A place to discuss issues surrounding racism, classism and privilege.
Only the most luxurious, most classy, most exclusive ruins.
I'm hoping that Paleocon has made progress on the Goodjer commune.

Good grief, no. A guiding principle for me is "Do the least necessary to achieve the result, when tinkering with complicated systems". If it can be done by re-educating families (in the media, say, or in churches) that's cool. If not, do it in the schooling process.
That latter idea is the one that's usually put in place, and it's primarily what has prompted social conservatives to start their own schools and oppose public (secular) schooling entirely. Opposition to changing fearful, hateful and biased thinking is already entrenched in the system, thanks to religious beliefs we'd quickly label extremist if they weren't held by American Christians in massive numbers.
Yeah, I took your comment as "It'd mean moving mountains." Your intended meaning is a much more manageable molehill.
Sorry for the confusion, I pay too much attention to details sometimes and imagine everyone else is looking at them the same way. The conversation had already involved early education as useful for this, and I'd discussed how conservatives resisted that, so I thought the context was established - change the family by changing the education of the child.

Sorry for the derail, but what movie is that?

And, lucky for all of us, Tuesday is Soylent Green day.

Yes, as it has already been pointed out, it's Soylent Green. While the lulz-factor usually focuses on "SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE", it's a pretty grim commentary on wealth inequality and class, which I think is pretty relevant if a Trump presidency becomes a reality.

The original novella Make Room, Make Room is also pretty choice.
Lol thx guys. I just realized I have never seen the movie despite obviously knowing the ending. I'll need to remedy that.
This could go in a lot of recent threads, but this excerpt from 13th hits hard.

Well, I know what I'm watching tonight, probably while crying myself to sleep... but definitely looks like it's worth a watch.

Texted my gf about this, so we'll be watching it this weekend.
There are no words. The mug shot is priceless, though. "Who, me? How dare you?"
This all came about because someone had more than 20 items on the express lane.
This all came about because Trump made overt racism acceptable again.
Twenty items can hardly be called "express lane" to begin with

It is compared to the people who get in front of you with two cartloads of stuff in every other lane. I'd take my 21 items to the express lane too and feel no guilt about it.

Deplorable.
Students expelled after Facebook group calls for 'execution' of Jews, black people glad they were expelled but what the f*ck?
To be fair, if this ShopRite location is like the myriad others I've been to, there are other express lines for fewer than 10 items.
Guy gets racist over a sarcasm quotes express lane that allows a decidedly non-express number of items (sorry, bek, that may be comparatively express, but it still rings hollow. 15 is the max on express) when there are also right and proper express lanes. Every time ya think "Well, this is the most pathetic story of racism possible," they find a new depth.

The alt-right. Bunch of charmers.

The express lane where I shop is 20 items, so my example was having only 1 item over. I agree that if you have seven or ten items over the stated limit, that's too much leeway. It's still no excuse for someone getting racist and hostile over though.
I typically do self checkout nowadays and avoid the entire issue. There's almost never any lines there!
The supermarket in our neighborhood had to post signs making it clear that express lanes could be used by people with a few more items than the stated number (which has varied over time), or even by full cart shoppers if the lane is needed for overflow. People were getting stroppy over one item.
But still, signs...

Expelled seems like a small punishment. That much hatred should carry some sort of criminal charges.

Incitement to violence isn't protected by the first amendment though. The cops said they found no evidence or documentation of them posing a credible threat themselves (though I wonder how much the fact that they were white prep-school kids factored into that determination), they were advocating for others to do violence.
