Grey is a very smart individual, but comparing the electoral college to the popular vote is invalid. The electoral college is designed to prevent the tyranny of the majority. The problem is that most states have a winner-takes-all rule for allocating electors, so the thing feeding the thing that guards against majority rule is itself a victim of majority rule.
I was halfway through an explanation of why I think the EC isn't actually a bad idea. Then realised that some well meaning rationality may not be suitable right now.
