NCAA college football 2016-17: Official thread

Even though the outcome wasn't what you wanted, I am way jealous that you guys got to experience that. While it was a bit slow in the first and second quarters, that was one fine game.

Yeah, last year's game felt more up in the air, but this was a good experience too. (After halftime this year it seemed like we just couldn't catch a break.)

Some of you may have heard this story already today, but apparently Deshaun Watson grew up in a home paid for by Warrick Dunn, former FSU player. Dunn buys homes for single mothers in memory of his own mother. His story is very tragic, but also inspiring.

Props to Mr. Dunn!

Sorry, WoM. Hopefully y'all have enough personal joy right now to not be too disappointed.

So funny that you said that. I told my husband on the drive home that it didn't hurt as much as it would have last year because I couldn't wait to get home to the baby.

Thanks, Abu!

Manta promised me when we got married that we would never miss an Alabama national championship. This happened because we skipped the LSU championship game to save money for our wedding and I cried through the whole game.

We have a lot of fun on our travels.

The road to #17 starts with Florida State in September! You ready?

Time to start the '17 - '18 if it hasn't been started.

Looks like Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator and former Cal assistant Justin Wilcox is set to become our next head coach. The next question is whether he brings on Alabama assistant and other former Cal assistant and player, The Great Traitor Tosh Lupoi.

double post

Stele, what are your thoughts on trading Third and Grantham to Miss. St. for their DC?

Mostly confusion. Do we get draft picks or cash considerations?

Seriously though everyone seems high on Sirmon. And the consensus even from some Miss St fans that have visited our fan sites is that with 5 DCs in 5 years and trying to switch from 4-3 to 3-4 last season's poor defense wasn't all on him.

So... hopeful.

Heck yeah! Making plans now to get down to the game. I have several friends who live in ATL, so housing is pretty much taken care of. Tickets, on the other hand...

Hmm that name sounds so familiar...

Oh yeah that guy.

Nothing against Wilcox ,but I've tried to forget the Derek Dooley era and anything associated with it ever existed.

We are bringing my parents and the baby to the game most likely and will have to scalp tickets to get seats all together. We will likely be offered the opportunity to purchase 2 tickets through Tide Pride. We would be happy to get them and sell them to you at cost. Just let us know!

That's an awesome offer! I think we will probably need three (Me, Mrs. Abu and the eldest Abu Son) and we probably want to sit in the FSU section if possible (I am sure you understand), but I will certainly keep your offer in mind!

Maybe we all can meetup in ATL, that would be cool.

Cal as expected went and hired Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox for HC. Jake Spavital has moved on to West Virginia as their Offensive Coordinator.

Wilcox's first hire was former Eastern Washington Head Coach Beau Baldwin to be OC and we also hired former Oregon OL coach for the same position here. As a defensive guy, Wilcox said he's relying on the offensive staff to do their job. We're still waiting for the Defensive Coordinator. The Great Traitor(?) Tosh Lupoi is probably not in the running so fickle Cal twitterdom can go back to hating him.

With NSD fast approaching we are getting the expected decommits. Oddly enough most of those decommits are coming on the defensive side of the ball (though we flipped a ND DL recruit).

I doubt Wilcox is going to be a quick fix though he has certainly said the right things about being head coach at Berkeley. He emphasized academics and of course the very unique environment that is Berkeley. Is Cal ever going to go to the Rose Bowl? Who knows. I'd still put our win total at +/- 3.5 for 2017 unless our (new) QB shows something amazing during spring practice, but hopefully we start moving in the right direction.

Well, Cal picked its Defensive Coordinator... former Fresno HC Tim DeRuyter?

For the most part Cal fans have been greeting Wilcox's assistant hires with optimism, but this one is causing headscratching. Wilcox is a defensive guy, and maybe HC duties were too much for DeRuyter, so this may work out better than it looks. I guess its not hard to improve on "Worst Defense in FBS" for the last 4 years, but I think we could have done better.

Tim D. was DC at Texas A&M the last time we chanted "Wrecking Crew" (for one game only). It was also Von Miller's final home game.

Tradesies!

DeRuyter's issues weren't coaching, they were recruiting. He tried to pull from the state of Texas, whereas Fresno's strength has always been convincing San Joaquin Valley kids to stay instead of going to LA or the Bay Area. Getting Texas kids to come to Fresno was, shockingly, a tough sell.

Don't look now, but Kansas currently has the #9 ranked recruiting class for 2018. Former Aggie WR coach David Beatty putting in work.
