SallyNasty's Game Club - Fallout 4! Open format for the month of January! Game on!

Carry limits, yeah. Hitting Cortega, after 5 mins I was constantly cycling through gear and dropping stuff. By halfway through clearage I was just picking up ammo and meds, and just left the rest.

I've also started upgrading my power armor, although because it's breakable I've been reluctant to actually take it out and use it.

If you repair it back at the shop, does it not repair the mods good as new too?

One very minor quibble, I play mostly 3rd person... The look of the leather chest piece... I want a chest piece, not a bandolier, it just looks a bit rubbish over the vault suit. Also nothing like when you inspect in inventory. Minor like I say.

@abu - This is my first time playing and yeah some things not obvious at all. I've been picking things up as I go (eg. Not long realised dropping junk in one workbench means available in other workbenches in that settlement)... However I have found this map useful, can add as much detail as you like in the menu... Don't want to use it too much, and I don't add too much detail in the options... but at the same time don't want to be roaming round aimlessly for an age and still miss something.

I very quickly stopped picking up gear unless it was better than what I had. And I've bumped up my STR a few times solely for the increase in the carry limit. And I still end up bumping against the limit regularly because I'm carrying around 50 lbs of junk.

Getting the local leader perk helps a bit. Once you set up supply lines, you can transfer your junk at any connected settlement and it will be available to all settlements in the network.

I think the only one in that top-left section of the map besides Sanctuary and Red Rocket is the Starlight Drive In. Preston will give you a quest to go claim it if you haven't done that already. Should save you at least a little bit of schlepping back to red rocket every time.

By the way, I found this helpful article describing several things that the game doesn't tell you about Very helpful for a noob like me.

Don't worry, there's no spoilers, if you care about that with a game this old.

Came back after a week away from a work trip and I'm bouncing off this again. I just can't get myself to care about it. It doesn't help that one of my quests is messed up. I'm supposed to go talk to Preston. I've stood in front of him mashing A with zero result. Even reloaded the area.

Why do you hate fun?

I really would like to play this, but honestly I've just been playing Overwatch instead.

I've spent too much time talking to clocky.

I may just need a moment. I have strep and I'm grumpy.

It took me awhile to find a gameplay loop that worked for me and kept me interested in playing. "Go anywhere, do anything" just didn't work for me, and neither did the narrative. Like I said before, I ended up falling on crafting as a loop I enjoyed. But yeah, if not for the club to motivate me, I probably would have bounced off, too.

Posted elsewhere, but Mrs. Abu is on vacation and I have the house to myself for the next 10 days (less some time with kids next weekend, and work, obvs.)

I foresee much wandering about the Commonwealth.

I'm starting to wish transmogs were in this game. I keep wanting to wear my Charisma gear while packing a huge gun.

I figured out how to give myself matte black lips so I started another run.

Wow, you did a remarkable job making that look like you. Awesome.

Freya, your character looks like you.

Yeah, that's super cool

argh...now I want to install Fallout 4 again.

Freyja, your character looks rad.

there is a surgeon in Diamond City that will let you change your appearance, if you want to mess around without having to restart/lose progress. I haven't gone to see them yet, though I plan to at some point.

I'm not sure I'm going to keep up with the character journal long term. I like the idea of having a log of my adventures in theory, but actually keeping them up to date I think is actually sapping my motivation to play. Like, not wanting to play unless I'm in the right headspace or whatever.

I'm losing interest in even what I was doing before I decided to write a character journal, basically just marking down places to return to and perks and collectibles and such. I started that because most, but not all of the info I want is listed in game. But I'm thinking that the "most" is enough for me.

I think for the moment, I might just not worry about it so much. Maybe write down stories that I find particularly interesting or funny, but not as in depth as I had been doing. And only mark down places to go back to if it likely to be worthwhile. Like, the bunker at the National Guard Training Center is worth a note, but a random safe in a dungeon I've otherwise cleared maybe isn't.

So now that I am kind of getting into a groove in FO4, I am remembering why I have nearly 200 hours in Skyrim without finishing half of the main questline. I got on last night around 9, 930pm and cleared out the Corvega plant, then did some crafting and settlement upgrades. Next thing I know it was 10 to 1, no wonder I was feeling tired.

The crafting side of things is my bane. In Skyrim I eventually realized that I didn't need to pick up All Of The Things, but I can't seem to not do it here. I am also falling into the time sink of needing to get my starting weapons just right, fully knowing that I will more than likely get much better weapons as time goes on.

All in all I am having fun, so there's that.

I'm only an hour or so past Corvega, but heading south beyond there, the game seems to be opening up a bunch. I can't shut Preston up about side quests all over the show.

