Doom Catch-All of Doom

I got the BFG 9000.

I'm at the last boss and it seems like it's gonna be a pain in the ass. First one took me a while. Second one wasn't as bad. This one...not sure even how to proceed yet.

So far I've loved the game, from the look (despite the limited palette it still looks great), to the chaotic battles, the choice of weapons, the rune challenges. It's been so good. I hope this last boss doesn't break me.

... and done!

Other than the last boss being a bit too much of a bullet sponge, and some waves of enemies going on for a bit too long, this game was so well done. They ain't kidding when they recommend to keep moving. I played on Hurt Me Plenty - I can't imagine how tough some of the places might be on a more difficult setting. I also can't imagine playing this with a controller with how much aiming you need to do while running and dodging weapon fire.

With the new Vulkan patch. My 1080 is hitting 200fps in this game...

Edit: Only problem is, doesn't look like Gsync is supported. So I'll go back to OpenGL and its lousy 150fps.

Nothing like getting tearing at 1440p and 144hz because you just get way too high a framerate

When that happens I always like going into the settings and seeing how high I have to set AA to get the framerates to stay below the max refresh rate.

Problem is. Its already maxed out.

Get into the driver profile for the game and start turning on more things! All the things all the way up!

I'll have to run comparisons with OpenGL, but at first blush Vulkan felt smoother in the mp I bounced into last night. I occasionally had framerates tank in mp with OpenGL and it was maddening as that can be the difference in who frags who.

I run a 144hz monitor and was averaging 110fps with everything but textures maxed out @ 1080p. I forget the AA setting. Clearly my machine needs an upgrade.

I tried the Vulkan API on my EVGA GTX 970/i7-3770K and the screen seemed jittery when I moved the camera. This plus the benchmarks I'm seeing online that show no improvement on the GTX 970 means I'm back to OpenGL. It does 60fps at 1080p anyways, and that's all I want.

Vulkan works a little better for me but I'm still bottlenecked somewhere because I'm getting drops to the 30's in heavy action at 4K with SLI 980ti's.

I suppose I could drop it down to 1440P but what a defeat that would be.

Anyone else running with 60+ fps at 4K?

I'm surprised the GTX970 isn't benefitting from it at all.

I am curious as to whether or not the CPU might be limiting as my 980 is not a slouch. Surprised to hear SLI at 4k leaves you at 30fps.

I turned off VSync based on a note that I read on the Bethesda forums, and that fixed the jittering in Vulkan rendering. Unfortunately after running it a while it got a bit crashy (3 crashes in less than an hour).

I forgot to mention, even the credits were entertaining and I barely ever watch credits.

Oh yeah! The credits were awesome!

BTW, I tried Ultra-Nightmare for a while last night - I don't know if I'll keep beating my head against it or not. After a while I started making progress, but in about an hour of playing, I never finished the first mission. I got pretty close, though.

Did you start a new campaign or use your progress from your prior playthrough?

The game won't let me select anything above Ultra-Violence to replay a mission. I think you must start an Ultra-Nightmare campaign from the beginning.

A warning, Ultra-Nightmare is a no-save playthrough; a true iron man with permadeath. Once you quit or die you start over.

Nightmare, OTOH, is normal saving with no permadeath at the same difficulty.

Also, Nightmare, unlike the lower levels, doesn't allow you to change difficulty during the game.

I pretty much gave up on Ultra-Nightmare for the time being. I'm just not fast enough. It's too easy to die from a stray shot from a Posessed Soldier or an Imp fireball you didn't see coming.

Uhh, you lose your progress in Ultra-Nightmare if you need to quit the game for whatever reason? Harsh.
Welp, I had no designs on even giving that a try. Regular Nightmare yes, but not like this!

You can save your game, but only at the end of a mission. Ultra-Nightmare basically removes checkpoint saves. Oh, and deaths in Rune Trials don't count, also, so I guess there are checkpoint saves before those.

Ahhh okay that makes a lot more sense. I thought id was expecting hardcore fans to heat their homes with their round-the-clock running consoles/PCs.

I stand corrected. Now having read up on it, apparently you must save and exit at that point and not after the next level loads as that will blow up your progress.

That's nice; it would have been good to know that before I had finished the first level and quit after loading into the next level.

I updated my NVIDIA driver to 368.81 and have not experienced any crashes with Vulkan since. Of course, now that I say that, it will start crashing.

Well, I was having fun up until stage 2 of the first boss fight.

Drop the difficulty?

I have never been a fan of boss fights, although the ones in DOOM at least don't ignore basic game mechanics like many boss fights in many games. I still suck at figuring out boss vulnerabilities. I guess they're just too subtle for me. I need textures flashing red to tell me what to aim for.

Took a break, came back, and got through both that boss and the next one.

Spoiler:

Finding out that the BFG stuns bosses and turns them into health and ammo pinatas was kind of the key. I still didn't particularly like either of the bosses, but once I knew how to restock mid-fight, it became less of a frustrating battle of attrition.

Still don't particularly like that the rest of the game is all about kinetic movement, picking your targets, and optimizing a path, while the bosses are "circle strafe and figure out how to dodge a simple pattern until their health bar's done." Oh well.

Last weekend I got frustrated because several times I'd die, restart from checkpoint, die, restart, die, restart, do really well!!!! ....and then crash to desktop...

I came back to it today, turned some more settings down, and didn't crash and finished the game. A lot of fun, although I apparently don't have the first-person-shooting skills that I used to. Turned down the difficulty at the end just to power through.

And I only unlocked 3 classic levels through this playthrough. Looks like I'll be diving back in just so I can replay some of my favorite levels from the original in this new game.

Finished up. Last boss wasn't actually too bad. If you're like me and tend to conserve ammo for your largest gun, don't. It's really the key to the boss fights. That and gauss rifle in siege mode made everything okay.

just finished as well

Spoiler:

curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
