GWJ OOTP League Thread

I tried downloading the new file and the server said there isn't one.
My current in-game date is Monday, 6/20

WHA?

Alright, I just uploaded the file again, because I noticed no-one had uploaded a team file. Try again!

All good. I was able to download the new file. New in-game date 6/27

I forgot to say new file! last night.

So.... new file! We're up to the International FA signing period!

i keep getting tons of blank emails in game like in the screenshot, anyone else?

example

That is also... not normal. Hrm....

Oh really? That's something I've always got since the first OOTP league I was a part of.

I don't get a ton of them, but I seem to have a couple pretty regularly.

Bah! I've been covering REAL sports a lot this last week, and I got sidetracked! On the upside, support your local minor league team though, they're fun!

Also, new file! The All-Star rosters have been announced, how many of your players made it?

I'll do a mid-season wrapup post before the next sim tomorrow!

GWJ Baseball League Midseason Report

Well, not exactly midseason, as teams have played closer to 90 games, but still, it's searingly hot outside, pools are open and there's a badly-plotted two-hour explosionfest in the cinemas. Sounds like midseason baseball to us!

So, how are things looking in the GWJ baseball league so far? Well, it shouldn't come as a surprise to find out that Baltimore is atop the National League by a whopping 17 games, with a best-in-baseball 65-23 record, but our preseason predictions had Boston atop the Continental League. Instead, the Beakers are 5th at 45-44, while San Diego and San Francisco are tied at 52-37 for the pennant.

Midseason Awards:

NL MVP:

Colton Mitchell, SP, Boston

There's really not that much argument about Mitchell being the NL MVP right now. He's 15-1, tied for 1st in shutouts, and Top 10 in ERA, Strikeouts, K/9, K/BB, WHIP, FIP and WAR. He's arguably the most dominating force in the league right now,

CL MVP:

Dustin Turo, LF, San Diego

Turo is either first or second in Batting Average, On-Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, OPS, wOBA, Hits, Home Runs, Isolated Power, Extra Base Hits and Total Bases. He might not reach last year's .359 average, but right now, MVP of the Continental League, no doubt.

NL "I Hope You Can Get a Refund" Award:

Bruce Estrada, RP, Indianapolis.

The 1982 Cy Young winner got the second-highest salary in baseball when he signed for $1.5M for the Golden Spikes in the offseason. But, it looks like the front office in Indy has gotten a hard lesson in why you don't give 43-year-olds that kind of money. Estrada's been relegated to the bullpen, has only pitched 25 innings, and is getting worse quick. I'm sure both sides would like this marriage to end sooner rather than later.

CL "I Hope You Can Get a Refund" Award:

Matt Hall, SP, New York

At $1.72M, Matt Hall is the highest-paid player in baseball. He was supposed to be New York's ace this season. But, time is still undefeated, and the 38-year-old is currently 6-9 with a 4.46 ERA. He can still turn this season around, but right now, he's a pretty big free agent bust.

NL Pitcher of the Year Award:

Colton Mitchell, SP, Boston

See the reasons listed above.

CL Pitcher of the Year Award:

Caleb Emery, SP, New York

11-5, WHIP of 1.00, 98 strikeouts and just an overall strong performance so far this year. Some might quibble and say San Diego's Victor Hard deserves the honor, but we're gonna go with Emery.

NL Rookie of the Year Award:

Kevin Hancock, RF, Pittsburgh

There aren't a lot of standout youngsters in the NL this season, and by the end of the year, Hancock may not have played enough to qualify for the actual award. But at this point, he's got 7 HRs, is batting .273 and has the highest WAR among NL rookies at 1.4. I mean, someone's gotta win it.

CL Rookie of the Year Award:

Bill Terrell, RF, New York

As opposed to the NL, there's no question who's winning this award right now in the CL. Terrell is batting .325, he's got 10 HRs, 46 RBIs, he leads all CL rookies in every important category other than triples, stolen bases and strikeouts. This one's easy.

So, with all of that done, new file! We're on the other side of the all-star break now, so remember, the trade deadline IS approaching!

Also, again, when you demote players, check to see if they have the right to refuse demotion to the minor leagues (indicated by a ^ mark that can be seen on the Rosters and Transactions screen). One of you (I won't get into specifics) tried to Waive and DFA a 34-year-old vet who had ZERO intention of going down to AAA, so I stuck him back on your ML roster.

Oh snap, trading deadline! In case you guys haven't noticed by Pittsburgh's puny 35-victories, we are looking to rebuild, so yeah, everything is on the table, including my all-star catcher Ben Doyal (.304/.362/.836, 11HR), who should be able to help someone else along down the stretch.

