GWJ Community Voice Comms

I've installed both Discord and Curse and they both have nice looking interfaces. Struggling a bit to work out the functionality in Curse, I'm always seeing icons with a (1) or something and nothing happens when I click on them. Also I could only join the GWJ group by clicking on the URL in the OP in-browser and restarting the desktop app, pasting the link directly into the program didn't work (join button was greyed out). Not sure if that's by design and I just misunderstood something or what.

Now I get to sit back and lament that no-one new is playing the same games in the same timezone as me.

I think the "1" icons mean that's there's one new message in that room. If you saw "14", that would mean there have been 14 new messages since you were last in the room.

As for the "no-one new" problem, I'd imagine there are many other folks having the same problem for the same game at the same time. It's just that none of you know about the others. That's one of the problems I'm trying to solve for in my gaming startup. Maybe in another month!

I tried the Curse Web app first and it asked me for an account name and seemed to log me in, but never asked for any passwords to be set or for an email for confirmations. So I then decide I like Curse and d/l the client and go to login but of course there is no email or password associated with my username so it just tells me the account name is already in use. Will this free up after a certain amount of time. Discord holds temp names for 24 hours, then releases them so you could setup a permanent account. (It tells you this when you try to setup a permanent account with a temp username) Will Curse do this? I could not find anything about this on Curse support pages.

TIA

Your temp account will be held for 30 days, and as long as you didn't explicitly log out, you can return to curse.com and find yourself still logged in with that account and upgrade it by adding an email and password.

No dice. Must have logged out or something got hosed. It would have been nice if it would have let me know this was possible before I blocked myself from getting my preferred username for 30 days on the full client.

I do question the wisdom of having the name locked up for that long and not warning me that this could happen when I choose to "create an account" in the web app.

Thanks for the quick response anyway.

Now if I could just stop leaving the group inadvertently on the mobile app... That UI needs some "I'm over 40, and this could be clearer" help.

Mobile app upgrade is in the works, I think. Desktop version was recently changed a lot and the mobile version is no longer connecting well.

Yup, the mobile app got neglected in the past few months while we were getting our big desktop upgrade out the door. We're already underway on a complete overhaul of the mobile app. It's going to be awesome!

I want to give a bit shout out to whoever owns/runs the Curse server (I think it's Cathadan?) I've only been on Curse for about a week but it has made my online gaming experience so much better. I used to eschew online games and online play, especially over voice chat, because there were so many shrilly-cursing teenagers and impatient/toxic try-hards that took away from the experience. The Goojers are so nice and patient with a relative newbie like me and I've had a blast playing Overwatch with them. I've gotten better with their advice and I feel like I can now hold my own. Thanks!

Anybody notice a weird bug where a room will show a certain amount of people (e.g 5), but when you enter the room it shows more?

For example, i'll occasionally see an overwatch room with 5 then enter it, suddenly another name pops up in the room that wasn't there before and now it will show 7. I'll then leave assuming that somebody joined the exact same moment and let them play. The moment I leave the room count drops back to 5. I joined and exited the room a couple of times to make sure that I was seeing this person as "hidden" when outside the room and they weren't just coincidentally joining/leaving the room at the exact same time as me.

I've noticed it. It does seem to be the same people that are "hidden" as well. I only noticed this because the last two times it happened to me, Cartoonin was the missing name in both instances. I have him friended, so it's not a "can only see friends" issue.

...eye got nothin'! I don't know what happened.

Just tried Curse yesterday for the first time, it worked pretty well (my friends and I usually use Mumble for it's low-overhead, smaller footprint, and low latency), but Curse works really well for big communities of people I don't know at all. Played some Overwatch and it worked nicely.

Quick question. Is there a way to set the "default" volume for each new person in your voice group? Currently it looks to default to 50% and I have set each one individually to 100% from within the in-game overlay. My Curse settings have everything maxed.

I don't think there's any other options.

It might help to think of the middle point as 100%, and adjusting it to the right as boosting it beyond 'normal'. So if you find everyone to be a little quiet, I suggest increasing Curse's overall volume in the Windows volume mixer, and using the overlay to make smaller adjustments.

I initially tried doing that, but since I use Mumble most of the time with friends, that's my current 'normal'. It does volume adjustment on the sender/server side, which I prefer (nobody has a lower/louder volume on the receiver's side, never have to adjust anybody), so I can't do much for it in my client.

Wish Curse would just default to 100% (or whatever default I want), I'll just have to manually up the volume from 50% to 100% for now (actually I think I set most people to 75% yesterday after lowering Overwatch's master volume to 50% from 100% from within the game).

Don't mind me, tagging the thread. Time to join the GWJ masses.

We have a public alpha release for the new android client now! Click through if you want to live on the bleeding edge: https://play.google.com/apps/testing...

Also, we're well past 500 members in the Curse server as of the end of last month!

I've got a small guild renting a 25 slot mumble server. Can either of these two be used as a replacement? Does Curse allow password/invite locked always available servers with a static name? Is there a hosting fee and do they have a PhP code to place a viewer on a website to see who is in the channel?

My only experience with Curse was playing Smite. It was integrated into the client to auto-join temporary channels for the DoTA style matches. Once the match was over the channel was closed.

Either will probably be a suitable replacement for a private rented mumble server. I don't believe you will find a PHP script to list active voice members for either one, but it would certainly be possible to write one (and it's easy to see who is online using the official web clients for either). Neither one charges any hosting costs whatsoever.

I'd encourage you to join the GWJ server on curse and click around a bit. I think you'll find it fits the needs of a small guild pretty well. Feel free to PM me if you have any more detailed questions!

I noticed something kind of odd with Curse, namely the iOS app. It allows me to favorite channels, but then doesn't do anything with that. I thought it was weird, but maybe didn't do what I thought it would, until I logged into the desktop app and favorites were right at the top, like I expected them to be.

Man do I find Discord so much less annoying to use than Curse. Curse desperately needs some behavior changing and "turn that sh*t off" UI options.

Twitch just bought Curse.

Discord dominates with their streamers so maybe they wanted to jump in there?

Then again, Curse Voice is a pretty small part of their company with all their websites, mod stuff and YouTube channel.

And Twitch proper is owned by Amazon. One thing I lIke about Amazon is when they purchase companies, they allow them to effectively operate independently. Hopefully this is a good marriage.

Yup, it's been a pretty big day over here!

For the time being it's just going to be business as usual, but once we start crossing the streams...

Lol i thought my Curse client was broken today. Logged in just now and nobody was online, first time on a saturday night where i've gone onto Curse and the entire GWJ channel was empty. I even ended up rebooting my machine to just to be sure. Last night there were like 4 Overwatch rooms going, weird to see Saturday night empty

Saw the same thing just now logging in to play overwatch
odd

Entire GWJ server on Curse looks empty to me too for the last two nights I tried although I am on GMT.

Our D&D group was on a Curse channel on Monday Oct 3rd from 8p-10:30p which is around 1a GMT Oct 4th.

I'm on PST, and I've personally found the best times are between around 5PM until about 9 PM for Overwatch. Around 8 or 9 PM ppl start to drop off on weekdays, but it's about 11:30 PM right now on a friday and I see a full room going.

I met Radiobot today and it was pretty cool. I always liked the idea of a community based radio. I remember back like 15 years ago I was part of a large gaming clan, we tried to set up an internet based radio for members to use, we even had plans to have things like community announcements occasionally played between songs like a real radio station. Unfortunately at the time the technology wasn't there yet so we our plans didn't go through. Do we have any plans for Radiobot other than just to have him sit in his den?

Don't worry, Amoebic has big plans for RadioBot!
