PlayStation VR Catch-All

Yeah I dunno, it might be a thousand to one chance, it's not just like a light scratch, it's like there was some microparticle caught between the two lenses and was jostled a little and made a mini crater on each. And I've had these glasses like a year and a half and not a single tiny scratch. At least they are covered by insurance, but damn it sucks to have a fun new toy and then have it taken away!

Here in the UK I use an online shop called selectspecs.com. I think my last pair cost £12 - frames and lenses. If there isn't an equivalent shop in the US, might be cheaper to order here and have them shipped over. The weaker pound works in your favour too.

I know how that type of thing feels. I got a little particle of something on the end of my stylus and put a little scratch in a N3DS within a week or two of having it. I ordered a replacement screen but haven't bothered to replace it yet but probably will eventually.

That sucks AcidCat! Sorry to hear it.

For what it's worth, the Core Bundle seems to be available for quick delivery from Amazon. The Launch Bundle does indeed seem to be OOS through next week.

My only VR tonight was Rigs, and it did not go well. Nausea settled in pretty quickly during the tutorial. I hung on until the training was over, but then was done for the night. Still have a headache 2 hours later.

BLargh.

My flatmate trying out Kitchen with his PSVR, good scares are at 2:08 and 3:40:

So Super Stardust made me sick in 10 minutes. Total bummer, because otherwise I thought it was really cool.

Can anyone share their experience with playing regular PS4 games with the headset ?

Are they playable with the virtual screen or do people mostly switch back to TV for this purpose?

They're playable--I played Hatsune Miku and it seemed fine. It's just like having a monitor right up on your face. Honestly though I couldn't see playing regular games for extended periods of time with that set up. It's easy enough to just take the headset off and play that way since the PS4 is already displaying there anyway.

Everything I've tried to play with the headset that wasn't designed for VR was a bad experience. There's a lot of camera tricks and effects that standard games do that don't sit well with my brain and stomach when viewed in VR.

This was my experience as well. I'd held off on games like Among the Sleep thinking they'd be a fantastic VR experience. And with some tweeks they still could be, I am sure. But there is something about them that just makes it difficult to deal with. I thought maybe it was just the first-person thing, and gave the remastered Batman a shot. It wasn't as stomach-upsetting. But it also wasn't great...outside of it being on a ridiculously large screen. Its like the immersion is just too much if the developers didn't put the time into adjusting things for VR.

Now, what IS really entertaining is watching movies or Netflix on the thing. Its super fun to watch an episode of Black Mirror on your own personal IMAX size screen.

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to video resolution so the cinema mode is a little disappointing. I might use it if I want to play or watch something while my wife is watching the main TV but apart from that I don't think I'll use it much. I also like to lean back on the couch when I'm playing or watching and the headset doesn't really accommodate getting very comfortable.

All that being said though, it's a cool idea that will hopefully get better in future versions of the hardware.

Robots Rescue on the Playroom VR is a lot of fun. I think Sony could have their version of Mario or Sonic based on the little robot one controls. I've made a video of my playthrough, but I'd encourage people to play it themselves rather than watch me. The only thing I'd tweak about it is the movement; the camera moves independently, which can feel a little skwiffy.

I've tried Netflix just to see what it's like and it's definitely usable, unlike most games, but I'm mostly with malking, The downsides of comfort (not to mention the large, warm headset) and lower resolution make it not all that great of an experience. I'd probably prefer an iPad and headphones if I was trying to share the room/TV with my wife.

I guess for me the TLDR is that PSVR is great for things designed for VR and not worth it for anything that wasn't.

The resolution isn't any better, but I recommended giving the Hulu VR update a try. They place you in your choice of fun screening rooms, from a swanky apartment to the beach, and put a giant 50 screen in front of you.

Is that a separate app or just a feature inside standard Hulu?

As long as you have the updated Hulu app(standard), you'll be given the choice when you launch whether you want regular Hulu or Hulu VR.

I liked the Hulu VR piece, and had just an okay experience with the actual VR selections that were offered. It may have been a internet speed issue, but it was very blurry. I think it may just be learning curve stuff for Hulu though. Really cool to have that as new content though.

Yeah, the actual VR content in the new Hulu app is pretty bad. I could see myself watching some regular programming in the screen room mode though.

I played some more Superhypercube today. Couldn't beat my high score. Still, I'm not all that motivated since I top my friend's list. *extends arms with entwined hands and stretches fingers while making a satisfied exhale*

I know it can't be that hard to beat that score, so hop to it. Just don't get too far past it because I don't want to get discouraged.

I finished up the third part of Rez. WOW. That was a rad level and boss. I forgot about the overdrive thing the first run through and died. The second run was easy since I used overdrive on the boss.

*checks PSN to see what VR games are available*

*Sees Catlateral Damage*

Must not buy because I know the novelty will wear off but I really want toooooooo!!!

I've ordered a Pro. One of the devs of a PSVR title called Kismet said they could (will) make the game look better with the Pro - I think digital foundry said there is some aspect to the console that appears to be vr specific. Also, the dev hhoped it would be able to improve tracking. Is that what the 30% boost in cpu could partially be used for?

I don't see how that would help, honestly.

I watched/experienced Allumette. Why has nobody been raving about that!?! It's amazing. It's just a wonderful short based on the Matchstick Girl. There are so many good things about it that just blew my mind. How is it free, as well? I was waiting for a microtransaction to pop up at any time.

Of course, the main thing that it made me realize is that VR solves the problem film has been trying to figure out for years. VR can do theater. That's... just... I never expected that.

How long is it? I definitely started it up on Monday. But around that time I hit VR fatigue and quit. I will give it another shot though. It looked gorgeous.

It's about 20 minutes.

I was just playing this tonight . As a cat person, there is a real thrill when you see and play with your cat paws for the very first time. So far, Catlateral Damage has been the only game that's threatened the things near my chair in my living room. It's easy to forget yourself when you're swatting a sock off a dresser. The game is also great to play with others around because the view on the tv doesn't match that of the headset and the non-cats work well as spotters of areas ripe with junk for the cat to bat onto the floor. My friend and I made a pretty good team (though we may have smacked each other in the legs a few times ) and cleared 3 levels before calling it a night.

I also played Bound for the first time in VR (and the first time period) tonight. It is a GORGEOUS game in VR and I strongly recommend experiencing it with the headset. The environment is so cool to watch, the walls never get in the way (in fact the walls break away from the camera I interesting ways), and the antagonist achieves a sense of scale that is so much more impressive when you have to move your head to see the whole of it. Bound is a delightful and beautiful game. However, I did find having to change camera placement constantly a slight annoyance, but an annoyance I've happily been able to overlook thus far.

Yeah, so you see that score that I have on the leaderboard. That is the best I can do even after a week of trying. This game has taught my that my spatial reasoning is sooo much worse than I thought. I've always been bad when trying those "what object is made when you fold up this 2D thing" questions, but this game just drives that home.

I still love it, though.

Has anybody tried out Sports Bar VR? The idea of hanging out in VR playing darts and pool sounds really appealing to me. Not sure how'd I drink my beer though.

Yeah, sippin on a beer with the headset on doesn't really work. On the plus side, you can always take a break every 10-15 minutes to have a few sips of beer and check the internet briefly, I've found. It's probably good for your eyes to take a break anyways.
