City-building Game Catch All

Wait, Life is Feudal is a city builder? From the steam page I thought it was a first person survival game?

Yeah that's what I thought as well

Nothing to see here, move along.

Okay, so Banished, only a bit prettier and a bit more involved.

I'd love to have a look once it's finished. Not a fan of early access. Especially since it looks like the first Life is Feudal game kinda petered out and they (thankfully) gave up on the idea of an MMO.

From reading the description, it looks like a Banished clone with a couple of minor tweaks, such as the ability to take control of any villager in first-person view. Reading the user reviews confirms as much, as well as warning of crashes. But it's an Early Access game (which I don't buy), so maybe the finished game will have those issues fixed.

No harm in putting it on my wishlist to remind me to check on the game in the future.

Yeah, I'm just dropping any I come across, not embellishing them in any way

Life is Feudal: Your Own is a First Person Survival. I'm guessing Life is Feudal: Forest Village is set in the same Universe or something.

I'll steer clear of it in Early Access, but I'm definitely interested. If it's a lot like Banished but with a little more meat on its bones I'll want to play it. I really liked Banished, but there was so little challenge in it that it didn't have much for legs.

Speaking of that, I was hopeful that Banished mods would give it some more legs, but I put dozens of hours into the game and left before modding was fully up. Has anyone played more recently and tried out any mods?

The only mod I've used is various versions of the Colonial Charter series.

If you want more stuff all you need is the Colonial Charter mod. It adds about four-fold the amount of buildings and professions. You can make some quite elegant cities with it.

That sounds intriguing. Does it add challenge or just lengthen the production chains and add some new ones? It's cool to be able to add a basket weaver to my town to make it look really nifty, but if my citizens don't suffer without baskets it doesn't really change much...

The latter.

That's too bad. More buildings and professions are cool and they'll help you make a prettier, more varied town, but they won't make the gameplay much more satisfying for me beyond a few extra hours. Maybe this Life is Feudal: Forest Town thing will scratch the itch that Banished could never quite reach. I won't know for a while though, as my pile is too big to be buying Early Access games.

I was just thinking of buying Factorio...then thought better of it and rather than spending $20, play something from my pile and Anno 2070 came to mind. Never really put Factorio and Anno together but it fit the bill nicely! I almost forgot how much I love the Anno series and how little I've actually played of 2070.

Very relaxing. Takes your mind off things and can focus on silly fun things like detailed supply chains and people complaining about the lack of sushi!

Factorio, by the way, is excellent. You could do a lot worse with $20.

I find the Anno games a bit too formulaic - build x houses around the community center, build building A to keep them happy, build x farms to get them food, etc. The pre 2205 Annos at least make it a bit more interesting by needing to protect trade routes and protect yourself from attack.

I've only played the Factorio demo but I liked what I saw and just bought the game. To me it seems like it will require a bit more thought, hopefully I'm not mistaken.

Don't get me wrong...I WILL be purchasing it. Just thought since I have a pile of mostly unplayed/underplayed games, I should play them first (not to mention, I've overspent my gaming (board/video) budget the last two months ) and Anno seemed like it would scratch a similar itch.

They definitely are formulaic, but I view them as a zen-gardening-style game...veg out and grow some rice and basalt extractors. If I want to think, I'll launch a Paradox game.

Didn't realize there was a demo! Guess I'll be giving that a go this week sometime. (I'll end spending that $20 sooner than I think). Let us know how your experience goes now that you've purchased it.

Completely agree with you. I actually enjoy the combat being separated out from the main game, and while I miss some of the supply chain complexity of the earlier Anno games, overall, I really enjoyed my time with it. I should really go back and play with the expansion / DLC content.

From the video I thought it was another Banished mod...

So, I'm not sure if this counts but I recently picked up Project Highrise, which I saw at PAX West, and am pleasantly surprised so far. It seems to be a worthy successor to SimTower, though I can already notice the grind of progression setting in. Has anyone tried this guy?

Moved my comment to the Factorio thread.

I picked it up when it came out. It was fun for a couple of hours, but it didn't quite have the depth to keep me engaged.

I have to say that building things in SpaceChem felt more rewarding. SpaceChem can get pretty complex without bombarding the player with 20 things to build and mine just to get some things done.

SpaceChem?! Oh, man. Look at that. I do have that in my library...unplayed. Hmph. Should definitely try that.

Well, regardless of my pile, I went ahead and purchased Factorio this afternoon. Realized I had a 10% off from Humble Monthly. That $2 discount pushed me over the edge...well, that and Arumba's Twitch stream today. Knew it would happen sooner than later. Less than an hour and I'm already hooked.

EDIT: A Factorio thread... Guess I'll be movin' future Factorio comments on over there now. (Thx for the heads-up, robc)

EDIT: Nevermind. 75% off Cities: Skylines was too good to turn down.

So I just noticed Cities: Skylines (the deluxe version) was $9.99 on Steam this weekend. I'm wagering that it's worth plunking down the cash for a fun city-building game?

Was that a rhetorical question? Is this a rhetorical question?

At that price you simply can't go wrong.

Edit: I just realised you also came to the same conclusion!

As I said, too good to turn down.

Can anyone reccommend a good tutorial for absolute beginners? I found a few on YouTube but I'm just wondering if any particular one is better than the others for a beginner who hasn't played a city builder since Sim City 4.

I never used tutorials, I think the best thing is to just make a city that pleases you aesthetically and see what problems crop up (there will be problems!). That's probably a better way to learn the basics than any YouTube video, as most of them seem to assume a basic level of knowledge. Once you've got the basics down there are some great guides on city planning, but it mostly comes down to managing traffic.

Also remember that Cities: Skylines is so popular, awesome, and superlative-worthy that it has its own thread.

So this looks neat, a flight sim and city builder.

I'm tempted to take the plunge and try it out, since I love both of those things.

Looks VERY early access.