I'll have to get round to plugging a USB and transfer some screenshots to post at some point, keeping a wardrobe visual diary of sorts.

Eventually he will ask if you're ready to retake the Castle. He gives you that quest WAAAAY before you can actually complete it, so you won't hear from him in the meantime.

Yeah he's asked about that I think, as well as a fair few side quests all in a row - The castle sounded a bit intense so I did leave it for now. He's my companion at the moment and pretty sure he's continuing to wander around with the come talk to me icon floating about... I think so anyhow, it was late / I was tired.

I've been running hot and cold on this game, only seem to enjoy it every other session. Experienced the down side last night picking off raiders in the rubble of Lexington and wondering what was the point. Also, the rabid ghouls are giving me that slightly nauseating vibe that is the reason I avoid all things zombie-related. I'm sure tonight I'll have a blast clearing out Corvega and picking out some new perks (keep forgetting about those), I just feel like I haven't quite locked on to the fun yet. Right now the prospect of eventually making my way into Boston proper is most of what's keeping me coming back.

So today I setup the Drive In movie place, checked out the Robotics Dumping Ground and USAF Station Olivia, and generally wandered about exploring. Lots of fun, and lots of Junk gathered up.

Spoiler:

Happened to run into the Brotherhood of Steel, quite by accident. Question for the group... I think I read somewhere that you can do quests for multiple factions simultaneously without leaving your current faction. Is this the case? I also seem to remember that at some point there WILL be repercussions for your actions, but the game warns you. Is this also the case?

Does anyone know whether it's worthwhile to arm settlers? No downside to better armor, but for weapons they need ammo, right? And I'm guessing they aren't bright about how they use it.

I'm trying to determine if it's worthwhile to keep dupes of weapons.

If you give them 1 round of whatever ammo is appropriate for their weapon settlers don't expend ammo when they fire, unless they're firing a missile launcher or a Fat Man.

I played about 2 hours last night and spent the entire time building a house / museum for my stuff. Display area for bobbleheads and magazines, racks on the wall for weapons, and a loft upstairs with a bed, a couch and a desk.

2 beds actually, since there aren't queen sized or king sized beds. I assigned Piper to one of them. Can you assign yourself to a bed? I haven't seen an option to do that.

If you have the Season Pass, and are annoyed by the lack of windows, I strongly recommend using the Warehouse Structure set. There is a lot of grubby, run down looking options, but there are also a bunch of clean (and barely broken) full sized windows and skylights and such.

I also started dumping some items into filing cabinets, so they don't clutter up the Misc. section of my inventory. One cabinet for random bits of paper, and another for holotapes. I also plan to build shelves to display the Vault Tec lunch boxes I've found (or maybe just one, as I'm not actually certain whether they have different art.)

ok, that's good to know. I'll have to try that.

Like it. Look forward to dipping into the building stuff later.

I bought all the dlc in the holiday sale. Quick question, when does all that kick it, become available in game?

I think anything related to building items is available as soon as you can build a settlement, with the exception of the Robot Workbench. When you meet Ada, she will give you the blue prints for that. She's in the Automaton DLC, which is the only story DLC I've encountered, and it was pretty early, but also I just stumbled on it, so depending on where you're going you may not hit it. There might be other items behind a quest, but I'm not certain.

GardenNinja, I really like your pad!

I, too, spent a good bit of time today building stuff. First I cleared out the Drive In. I found a little room in the back and set it up as "my" quarters. I then went over to Red Rocket and moved all of the benches to the garage area and built a little deck over the gas pump area. I also put a magazine rack inside and placed all of the magazines I have found so far. Finally, I added a raised porch/deck to the house in Sanctuary where your benches are. If I think of it, I will take some screenshots. Oh, and I put in some garden plots and organized my food stuffs there as well.

This is fun!

I really want to hit level 13 so that I can start getting the second tier of crafting skills. I have a full set of shielded T-45c power armor, a full set of pocketed studded leathers, an assortment of powerful pistols and rifles. I'm ready to make the pie higher.

Don't really think it needs spoiler tagging since there are no specifics, but since you tagged the question I'll do the same with the answer.

Spoiler:

Yes you can do quests for the three main factions up to a certain point. Once you get several missions into any one quest line you'll get a clear "it's us or the highway" sort of message, which makes it time to choose a faction for realz. In my game I got a few snide remarks from my faction for having done quests for a different one earlier on. I don't think that's avoidable though if you actually want to make an informed decision about what faction to choose, and it wasn't a big deal anyway.

Nice. Thanks kergguz.

Yeah, looking back there's no real spoiler in my spoiler tag. I think I had more detail in there, then edited it, then said F it, spoiler that bad boy.

Spoilers are allowed in this thread, gang. Except end state, which we will save for end of month.
