Digital Shutterbug and Screenshots Thread

Pages

Anyone who's ventured to look at my Steam profile probably knows I like to take screenshots of games as I play. I can't be the only one here (*cough* Certis *cough*) who gets a little bit of digital shutterbug in their veins when they're playing. So let's use this thread and share our favorite screenshots!

I was a little bit inspired by this RPS article tonight and pretty much killed about 2 hours tonight pulling screenshots from Steam and running them through Prisma for fun. I'm pretty impressed with the results:

If we're allowing Style-Transfer screenshots, this might get dangerous for me.

Meanwhile, an Elite one:

I'll be going pretty crazy with in-game photography once Witcher 3 and No Man's Sky get Nvidia Ansel support.

But screenshots! Here's one of my favorite action shots I've taken:

Last one for a bit...some Dishonored (be glad I can't find my original screenshot folder for this game...I did a play-through which was ENTIRELY for cool screenshots! It's a fun one to do since you can easily reach a whole lot of weird nooks and crannies AND easily switch off all the interface stuff).

This thread is going to be so much fun! I love all the shots so far. I think I may create a photo blog for No Man Sky starting Friday (assuming Nvidia Ansel is baked in from the start). It'll be fun to have a goal of taking 10 good photos each time I play.

I see people favor scenic shots... where as I tend to grab action... Well here's a mix of both, some straight from the game, some filtered through Prisma:

I gotta figure out how to hide the UI elements in No Man's Sky.

Is Prisma available as a desktop program, or is it limited to being a mobile thing? Seems super clunky if I have to take screenshots on my PC, transfer them to my phone, edit them, then transfer them back to the PC to post.

As far as I'm aware it's solely mobile. There's ways to do similar things on PC, though setting it up in Windows is a bit of a challenge (this one has a Docker image, which might be the easiest, for a hard value of easy).

Yeah, it's baffling that for a cloud-based service they don't have a desktop client let alone a web page to submit requests with. My guess is by making it mobile only they're artificially limiting the amount of usage its getting. As it was, I was getting "service over capacity" responses two nights ago for about 20% of the requests I sent.

If you're on PC, it's an option in the graphics menu. I hope they add a keybinding soon.

I'm on PS4 unfortunately. Thanks, though.

I think Spore had Will Wright at the center, so that makes sense

And so it begins...

So, this is a giant 10240x5760 image of Toussaint that Ansel spit out. I didn't have the previous weird issue with the blocking.

And I did a little editing on that to get this other slightly less giant photo. So cool!

Next step is to go take portraits of NPCs.

Unfortunately, there is no depth of field setting which is going to kill Nvidia Ansel for me. Many of the PS4 game photo modes have it, and it's completely essential if you're doing anything other than landscapes. :(

Fake depth of field may be an option, but I may have to wait for Nvidia to add it in before I start trying to do portrait shots of NPCs.

Edit: I didn't actually downsample those which would probably be the best way to go because you're relying on how the computer image display is downsampling. I think I'll shoot for giant images and downsample to 4K whenever I do this in-game photography stuff.

Can Ansel export a depth map? That would be sufficient to fake depth of field in Photoshop.

Gremlin wrote:

Not that I saw. It would only spit out JPGs for the super resolution mode. There might have been a setting I missed, though, and I vaguely remember them saying something about exporting a sort of RAW image.

It looks like photoshop CS6 and later has an Iris Blur tool that makes the fake depth of field thing easy. I don't have it, but if I get enough good shots together, I might subscribe to creative cloud briefly. There are ways to do it with previous versions, but it looks like a huge pain.
