The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild Catch All

Not much news but here is a screenshot and a couple drawings.

A screenshot of Link against the elements in Breath of the Wild.

Link's very jolly holiday lodge.

and a bit of concept art

That concept art feels about 2 months late. But, I think we saw it back then. Searching says, yes, we did. Was that posted as new today?

No but it was on the same page as the other two images so I included it (and I didn't remember it has been posted already)

Ok. No worries. Still a cool bit of art.

I will buy a Switch just for this game...

What's going on with Zelda: Breath of the Wild's release date?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks like it's back on for a March release, alongside the launch of Nintendo Switch - at least in Japan and North America.
But what about Europe? The situation here is less clear.

Last year, sources close to Nintendo told Eurogamer that Zelda was content complete but "still four-to-six months" from launch and would miss the Nintendo Switch's March release. Since then, things have changed.

At this point, the game was still to go through a lengthy period of quality assurance testing and localisation - necessary due to the game's vast size, scope and sandbox nature, plus the need for Nintendo of Europe to perform its customary translation into multiple languages.

Also key was the desire within Nintendo for the game - first announced for Wii U back in 2013 - to launch in as perfect condition as possible. The lack of Zelda at the Switch's launch could also be mitigated by Nintendo's new 3D Mario, development of which was effectively complete and ready for a March arrival.

So, what changed? Multiple sources close to Nintendo have now told Eurogamer that, at the end of last year, Japan finalised its plans and had a change of heart: Switch needed the strongest possible launch lineup. In short, Zelda will release in March in North America and Japan. Zelda's launch timing in Europe is still unclear.

Nintendo of Europe, which will be impacted most by this change, had previously pushed for as long a period of testing and localisation as could be allowed and had been working to the proposed schedule of a global launch after the Switch itself.

One source tells Eurogamer that Japan had always wanted the game to launch in March, and had been uncomfortable waiting until later. Another source says the decision to move ahead with March regardless of Europe was only finalised by committee at the end of last year.

Vociferous discussions within Nintendo on launch timings are not unprecedented. Last year, a similar conversation between Nintendo of Europe and Japan took place regarding the release of Wii U game Star Fox Zero, which the latter ultimately elected not to delay for further polishing.

Sounds like Eurogamer's source is clearly a Nintendo Europe employee.

You think?

Well, of course, but I meant that the source threw Nintendo proper under the bus over Star Fox Zero.

Oh, gotcha. I suspect that there's a lot of finger-pointing over Star Fox Zero internally at Nintendo.

None of the reports have mentioned systems directly. It seems obvious they mean the Switch version will be out in March but does that mean the Wii U version will as well?

I am thinking I can wait a few months to buy a Switch since I already have a Wii U but I would find the draw of the new Zelda game pretty hard to fight...

Whoever decided to take it from download novelty to full game is who I would start with.

What thread are we in?

From all the different leaks, but mostly from Eurogamer and LKD, I get the feeling they want to launch together.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Star Fox Guard?

Hmm, it does appear I confused Guard and Zero. In my mind they brought a Star Fox project and Project Robot to E3 2014, but they brought Project Guard (Star Fox) and Zero. In my mind Guard and Zero were one and the same from that demo. Digging up articles they definitely had all three.

Project Guard became Star Fox Guard, but Star Fox Zero proper was a full Star Fox game whose use of the gamepad was not entirely awful but always kept the player's attention divided as neither view was particularly useful all on its own.

Right, Star Fox Zero, Star Fox Guard and Project Robot. I had Guard and Zero smashed together in my memory of what Miyamoto showed at E3 way back when.

I have no idea how I possibly got confused about that.

This is one of the best game trailers I've ever seen.

Given that it ends with "You must save her, my daughter", it seems they're giving Zelda or the Zelda lookalike a more prominent role in the story which is great. Did we have confirmation before this that the characters were voiced?

We did, as the E3 trailer opened up with "Open your eyes, wake up Link". It's just we heard them in English then, and Japanese here.

Okay, I remember that now. I didn't know if that was just a trailer thing or a voiced thing. You definitely see characters talking in this trailer. I hope they keep Link silent which is my guess as to what they'll do.

I'm really curious to know what they did with the Wii U gamepad functionality. I sure hope it just isn't a second screen. I suppose I could bust out my pro controller.

I thought I recall seeing it used as a map, but now I'm not certain. If the screen isn't useful I think I'd prefer to use the Pro controller.

After the Switch announcement, I'm wondering how long they held back the release of the WiiU version of Breath of the Wild.

Initially they showed it with map/inventory on the gamepad like WW and TP, but they took that out of all future demos and info, so we may not know until reviews of the Wii U version come out.

Master Edition. I don't know if it's sold out on Amazon or if preordering hasn't started yet.

That looks pretty nice, but I am going to resist.

Oh, that is nice. Damn.

Is there a Wii U version of that?

I'm really surprised they didn't make an edition with a golden Joycon.

That's a nice looking set of goodies.

On Treehouse right now