My pitching is totally lacking and it's probably what I'd prefer in return, Triple-A/Double-A guys. My SP Mullikans (lefty) and Campos don't have any kind of stats to look at but they do eat up innings. My RPs are reasonable, including the setup man Steve Holmes and closer Jose Sierra.

Like I said, re-building. Everything is on the table. Let's make some deals.

Okay, SP Mullikans is gone.

Anyone want Ben Doyal, Pittsburgh's young, solid-hitting, catcher who's known for his field vision and calling great games (okay, I made the last part up.)

I want to unload my RP Steve Holmes and Closer Jose Sierra too. No need for saves if I'm not winning any games

No reasonable offers refused!

New file! Whee!

Hoo-boy did ya'll ever have some TRADES for me to catch up on!

New file! Since you all had so many trade offers, and the deadline is coming up, I've only simmed two days. I'll do two more tomorrow, and we'll pass the deadline Monday.

new file! Ye olde trading deadline has gone poof! It's August, and we're now officially heading into the season's home stretch!

Oddly, it's the same date in-game as it is me uploading this today!

So, Baltimore is damn near a certianity for the championship, but San Diego is #1 in the CL, with 3 teams within 4 1/2 games. That is, by no definition, a lock.

New file! I am dumb and got caught between looking for a new job/celebrating my birthday. Apologies!

Hey, Commissioner of a Professional Baseball League is a full time gig - do you think its wise to go out looking for another job??
(Kidding - and Happy Birthday!)

The standard, I figure, is "don't be worse than Bud Selig".

New file!

New file!

New file!

Pittsburgh officially eliminated from playoff contention. Yay.

New friggity file!

New file! The end of the season doth approach!

New file!

Are there any teams open?

There are, but we're almost to the end of our season! Stay in touch, and DM me once things are finished!

New file! We're so close to the end of the year! It's looking like San Diego is pulling away from the pack and it'll be them vs. Baltimore for the title.

New file! The end of the season is upon us! And it's going to be San Diego v. Baltimore for the title. CptDomano vs. the AI, in the ultimate battle for supremacy!

We're gonna start the World Series on Friday. Two games each sim. Domano, I'd get your lineups and rotation ready.

After that, roll on the offseason!

What time on Friday are we talking here? AM or PM? I'm in Germany on a work trip at the moment so I just need to know if I should set this up before I go bed (it's 6:30pm right now, and I'm not expecting to be back to the hotel until probably midnight) or if I can wait until mid-afternoon when I have a break.

....And yes, I may have installed OOTP on my laptop so I could check up while I'm here. SO?

EDIT: Okay, file uploaded. Let the epic battle vs. the AI commence!

I was about to say, for you, we'll do it tomorrow, but since you've decided to upload...

But first, let's take a look at our season, vis-a-vis the real-life equivalent.

So, our inaugural season was based on the 1988 season of MLB baseball.

- Jose Canseco led the league with 42 HRs in real-life. In our league, Jack Martin led with 35.
- Wade Boggs batted .366 to lead all batters in real-life. Miguel Aleman led with .357 in our game.
- Frank Viola (remember him?) had 24 wins to lead the league in real-life. But Colton Mitchell had 25 in our game.

I didn't find a ton of major variances though (as, ostensibly, it should be). Kirby Puckett did get 234 hits in 1988, while no-one in our league cleared 200. Oh, and Rickey Henderson stole 93 bases that year, while our league leader only had 65, but Rickey Henderson was a living, breathing statistical outlier for the entirety of the 80s. Our batters had better plate discipline though, only 2 guys struck out over 140 times, whereas in reality, 7 guys were in the 140+ club.

On the mound, Roger Clemens was easily better at striking people out than any of our pitchers were. He notched 291 K's, while our Nick Baird only got to 236. But we did have two 20+ game losers, while reality only had one.

Now, on to the real baseball, and the New File!

Game 1 of the GWJBL Championship saw two 20-game winners go head to head, but neither did particularly well. Both Colton Mitchell (25-6) and Victor Hard (20-11) gave up 6 earned runs apiece, but Hard had the unfortunate luck of an error allowing two runs to score in the bottom of the 8th. Robert Lafon closed the door in the 9th, giving Baltimore a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2 pitted Justin Huff (19-9) against Nick Baird (17-10), and Huff was swamped early by Baltimore's bats, not even making it into the 3rd inning of the game before getting pulled. Jack Martin's grand slam to cap off a 7-run 3rd inning (after San Diego had managed to take a 5-3 lead) basically ended the game as a contest, and Baltimore effectively cruised to a 13-5 win and a 2-0 series lead.

The series now heads to San Diego. Can the Commodores stop this year's juggernaut from rolling to a predestined title?

Yeeesh. Okay then. I was kind of worried when looking at Baltimore but holy crap.
