Red Dead Redemption Catch-all

Hm. Sony announced the original RDR is coming to PS Now. So I guess any hope of a remaster/rerelease is dead. XB1 backwards compat, or PS Now are the only choices it seems.

On the plus side, PS Now is on PC, so you can play it there.

Yeah. I just can't bring myself to buy into the concept of renting streamable games for a monthly fee. Old PS3 games at that.

I'm looking at the PS Now page, and one of the things it says is required is a Dualshock 4 controller. Is that really required, or is there a workaround so that I can use the Xbox controller that I already own?

PS Now has a 7-day free trial, so if I'd definitely use that to play RDR on my PC if the service doesn't force me to buy a $50 controller.

Don't know. There's someone out there who claims they got it to work. I'd sign up for the trial and see for yourself. Motion controls would require the DualShock.

Except, of course, it's not on the available game list.

I'm actually intrigued. I never did take to console gaming. Mostly because it was always a pain to get set up for it. Unlike many, I'm geared up to play on my PC in my computer space and moving to the living room and setting it all up was always too high a barrier. So being able to go back and play some of the PS3 exclusives I enjoyed (Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted) on my PC is actually interesting. I'm going to did out a USB controller and give the 7 day trial a go. Once the Civ VI, Stellaris, and Total Warhammer claws loosen a little... Seriously, 3 strategy game updates/releases on the same day??

Sounds like there's no date yet other than "coming soon."

I Googled and found this video with a guy installing PS Now and successfully playing God of War 2 with his Xbox 360 wired controller, which is what I have. The PS Now software noticed that he's not using a Dualshock controller, but all that happened was it displayed a message about Dualshock being "the best experience" or whatever.

The announcement of RDR2 made me think that maybe I'd give the first one another shot. I got bored somewhere around Mexico when it first came out, and got rid of it.

Checked prices of the GOTY version, and it seems like the Xbone backwards compatibility jacked the used prices up for $20-30 for the 360 version. Well, guess I won't be trying that.

Either the prices will come back down, or they'll get around to releasing it on PC, I guess.

Odd, I picked up the GOTY version yesterday - new - for the local equivalent of US $20. Of course the digital download version on Xbox.com is twice that price, with no resale potential.

Some random thoughts a few hours in:

This is a good game.

At first I thought there was a problem with the graphics, then I noticed the 360 was on 1080i output. With that sorted out it looks fantastic.

There was one explanation of the shooting / slow time thing which I have already forgotten.
There was one explanation of the cover system which I have mostly forgotten.
As a result of these I've seen the "dead" screen frequently - most often in random encounters where I'm supposed to be helping someone.

I lost honour by shooting someone random who shot me first.

The first "stranger" mission involved riding to a spot in the wilderness to look for someone and only finding some remains. This happened twice, but the location and remains were exactly the same. Hopefully this improves.

The main story has been great so far. Except for the cattle herding (wherein the cows just went where they were going, I followed and everyone said I was good at it)

Yeah I remember the "tutorials" being.. less than stellar. The bullet time thing is fairly essential so don't be afraid to look up how to do it properly. There are a few upgrades to it as well that change how it works, though I don't recall the details.

Well, I've now learned how not to get shot at by random strangers (don't aim a gun at them!). There was another shooting tutorial so I have that mostly sorted now, although I ran across someone calling for help, stopped to help - but when I finished shooting everyone was dead, including the one I was supposed to rescue. Oops.

Enjoying the story and atmosphere a lot.

Finished the game last night.

Excellent overall, although during the final part I was ready for it to be over before the end. Part of that was due to not wanting to find out what terrible final event would happen and almost daring to hope that it would turn out OK...

I almost missed the final final stranger mission, don't know why that wasn't considered a story mission.

Now - what's this "undead nightmare" all about? Worth looking at or quit while I'm ahead? I'm not usually big on DLC unless it's very well constructed and/or directly builds on to the main game/story. This feels like it might not be those things.

I had a blast playing Undead Nightmare, which was easy since I loved RDR. It's well-constructed but doesn't build upon the story of RDR; it's a different story. The premise is that you, as John Marston, are trying find a cure for the plague that has spread across the frontier. There is lots of zombie-shooting, which wasn't yet done to death in 2010, but if you're totally uninterested in anything related to zombies, you can safely skip Undead Nightmare.

Undead Nightmare is a fun, humorous return to a RDR filled with zombies. However, the gameplay is pretty dang one-note. I spent most of the time on rooftops shooting at zombies, as being on their level was instant death.

Dealing with zombies at ground level is no problem. As Moe from DGR sang on one of the songs from their ZomBOOsical album (next to last song), you gotta "Aim For The Brain, Baby".

Also, there is a button (or button combo) that you can push when at point blank range that puts your gun under the chin of the zombie and blows its head off. You don't even have to aim. I used this technique a LOT. You can see it demostrated on the zombie wearing a dress in this video at 3:22, right after the place where I have the link cued to play.

I loved 'Undead Nightmare'. This was in large part because it was such an unexpected and surprising piece of DLC. At the time no one was releasing as DLC what was effectively an entire new game (certainly not on consoles). It tended to be a map and a mode here or a set of additional missions there.

If you can pick it up for a handful of £s/$s, then I'd say definitely give it a whirl.

Don't you get it with the base game these days? I'm sure I did when I bought it from Live?

Okay with the advent of HBO's Westworld I really want to do a new play through. Guess I'll be dusting off the PS3 soon to dive back in.

I went back to it last night after a short break. I'm still really enjoying it, but starting to feel the drag that people talk about once you've spent some time in Mexico.

I got back into RDR heavily after the XB1X update and just wrapped up Mexico over the weekend.

Three thoughts:
- This game is very influential in retrospect. With the resolution and performance boost, it plays almost like a 'modern' game and many ideas from RDR still echo in the likes of 2018 God of War, Ubi Open Worlds, etc. etc. I'm not so sure anyone has done many of these individual parts as well as R* did and almost no one has brought them together into a cohesive whole.
- RDR is right behind The Witcher III in my best games of all time list
- I will probably plow through the DLC and maybe even play some of the multiplayer to keep a head of steam for RDR2.

I almost wish I had an XB1X for this. Almost.

I pretty much just bought an XB1X for this. One of my top 10 games of all time, looking forward to visiting it again.

I bounced off RDR twice. I love the setting, the art, and the music. I feel like the sparse nature of the old west towns works better than the usual Rockstar setting where you can go into 1 of every 20 buildings. And yet... I just hate Rockstar's writing so much that I'm completely unable to get more than 10 hours in or so.

bill, I'mma let you finish, but Red Dead is one of the best written video games of ALL TIME!

True. I hate the writing in just about every GTA cutscene but by the end of RDR they had me feeling all the feels. I walked away from the ending of that game feeling like I'd just experienced something special. It's been very, very rare that I've had any kind of reaction like that to a video game.

True, except for the entire act in Mexico.

I like the Mexico story. The story is appropriately bleak but there are no surprises really.

Like all Rockstar stories, it's a caricature but when your source for such things is Sergio Leone and Cormac McCarthy, even a predictable story is interesting.
