This video on the music for Hellblade has me excited for the game.

I love Ninja Theory so I'm definitely in for this one.

Maybe not until it's on Xbone or PC, but at some point.

RPS just did a bit on this, I had no idea it existed until now! Looks really interesting, I enjoyed DMC a lot, and the focus on mental illness caught my attention for sure, they seem to want to do a proper job of it. This dev. diary in particular is worth a look at:

Same here. Hopefully they do a PC version.

It's kind of awesome that all team members have ninja in their titles. The game looks very ambitious. They've always been a fairly ambitious team. Every so often their games would aspire to some high artistic goals that their executions can't quite match. I hope they haven't bitten off more than they can chew this time around.

I remember being fairly underwhelmed by Enslaved. I loved the story and the designs, but the game was ultimately mired by janky controls and subpar combat. Was their decision to take on DmC an attempt to make up for this deficiency?

It's hard not to be excited about the game.

Hell Blade....Heavenly Sword...Spiritual successor?

I like the concept but the title is a little too raw and "bro-ey" for me. I think titles are important, and this is getting close to asking the audience to trust in a name like, "Bulletstorm."

Which I would, because Bulletstorm earned that.

Didn't realize the game had a thread already. Tagging.

This probably made me laugh waaaay to hard. My wife had to ask me what was so funny.

I know folks have already shared parts of the Dev Diary, but I marathoned them all today.

You can view them here. I'm really fired up for this.

I do find it amusing that they say they want to be the Independent AAA, somewhere between indie games and Triple-A making a game with an indie dev team size and "budget", but then they talk about their homebrew motion capture being as affordable as a smart car. I understand they're doing things on a budget compared to most AAA, but God damn, that's still a lot of money.

Even so, I do hope this game ends up being good, if only that it can provide a sort of motivation for game developers to allow smaller teams to do more risky things. Unfortunately, you still need a sizeable enough studio, and one that probably has everyone else working on something a bit more publisher friendly.

Based on their latest video, I'm anticipating this to be a 2017 release.

New trailer:

Looks amazing, and apparently the actress's performance was captured live.

It's so interesting watching that trailer after viewing the dev diaries, especially with headphones on. I recall how they were grabbing audio from multiple directional sources, which they implement heavily in this trailer. Information on that in this video.

Yup. Info on that here and here.

I probably shouldn't be following the development so closely, as it risks coming in with a bias and hope that the product will be good. But damn, I do find development fascinating and watching their approach is really intriguing.

Oh dang.

What's extra crazy about that was Ninja Theory was already animating faces better than pretty much everybody else way back with Heavenly Sword and Enslaved.

Giving them a tool like this looks like it should only improve that.

Even more interested now than I was originally.

Ninja Theory opens Senua Studio, a real-time cinematography company. Basically taking the tech they've used for Hellblade motion capture and bringing it into other games, film, VR, etc.

What's interesting about this is that the plan seems to be to outsource the tech in order to keep themselves funded, or at least that's my guess. In some ways I still feel like they're jumping the gun on an incomplete game in their push for a AA studio experience, or middle-tier of developer, but it essentially looks like their overall strategy is "outsource a lot to fund your artistic endeavor".

The real question is when the f*ck does it come out?

August 8, 2017.

It's $29.99, as befitting it's "smaller scope," whatever that means. Here's a new teaser:

Well I certainly like the sound of that price.

Bet you money it's like 4-5 hours long.

Ninja Theory tweetted they expect a play through to be 6-8 hours.

So I'm snagging this tomorrow. Is anyone else?

I'll be watching for impressions, with buying being likely. I usually like Ninja Theory's stuff, the concept sounds right up my alley, and the price/length are super right.

Never played a Ninja Theory game before, but as I said somewhere else, I've been very interested in this game for years now, and would like to support it... but I'll check out some reviews before committing .

God dammit I got this game confused with Hellraid and was all excited for a second, because Hellraid is never, ever coming out.

Carry on, my problem not yours', I'm sure Helllbade is nice too.

Final dev diary.

So apparently there's a mechanic in this where if you die too many times, it deletes your save file.

That's kind of awesome. I think that makes me more likely to pick this thing up.

I have to say, deleting your save file sounds completely un-fun to me, and the furthest thing from awesome. But everything else in the game does seem to be fantastic...

This is the story about it. It sounds like it takes a bunch of deaths to trigger, and they're pretty clear about how close you're coming to getting the file deleted.

Eurogamer's also got a review up. I haven't read it yet, but they give it a gold rating.

That's funny --I just finished reading those reviews (and a couple more) before coming back here. I will be definitely getting the game, and I hope I don't trigger the permadeath. If at all possible, I will play on the easiest difficulty setting (which I always do, regardless of the game) to avoid potential anger and frustration. I know you're a tougher gamer than I am (just compare my pathetic progress in Bloodborne to yours), but the permadeath does scare me. At least it sounds like it's rare for it to be triggered. I hope it is!

Looks like something to keep my eye on.
