesting. Combat against people looked really pretty bland but not necessarily bad.

If it weren't releasing so close to Zelda and Nier Automata, I'd probably go ahead and get it. As it is, it might get crowded out until the holiday.

Shadow of Mordor was a game I enjoyed immensely. The combat and the traversal were so good. Assassin's Creed wishes to be as finely tuned. If Horizon can channel Mordor levels of movement, and combat options, I could get drawn in.

I'm really interested in this one...but it releases on the day I start some travel, and by the time I return it will be a bit too close to Mass Effect o'clock.

Releasing so close to Zelda when I'm still deep into Final Fantasy XV is keep this in the "wait" category for me. I was kinda hoping Zelda was coming much later this year. Just no room in the schedule when it's looking like most of the year is going to be XV -> Zelda -> Persona 5 -> ? for me.

Eurogamer's review does not inspire much confidence.

Eurogamer wrote:

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a work of considerable finesse and technical bravado, but it falls into the trap of past Guerrilla games in being all too forgettable. For all its skin-deep dynamism it lacks spark; somewhat like the robotic dinosaurs that stalk its arrestingly beautiful open world, this is a mimic that's all dazzle, steel and neon yet can feel like it's operating without a heart of its own.

I'm glad I didn't pre-order. It's one I'll maybe look towards if there's an opening in my rotations, and it's on sale. Immersion seekers who are won over by visuals may get more bang for their buck, much like Killzone.

You might want to look at the other reviews yo.

Eurogamer is my favorite review site but they don't always match up with my tastes (...Resident EVIll).

This review in particular is oddly focused on The Witcher. I think if you start down the path of comparing any game to The Witcher III, you're going to be disappointed.

Yeah, EG is the outlier this time round. Most others have rated it 9-10, with local magazine that's usually spot on giving it a very rare 10/10. I'm trying to avoid reading the review thought, just skimming for the numbers .

Suvanto wrote:

2.5/5 at sister site USGamer, Destructoid gave it a 7.5/10. Polygon's got it at 9.5. There's a big enough spread that I'm glad I'm waiting on this one. I will be interested to see how people respond to it here.

Jeff Gerstmann gave it a 5/5 and his review is fairly glowing.

I'm not sure how to reconcile his usual ability to nail the things I like about games with how I felt about watching the stretches of gameplay I've seen.

Confusing.

The apparent similarities to Shadow of Mordor are interesting because I started playing that game this weekend, and I'm enjoying it immensely.

However, I can't see myself getting round to Horizon: Zero Dawn until Xmas at the earliest. I'm trying to limit the number of full price purchases I make this year (and Red Dead Redemption 2 currently has the 3rd-person-open-world-game slot), and I need to make a bigger dent my Pile.

Interesting that the early reviews are so mixed. As ever, I'll be relying on Edge to tell me what's what...
