Harry Potter Catch All

We don't seem to have a thread to collect all the Harry Potter stuff and with the new movie coming out I thought - gee I will make a thread about the movie .... then I read this

J.K. Rowling Says The ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Series Will Probably Be Five Movies

and realized maybe a catch all would be better!

I am happy she is going to keep expanding the universe. I kind of wish she would have gone the Star Trek route of allowing many different authors to do official stories but she seem to like having full control over the franchise and she seems be managing it well.

Thanks for making this!

Our house becomes an HP movie fest each fall as the weather turns.

Ours too! I just bought all the blu-rays tonight.

Same here. Just something about those movies and the autumn/holiday seasons.

It's funny, but from what I can see of the trailers of Fantastic Beasts the best thing she did to make this interesting was to remove Harry Potter from the equation.

How was there not a thread for this already?!

J.K. Rowling has recently started publishing short writings at Pottermore on the backstory to Fantastic Beasts. The first is called The Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA)

I really hope she finds some way to fix her portrayal of native American mythologies.

How is this thread not called Harry Potter Golden Snitch-All?

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle continues to be enjoyed at the Gravey household. I've read the first three books way back when, and seen most of the films though DH1 made zero sense to me—by that point the movies felt less like adaptations and more like visual companions for those who'd already read the books.

So all the board gaming has got me thinking I should probably read the series, and we only have some of them. But man is it hard to find a decent-looking edition. What happened to the old adult edition? Not this new set, I think it was this set. That one liked nice.

I plan on buying the new illustrated books as they come out.

Yeah, I looked at those. I think the first two or three are out? But, scrolling up, I don't think I'm as invested as you to drop that much on each volume. But they could also work as Christmas presents since Mrs. Gravey (the real HP fan in the house) wishes she had grabbed that original adult edition. I'll walk up to the Amazon showroom on my lunch break and see if I can't check out what's available.

I got the first two illustrated books in the special collectors editions straight from Amazon UK. They cost a fortune but they are super nice. I hope by the time my daughter is old enough they will all be out and we can start reading them together

Just in time for the holidays

Harry Potter House Comforters

Why the heck can't I get this in a physical format? Darn electronical books monopolizing the best cover art.

Boo, I thought those were coming out on print versions. That's bummer, I was planning on getting them.

There a thread for the new film?

Beats me but I saw it last night so I figure why not post here.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought they did a great job of creating a spin off area but keeping it in the same "universe" Looking back there are quite a few scenes that could have been trimmed and the CGI was almost at Star Wars prequel levels but it was still a lot of fun.

Yeah wife and I enjoyed it, but it was a little long and we thought would be better in book form. (I have not read the book.)

I complained about the length of the books years ago and my wife pointed out that fans of Harry Potter more. More of the world, more of the characters, more of the history, more of anything and everything about it.

In that sense I think the movie did a great job. There were scenes that could be cut because they didn't really matter, or what they were talking about was explained in other ways but fans just want more.

Personally, I wanted much more of the world-building and explanations of things in the wizarding world and much less of the parts that dragged down the seventh book...

The actual book is not really a story it is more a list of some of the beasts that are found in the Harry Potter universe.

I'm 90% certain that Fantastic Beasts was originally a script for a Matt Smith-era double episode of Doctor Who that someone just reworked to fit in the Potterverse.

Yep - originally it was just the title of one of Harry's first-year textbooks, but Rowling wrote the existing book as a flavor project.

That's what I thought... I had someone make me doubt that after talking about the movie though.

Saw it yesterday and loved it. Obviously it's a completely different thing. I would have liked more world building as well. But overall I was pleased to have this world back in my life during the holidays.

Nice thread. Just started rereading the series again this week.

Still need the movies, but I really wanted a blu-ray set with all the extended versions. From what I could tell on Amazon the other day, only the first 3 movies had extended versions?

I discovered Bloomsbury's Signature edition from 2011 on Amazon, so I closed my eyes and spent CA$155 on a used hardcover box set. It's probably not going to arrive in time for Christmas, but the dust jackets look way classier than any other cover I've seen.

I finally caught Fantastic Beasts. It felt like a Harry Potter movie, but unfortunately I mean that in the sense that it felt like there was a 900 page books that got shredded to fit into a 2+ hour movie--pages and pages where Goldstein seems to have any sort of relationship with the creepy kid, and people discover Colin Farrell was evil. There were reveals that didn't feel like reveals, just things that lessened my confusion, or that revealed things I didn't realize were mysteries.

The Gindelwald bit at the end was so f*cking pointless, I almost admire it.

I didn't feel that way about the ending. Sets up the villain for the next film, no?

It might not have been well done, but I wouldn't call it pointless.

Spoiler:

I didn't realize til I read an article on the Ringer that the big reveal there isn't HEY Grindelwald! so much as HEY WE GOT DEPP! cuz I didn't recognize Depp.
