NieR Automata (aka Nieronetta) Catch-All

Thank God for the producer!

And I'm glad some of those perspective changes and thus genre fusions will remain. That's one of the reasons I fell in love with Nier.

I guess I need to go back and play Nier 1 again. I never got through it, or even very far.

I'm absolutely loving the look of this combat. So fast-paced, and a lot of range given she f*cking throws her swords around. And all this navigation they're showing as well. Man, I cannot wait until this releases next year.

I will buy an over-priced Collector's Edition for that model!!!

The story in Nier is amazing and one of the best stories in video gaming.

The gameplay is really janky. There are some cool, genre-bending moments like bullet hell-style projectile patterns during boss fights and (at one point) a text adventure, but most of the gameplay is combat from a mediocre PS2 brawler.

Which is why I'm excited that Square-Enix hired Platinum to develop this one. Hopefully they can bring some of their action gaming expertise to the table to compliment the excellent characters, worldbuilding, and storytelling already in place.

Yeah, they're showing so much new stuff! The combat audio sounds really, really great. I love the 2D locked perspective is staying for some stuff and that there will still be a lot of the RPG stuff from the first game.

The boxing gloves and the on-your-toes boxing stance are so frickin cool. They had that type of weapon on Drakengard 3 sorta, but I didn't like it all that much. Looks like they fixed that weapon type.

Model? Statue? Do tell. I'm googling, but can't find anything

I was actually wondering if some of Bayonetta's animation staff might be on Nier: Automata. It's a weird and superficial connection, but the attitude and manner in which the protagonist in Automata walks with her heels just reminds me of the very runway-model style that Bayonetta walked. Automata's protagonist isn't nearly so dramatic or performed, but it suggests the manner in which a woman walks while in heels was studied and recreated carefully.

Makes me wonder if they had to mo-cap a poor woman running full-sprint in heels.

Oh geez, that boss fight. Any sadness about the delay has been washed away. I am more than happy to wait for more of that.

Edit:

It's almost bloodborne esque combat

Sounds like Nier got Bayonetta Platinum and Scalebound got Korra Platinum.

edit: I should probably say something... but all i can come up with: I want it, I want it, I want it!

I compromised to keep it from being confusing.

I was thinking the opposite.
Bulletsponge and bullet-hell.

Hard to judge from a single boss fight of course.
Early part jumping over the lasers look nice.

And I need to bust my copy out of shrinkwrap. Too many damn good games this year and next!

Oh my....

That boss fight doesn't look all that much different from boss fights in Nier, but everything about the character movement and combat looks so much better. Can't wait.

All aboard!

Nier isn't a super long game by typical RPG standards. It's right around 20 hours if you don't mess with side content. The (required) 2nd playthrough is about half that. The last two endings are safely Youtube-able IMO, especially considering how much busy work is required to see them in game.

I don't know if it will be important to have played Nier before playing Automata, but you really should play Nier regardless. Despite the underlying mediocrity of its primary mechanics, Nier is one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had.

Made a GIF of the boxing stance:

Wow, that looks so much like the pugilist/monk animations from FFXIV.

Kinda looks like Ryu's stance from Street Fighter as well, just more hoppy.

I think Tuffalo is in wuv.

Spoiler:

So am I. Lucina has new waifu competition.

One of my favorite artists has been doing some fan art.

This game looks great! I didn't even know the first one existed, so I hope you'll pardon my ignorance when asking: how do you pronounce "NieR"? Does it rhyme with "beer," "liar," or something completely different?

I've always pronounced it as "near". I'm not sure what the whole thing is with the capital R.

The katakana for the upcoming game is ニーア オートマタ. In Japanese, Katakana are symbols that represent normal Japanese syllables, but they are generally used for foreign words or titles and signs. General Japanese language writing is represented by Hiragana which also represent syllables just like Katakana or Kanji which are way more unique and complicated. Katakana is kind of a bold face font in a sense. Those syllables with each one getting one beat in rhythm would be pronounced ni-i-a-o-to-ma-ta. Those syllables would be pronounced nee-ee-ah-oh-toh-mah-tah. At any rate, in Japanese, you'd say Neeeee-ah, but in English it just gets pronounced as Near.

Now that I've written that out, maybe they have the capital R on the end because in Japanese they don't have that sound and the approximation is an "ah" sound. If that's correct, holy hell that's hilarious and awesome.

My knowledge of Japanese is limited, so I may have some things slightly wrong, but the gist of it should be correct.

If you do have interest in the first game now, start by listening to the soundtrack. That's what got me thanks to a GWJ and Gamasutra article Minarchist wrote awhile back on game soundtracks. If you do end up trying to play it, it's a rough gem but extremely worth it for the story, characters, and music. I actually like the gameplay and find it relaxing, but I'm in the minority on that one.

Thank you for that detailed explanation. I am a tiny bit familiar with Japanese, so what you are saying makes perfect sense. (That said, I can't read it or speak it, something I would love to learn at some point so that I can read manga in the original language.) As for the soundtrack, I will give it a listen, as I've heard several of you guys say it's amazing!

Yeah, feel free to chime in with any questions or whatever. I recall that you were pretty specific about being interested in Persona 5 but not in some other JRPG types for aesthetic reasons. While the graphics may not be great and a bit janky, NieR is killer when it comes to aesthetics. Mostly, it's just effin awesomely weird.

I dove deep into NieR's soundtrack because I play piano and imported the sheet music for the piano collection soundtrack. A few Japanese pianists did fantastic and unique arrangements of the music.

I can actually play this one well (not perfectly) which is super thrilling, especially playing the huge chunky chord ending part.

You remember correctly! I am interested in Persona 5, and now NieR! What's happening to me? Am I going to start playing lots of Japanese games? Well, if they are awesome, I won't mind, haha. The character designs I've seen in the videos on this thread are great, and the environments look pretty interesting. (And being effin weird is usually a plus!) The same is true of Persona 5, which is why I hope I will enjoy these games, even though I've never played anything similar.

And hey, so far I'm liking the NieR soundtrack!

The Nier soundtrack is so good... How about getting Nier up on PSN and make it a PS+ title for a bit of cross promotion.
