Doom Catch-All of Doom

Yeah I'm gonna give the bastard another go before I head out door for some sunshine. Wish me luck!

Love the commitment from the iD on this to improve multiplayer!

They linked to the Eurogamer interview and I was so pleased to see them mention bot support is coming. Bot support! Aside from Treyarch's CoD games this is such a rarity. Playing with bots is what got me "good" back when Unreal Tournament was the bee's knees. I loved being able to tailor a match exactly to my tastes and playing lag-free.

Adding bot support is a sweet newb-friendly gesture that I have no doubt will get more people interested in competing online. It also shows confidence that they're not afraid of siphoning players out of the online lobbies. And I don't think anyone expects them to award XP or unlocks in offline bot matches so there is always that allure to hopping online.

So far the word seems to be that the single-player campaign is a lot of fun - have most of you found this to be the case? I likely won't play the multiplayer component, and may wait until I can get the game for $40 or so to play the SP campaign.

Do we get any cool "non-fighty downtime" like in Doom 3's intro? I must admit I loved that part of Doom 3, walking around this scary, dangerous looking place without a weapon, wondering what I'd gotten myself into.

There's a good balance between shooty-shooty and searchy-searchy. It's more like the original Doom, on that you get waves of enemies but when they're done you have time to breathe, hunt for health and find key cards and secrets.

As for being without a weapon, if you find yourself without a weapon in Doom you're probably doing it wrong.

Oh it's very good. The hype is real. Easily worth the $40 on the strength of the SP campaign alone. If you check your brain and expectations at the door, the MP is also a great bit of fun.

As doubtingthomas has said there's good mix of all-out violence and quiet moments. Keep in mind the sense of empowerment is much more in the spirit of DOOM 1 & 2. It's subjective I suppose but I wouldn't exactly call any part of this new DOOM scary or creepy nor did I ever feel like I was partaking in a survival horror-type experience. In fact you could make a case for many of the demons being somewhat terrified of the Doom Marine with the way he man-handles them for those Glory Kills (i.e. finishing moves).

Welp, defeated the Hell Guards using the slowest method possible but yay, it's done. Very satisfying.

Spoiler:

I didn't realize I could blow up the glowing balls for the first guard but figured it out for the duo and good thing I did because that sh-t was getting nuts.

Played the Doom demo after Bethesda announced it being available to download last night. The shooting, movement & melee are as smooth as butter, the 60fps helps this even further. Like the upgrades already, gonna look for a good deal & jump into this.

You don't need to make a case for it. It's explicitly stated in-game that they're terrified of him.

Also, the whole "screaming in terror when he grabs them" thing.

Ohhhhh crap. I really shouldn't have played the DOOM demo. Big mistake. Big. Huge.

Really can't afford a $60 game right now, even with a 20% GMG promo making it $48.

Damn you, Bethesda.

Still haven't found any of the retro DOOM levels. Are they really well hidden? I could check an FAQ but I'm hoping I'll just stumble across them.

Not too spoilery:

Spoiler:

Look for doors that don't have an obvious way to open them.

A bit more spoilery:

Spoiler:

There are ways to open them, always within the same general area.

Even more spoilery:

Spoiler:

Levers.

49.99$ at bestbuy Canada this week, traded in Darksouls 3 towards it. Much better price then the normal 79.99$.

it's $40 at Best Buy this week. Even better with Gamers Unlocked.

Like others before me, I made the mistake of playing the demo version and now I've got a really high priced game on my list...
Just so I know: How about the multiplayer? How good (if any) is it?

It's servicable, nothing spectacular but good enough for a couple of hours of fun. They will do paid multiplayer DLC though (maps and the like), so it's been destined to fail sooner or later since before release.

It's not bad if you can get over some of its shortcomings like the CoD-like set loadouts and lack of a pure deathmatch mode (soon to be remedied). The unlocks and leveling come fast and furious and it's surprisingly fun to customize the look of your avatar. Id Software is handling ongoing maintenance of the multiplayer and they seem intent on giving it the legs it needs to survive as more than just a throwaway mode.

The matchmaking can be a bit slow but once you're in playing it runs very smoothly. Moment-to-moment play is very frantic, even spammy. I expected higher time to kill compared to modern shooters but things like BFG spawns, demon runes and a suprisingly far-reaching super shotgun often lead to many quick, unsatisfying deaths when you're on the receiving end.

Anyone with older nvidia cards have any tips on things to turn down if I'm having trouble with Doom?

I've got a GTX 660 Ti.

I've had a couple places where I got extreme slowdowns. And tonight I've had two crashes to desktop.

I'm downloading the latest driver update, so I'm hoping that helps. And I turned some settings down from high to medium. But I'm not sure if there's certain things in particular that I could turn down for less crashes at minimal cost to graphic quality.

I had it running smooth as silk on a GTX650, but I turned everything down to bare minimum.

I played the demo on PS4 and found it pleasantly enjoyable. It's also amusing how I'll still play cautiously. When I'm coming up on an arena I hang back, find the possessed, and start sniping them with charged shots before dropping in. Clear the mooks out before Imps and Possessed Soldiers show up (who I am certain become the mooks later on).

Depending on how the summer goes, I'll probably end up picking this up sometime in July or August.

Doom 1993 - 2016 : Monster Comparison

I've been playing more MP and the game struggles with getting teams even about half the time. There's no auto-balance in match, either, so once one team is rolling that's that. The loadout stuff is bothering me less and the raw movement pace of the game is enjoyable. I think the time to kill is much too short, on average, and you often scratch your head wondering why you died instead of having a clear picture.

Steam summer sale has this at 40% off right now. Super tempted to grab it at $35.99 price point.

DO IT.

Yeah I caved last night. #iamweak

You'll like it. Because it's awesome.

It is glorious. My 10-year old self just reached through time to hi-five my 20-year old self who raised the horns, reached through time and hi-fived my current self after I picked up a berserk power-up and punched a bunch of holes through a stream of nu-imps while a pounding industrial electro-metal soundtrack throbbed a beat to the slaughter.

The music, the movement, the wry humour, the weapons, the blood... I didn't think it would ever happen, but it did. ID managed to out-Doom my wildest childhood expectations.

I can't shoot for sh*t any more.

Almost beat the game, I'm at the last level now. Really great single player that is a great homage to the original Doom.

I was curious. I'm nearing the end. Are there any winks and nods to the originals or Doom 3 in terms of level or plot? I can't for the life of me remember anything about the first few dooms.

Have a great restrospective!

Doom with a controller is hella fun! I'm having hella more fun with it than I was with hella mouse and keyboard. The hella moving around you have to hella do is actually making it hella easier for me to hella aim.

Hella.
