Duelyst: CCG Meets Tactical Turn-Based Combat

Trying not to get sucked back into the Hearthstone - I might have to give this a go, see if it'll scratch that itch.

Edit. Cool, available for mac.

This one has its hooks in me! Still playing some Hearthstone but this is taking a lot of time away from it.

I'll look some of you up on there

Duelyst's first pair of single player "Boss Battles" are supposed to go up on Monday, but will only be available for a week. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Also, daily challenges are suspended while they recruit volunteers to design more.

I just started to play it. I tried to make my first custom deck, but there is an exclamation mark on it and I cannot use it. I don't find any information what the minimal requirements for a deck are to get it work (other then there must be a general). Any hints would be appreciated.

The only reason I've ever seen the exclamation mark is when I have less than 40 cards in the deck. If that's not your issue, then I'm stumped.

Have you beaten that faction in practice mode? I think that's how you unlock them

Now that I have 40 cards, it works. Thanks.

I played the first few tutorials yesterday. I can see the appeal. Any sense of what kind of money is required to spend for an enjoyable angle player experience?

The main mode of play is a ladder similar to Hearthstone that starts you at Rank 30. Every month there are folks claiming to hit Ranks 5-10 on new accounts without spending any money, so $0.00 is certainly an option.

If I started over today, I'd probably drop $20 to unlock a full playset of the most recent expansion and go nuts with an Abyssian swarm deck.

Cheers!

Cool. So you can you buy a full deck? Is that what you mean by a full playset?
I'm open to spending $20 or whatever to have a good experience. I spent $200 on Hearthstone a long time ago and the cards I bought became obsolete so quickly.
Can you play this game regularly as a single player?
Any rumors of it coming to IOS?

Thanks,
Chad

  • The "Rise of the Bloodborn" expansion is a small set of about 30 unique cards. $20 unlocks three copies of each card. The biggest drawback is that cards from this set cannot be dusted (similar to how the Hearthstone adventure cards used to work).
  • No pre-constructed decks.
  • Single player content is sparse: A practice mode and now a limited-time Boss Battle
  • A mobile version is targeted for 1Q2017. I'm not sure the devs have announced specific platforms.

It's not a perfect game and it certainly has all the typical Free-to-play trappings, but I've found the gameplay to be pretty satisfying.

Thank you. So, perhaps I buy Eise of the Bloodborn and the $9.99 one time offer for 10 orbs I believe. Sounds like I'd have a good starting point.

Thanks,
Chad

Agreed, a good starting point, great value, and a nice reward to the devs.

Yes! IOS has been announced with Android soon to follow.

While I did eventually spend a bit of money on the game (getting the latest expansion plus the discounted promotional orbs), I played as F2P for a while and it was great.
The nice thing about Duelyst is that even with a basic deck you can climb nicely, as long as you play well. It is much more skill dependent and much less RNG dependent than Hearthstone.
If I lose, it's usually because my opponent outplayed me and not "OMG he got so lucky".

Since the community is much smaller (but super nice!), it is a little harder to net-deck and people at the lower levels are playing budget decks and trying out stuff. So there's no reason for beginners not to have fun.

I've been playing for 4-5 months now and I'm having a blast. Still far from having the full set but I do have a few decks that I feel comfortable with. Reached Diamond (never had the time to push for S-Rank) and even participated in a couple of tournaments.

BTW, the devs & Duelyst community managers are always on Discord during tournaments, super friendly and super helpful. So yeah, highly recommend to try this game out!

Duelyst is getting its Third Expansion, Ancient Bonds next week.

39 new cards with a new mechanic Bond, which is like "Battlecry" from Hearthstone, but will only trigger if you have a minion of the same type on the board already. Seems really nice as it opens up play for neutral cards of Golem and Arcanyst type that didn't see much play until now.

You can get the whole thing (3 copies of each card) for 20 bucks, which is pretty sweet (imagine such pricing in Hearthstone).

I'm looking forward to the new cards. For the most part, it looks like Counterplay is really pushing to boost new archetypes and trying to stay away from improving decks that are already dominant.

Mobile is going to be a game-changer for me, too. The IOS version is in Beta, but no timeline on Android development. It can't come soon enough.

Cannot wait for Android myself.
I remember how huge mobile was for Hearthstone. Hoping for a similar effect for Duelyst.

While the community is very cool, it seems that the player base isn't exactly growing. Mobile should give Duelyst a boost or so I hope.

