GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

The list command isn't really working right. The syntax "list=1" doesn't make numbers, it makes bullets, and that's the code that's created by the list button on the edit window, even if you tell it you want numbers.

Getting a numbered list requires a "list=ol" code instead.

Here's an example of trying to use the list=1 command:

  • This is the first entry.
  • This is the second.

Here's the same thing with list=ol:

  1. This is the first entry.
  2. This is the second.

could we have a master "show all spoilers" per page or per thread?

That's such a good idea that I went ahead and started work on implementing it as a userscript (see link in sig). This 1.0 version just gives you a button at the top to toggle all the spoilers at once in a single place, but doesn't remember anything about what is toggled. Did I interpret correctly or were you imagining a feature that would let you always have spoilers expanded by default on certain threads?

I'm experiencing a bit of weirdness with the mark last read function.

I just started watching Westworld, and am reading along with the thread. We just finished watching episode 3, so I marked this post as "last post read".

But when I go back to the link in Everything Else, the "new" link points to a different spot in the thread, on a completely different page, here. (This post in particular).

The behavior's repeatable, and happens if I try to mark the last post as anything longer ago than a month.

And I just tested using the Post a Picture thread, which gets almost daily use; the furthest back you can move the "last read" bookmark is a month. By design?

I'm pretty sure that's by design. If you just leave a thread alone long enough the number of new posts always seems to stabilize around the the last month's worth of posts rather than just climbing forever.

Might potentially be to save database space. If each thread has a separate bookmark for every person who's ever read it, it'll just keep accumulating crap forever. By aging old bookmarks out after thirty days, threads will peak out in storage use, and then gradually shrink down to some minimum amount.

(It's probably some separate bookmarks table, where the maintenance process just removes everything 31 days and older.)

A friend tried to recover his account, but had to do the steps 3 times to get a link to reset his password.

Another friend is trying to subscribe to the forum as wel speak. No emails received.

Is there issues to subscrib to the site ?

Edit : and I just check my settings. I'm not receiving email notifications when I receive a private message.

either way works, as long as it's clearly visible what was originally marked as a spoiler. The idea came from catching up with a TV show thread I had stayed away from until I made the time to see aired episodes.

Two separate posts for two separate topics; it's been quite a few months since I've tried posting from any of my Android devices (Sony Xperia Z5, Z4, Z3 and lately, Galaxy S7. Typing into the new comment field slows down my keyboard down to a crawl.

Am I the only one going through this?
I'm browsing using latest Chrome.

Oh, so that's not just me. Figured that was an issue with my phone or keyboard app (SwiftKey).

Everything seems to run pretty well for me while typing in the forum comment box from my aging Nexus 7 tablet with the default android keyboard in chrome. Hobbes, are you using SwiftKey or some other third party keyboard like garion?

In my Recent Comment view, it seems that a few topics I've read recently are being re-flagged as having New Comments even though no new posts have been added since I read them last.

I suspect it might be from Edits changing the post date, as I've found at least one post (https://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/...) that's got the date set as "Yesterday" (the 12th) even though it appears above a post with the date of the 11th.

I just went back and tested this, and I believe this is the cause - notice the date of this post (https://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/...) has changed to Today at 10:45am.

Look a few posts above yours, Alz.

Still no email to my friend's email address.

She is using a @live.ca address, could there be an issue with that address?

And still received no notification of PM here as well. With Xmas coming, I just hope I can send keys thru PM again.

My bank's website signs me out less than GWJ does. Can we up the automatic sign-out thing to something like every 300 days or something? Getting real sick of having to log in so much, especially on a site where such security is superfluous.

+1 it's fine on my phone with fingerprint login on LastPass, but a bit of an unnecessary hassle on my tablet.

Kind of surprised, how often are you signing in? On my work and home comps (and mobile) it feels like once a month maybe but I don't know for sure.

For me it auto-logs me out (via the mobile site, as that is how I do most of my browsing) once a week.

I'll try to remember to mark the time passed on my devices.

I'm probably at about once a week as well.

I tried using Google's Gboard. While not as good as Swiftkey, it has some pretty good word predicting.
I can also confirm that the slow down I reported earlier goes away with Gboard. I'll try other keyboards later.

Huh, I switched to the built in keyboard on my phone and I'm still having the same slowdown issues.

Maybe I'll give Swype a go.

Edit: Weirdly enough Swype does fix the issue, but my phone's generic keyboard has slowdown. Apparently SwiftKey knows there's some weird slowdown with their app.

Can thread titles have some validation on word length put around them please? Threads with very long single 'words' like this one cause the mobile formatting to break because it does not automatically wrap the word. Since the word is so long it pushes the post/new post counts off the side of the page on iOS and makes it hard to see and click on the new posts link.

The example thread is a 20 character 'word' ("Drawing/Sketching/Digital"). Maybe 15 characters would be safe? There is another recent thread in the Games section that causes the same problem.

Also, can someone with mod powers please edit that thread title to put spaces to fix the problem? I have already posted in the thread and PMed the original starter a while ago, with no response.

EDIT: This thread and this one from Games and Platforms both cause the same problem as well. They have 21 and 23 character strings without a space.

Sweet jeebus yes. I know whenever that thread gets onto the first page because LastPass goes all screwy on me.

I PMed the OP of that thread once before asking them to throw in a space somewhere but got no reply.

I'm finding if I preview a post, when I then go to hit Post after looking at the preview I get a 500 Server error. I have to use the back button and post from the previous page. This is when I edit the main post on a pile of shame thread or try to change the hero banner.

I'm not getting PM notification e-mails. First noticed it a few months back, but forgot about it for a while, but I've gotten some PMs in the last few days with no e-mail. Nothing in my spam folders.

Yeah, I'm not getting them either.

There are two values that determine session lifetime on the site:

1. The session garbage collection is set at seven days. This means that an unused session (no browsing activity at all) will be cleaned up after seven days.

2. Cookie lifetime is set at 28 days, or four weeks. This means that, regardless of activity, cookies will expire after 28 days, requiring you to login again.

I had brought this issue up 1-2 weeks ago, just before the steam sale.

No reply so far.

And you are not able to recover your account if you lose your password, or register on the forum.

Finally figured out how to use the articles\podcast\forums\more drop down menus on Android. If I long tap it doesn't automatically load into the link. The drop down drops and the copy/paste popup pops. Tapping away from the popup does not make the drop down go away. I can finally search on mobile... Sort of. The search results page does not format correctly and the results are shifted partially off screen. It's better than nothing, though.

That's what I used to do, but ended up bookmarking the Search page. Much easier.