That's pretty much a direct copy of the Unite mechanic in Ascension

All of the Ancient Bonds cards are now spoiled in preparation for the release tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to trying to build a tribal deck for each faction. The problem I have is that my list of decks is already two pages long and it's a pain to sort through them.

"Not enough deck slots!" ~Hearthstone players
"Too many deck slots!" ~Duelyst players

I got the expansion already but I gotta go to work. Really looking forward to messing around with the new cards later tonight. The first couple of days after an expansion comes out are the best.

Don't get me wrong, I love having a bunch of decks sitting around, but the "previous page" bug on the deck selection screen makes me insane.

I grabbed the expansion over breakfast and got in one game before work. My Magmar golems vs Songai Arcanyst. Can't wait to dig in more tonight.

^ Favorite card so far.
Put 2 copies of it and one Feralu into my Vetruvian deck and I'm just slashing through the ladder.

What works for you?

I underestimated Blood of Air. It's made my vanilla Obelysk deck so much better. Do you mind sharing your list?

All of the new decks have been really fun for me. The Arcanysts can go nuts. I really struggle to manage my hand size with Songhai and Vanar Arcanyst decks.

I thought Juggernauts would be everywhere, but I don't think I've had one played against me yet. I'm winning more than I'm losing with my Dinosaurs deck running Rawr, Chrysalis Burst, and Juggernaut. My last game went:

  • Turn 2: Chrysalis Burst
  • Turn 3: Flash - Juggernaut
  • Turn 4: Chrysalis Burst - Flash - Sunsteel Defender - Young Slithar

My opponent was staring at this on Turn 5:

Spoiler:

Here is my deck.
Lots of room for improvement and changes, of course, but as a Vetruvian 'main' I find it really good at the moment.

Blistering Skorn is a great card in so many situations. Saved me several times vs Chrysalis Burst.
The other 'questionable' choices here are probably Portal Guardian (silence target in the worst case) and Wildfire Ankh (opponent caught off-guard every time, avoid taking damage that is just enough to win the game).

Could use another Stars' Fury, Rasha's Curse (fantastic card!) and I kinda love having Nimbus in my decks.

Nice list. How is Feralu working out for you? It doesn't buff Structures, does it?...Just the Dervishes?

I dusted the only Portal Guardian I opened almost immediately without giving him a fair shake. I wish I'd have at least tried it out.

Here's the Vet pile I've been playing recently. I've abandoned Whisper of the Sands and gone back to the Neutral card draw tools. It seems like every time I have Whisper, I don't have any obelysks. And if I do, the Dervishes spawn in the wrong spot and my blood pressure goes up.

I probably ought to play Skorn in place of an Inner Oasis or two, but I really like to cycle cards. I'd love to squeeze Nosh-Rak back in, too but my curve is already higher than I'd like. So many tough choices....

Anyone get into the iOS beta? If so, any impressions or knowledge of whether pc and iOS will share same account?

Kibler made m start playing this.

Now I can't stop.

Like I didn't have enough games already.

Need an android version now.

Also, how does everyone that I've played against not play Lyonar? They're so awesome.

Turning a 4/4 with Celerity into an 12/5 with celerity and nearly one-shotting the enemy general was disgusting, hilarious, and got me a friend who was surprised he'd not thought to do that with that minion.

I'm not in the beta, but I'm almost certain everything will use the same account. The player base isn't big enough that they can get away with splitting up the community onto different platforms. The PC already has several versions that can all access the same account (Steam, direct download, and a web-based Chrome client).

Up until the newest set released last week, everybody was playing Lyonar. Celerity is pretty sick, especially in Lyonar My rule of thumb: if I can't kill a Celerity dude before my opponents turn, run far away.

Anyway, glad your enjoying the game. Cheers!

I suspect this will go on the backburner for me for at least a month, but I definitely want to give it more time when the Android version releases (allows me then to play on smoke breaks and such).

Demosthenes wrote:

Lyonar is still a top meta deck. The higher you go, the more Lyonar you will see.
They were nerfed though in the last patch (Slo costs 1 more mana, if I'm not mistaken).

Actually I switched to a different Vet deck and it feels much better than the previous one (but to your question - Feralu only affects tribes, so no structures buffs).
The deck is flying vet and it feels very original. The credit goes to someone else, I only modified it a little. I absolutely love playing non meta decks, so people don't know how to counter them.
I think that in the last 10 games, I lost one game. I'm close to Diamond, hope to get it today or tomorrow.

Will share the deck later if you like.
