Watch Dogs 2 - Catch All

Sweet. I started replaying the original a few days ago, and as I recall saying when it was new, there is a fantastic game under a few significant flaws. If they clean up what's bad and keep what's good, this should be amazing. Unfortunately, that trailer doesn't tell us much of anything... but at least I have something to look forward to now!

I'm excited the bones of a really great game were everywhere in the first game.

I'm cautiously excited despite the general blandness of the first game. Being set in SF is also a plus, and there seems to be a lot of attention to detail. They've even got the Wharf Bushman!

*raises an eyebrow*

There are a couple more videos on their channel, although so far what ranalin posted is the meat of it.

I like some of the changes/ideas, dislike some, not sure about some. But I don't want to get ahead of myself based on minimal information.

They had me at San Francisco.

I wonder which of Marcus's relatives will be refrigerator'd for this game?*

*Snark translation: I am skeptical that their story will be as cool as they make the game out to represent. Especially considering that's apparently what happened with the first game, from what I'd seen-- rad presentation, interesting story about a vigilante hacker fighting corruption in Chicago, only to find out it's a revenge story about dead relatives.

Otherwise, I think it looks pretty cool (though I've yet to play the first one, it's been on my "Interested" list since it was first revealed, in spite of the hefty flaws I've read about). I really hope they consulted Corey Doctorow on this, since it basically looks like Little Brother: The Game.

I'm so charmed when they start showing hacking and groups of hackers. Here's what this game will look like in a few years:

On a related note, I'm trying to convince my wife to throw a "Crash & Burn" themed anniversary party.

San Francisco setting means I have to play it just to see how well/poorly the city is represented and try to look around my neighborhood...

day one purchase.

I said the same about WD1's Chicago setting and was super-stoked on that, then I saw how they "consolidated" the city for gameplay purposes... I want to think they'll more easily replicate SF (since it's far fewer sq. miles), but I won't get my hopes up...

Watching the video I saw Oakland and what I presume to be somewhere down the silicon valley corridor with the big tech campuses (which would make sense given the story). If you are going to have the Golden Gate Bridge, then Marin is on the other side, so it looks like they are going to condense a lot of the bay area. Ubisoft does have a presence here in SF so hopefully they *tried* to get as close as possible.

I'm sure liberties will be taken, but since I live between the GG bridge and golden gate park (two must have locations in a game set in SF), I'll just assume whatever is in between is my neighborhood

Unfortunately there's a chance that no matter how good this game is if SF isn't represented the way *I* want it represented it will go straight to the pile. I was really looking foward American Truck Simulator with so many of the preview screenshots in the CIty, but once I got the game and realized how little of the city was actually created, I pretty much quit on the spot.

The original had significant flaws, but it sounds like they fixed at least some of those. I'm filling this under 'cautiously optimistic'.

As much as I wanted to like the original when it was announced, I just didn't find the final game that appealing. Watchdogs 2 looks more interesting though, and I'm cautiously hopeful.

Is it just me, or am I the only one getting kind of bored with open world games, lots of fairly blah side missions, etc.?

I'm sure it's not just you, but everybody has different tastes. I find that I like to go back and forth between open world style games, and more linear ones.

I think it's safe to say, though, that you're going to get "open world with lots of fairly blah side missions" with Watch Dogs 2. It's the Ubisoft way. They cram a lot of stuff in their games, take a lot of chances; occasionally it turns out amazing (gang hideouts), occasionally it turns out tedious and boring (poker games), occasionally it's going to be a matter of opinion (fixer missions?). When we're lucky, they do mostly good stuff and don't force too much on you if you don't want to do it. But unfortunately, they haven't really figured out how to direct and produce these things with the same user feedback a focus as more linear games, so some crap usually sneaks in.

San Francisco looks beautiful, looks like there's a huge variety in population & the tasks their doing to make the city come to life. I am stoked for the parkour & co-op should be fantastic. In general it looks a good step up from the first game which at times was glorious.

They even talked about being able to hack some of the tech buildings if I can remember correctly. They are taking all the right steps for this sequel just hope this new protagonist & story are a good bit better than last time around.

Yeah, add me to the list of people who didn't give two sh*ts about the original game but who will be compelled to check this game out since it's set in the Bay Area. (You really would think that more game would be set here, or at least in a fictionalized video of here, right?)

Yeah, in a longer video they describe the setting alternately as "the Bay Area" or "San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin county." On one hand, I'm excited to see the greater variety of scenery that attempting the whole region will bring, but on the other, I'm with you: if they attempt too much, they're going to miss a lot of the small details that would really make it feel real.

I also wonder whether it will attempt to capture the feel of some of the open spaces I love so much, although I expect not from the nature of the gameplay they seem to be about here. Not a lot to do for a hacker misanthrope out in the Marin Headlands, or at Land's End, or up in the parks in the Berkeley hills, right?

I have to admit that because of a.) what I've read about the first game (I didn't play it), and b.) because it's a video game, I have little faith that this game is going to handle things like the Castro District in a way that's not obnoxious or offensive.

I was a bit phased by that trailer but, over all, it's a great approach. I like the main character.

Definitely enjoyed the original, and they are adding co-op? This is top of my list for the fall now!

It's interesting to see from the comments how different my tastes are. To me, a move to San Francisco and the addition of co-op are the worst (as well as the more youthful main character and art style)... I liked the dark, moody, sort of dystopian vibe of the original. And of course I immediately turned off the online features both times I played. I want less "Hackers" and more "Mr Robot."

I'm more excited about some of the mechanical changes. The drones could be interesting. Always nice to see a person of color as a main character, with the hope that we're approaching the day when it's not even noteworthy.

Of course the worst problems of the original were a weak story and a really poorly defined main character... he didn't need to be more colorful, to me, but the contradictions in his behavior were very hard to reconcile. Unfortunately it's too early to tell if they will have more narrative consistency. There were also some balance issues, even for an open world game, but it's also too early to know if that's addressed.

There are probably very few people who played the first Watch Dogs, are looking forward to the second, but who have NOT played the "Bad Blood" DLC for the first one... but I was one, until last week, and I want to recommend it.

Besides having a lot going for it that shows a positive direction (T-Bone is more interesting and much more consistent), it also gives some clues that are probably significant to the overall story. Watch Dogs 2 looks like it will feature DedSec even more prominently, and there are some side missions in Bad Blood that give you great insight into some stuff going on in DeadSec. It also includes a camera-equipped RC car that shows the groundwork for having remote control drones.

Also as an FYI, as they recently did with Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, Ubisoft is doing an online thing where you get points for logging in every day and/or doing little activities (like watching videos and voting in polls), with the points used to enter prize drawing or buy free DLC. If you're interested in that kind of thing: http://watchdogs.ubisoft.com/watchdo...

I was interested in the original game prior to its release. I waited for reviews and to see it in motion. I realised that it wasn't what I had hoped for. Yet it is still a game I look at a second time when I see it on sale. The idea of Watchdogs is what appeals to me. The execution hasn't lived up.

I'm not intrigued by the sequel, not from the initial reveals. The younger protagonist has cooled it further. I worry what the motivations and the lingo may consist of. A hipster (or perhaps it is modern and I'm out of sync) art vibe freeze my interest.

It's early days, though. This could be the greatest gaming protagonist of all time, or at least a solid addition. The over arching story behind it all may intrigue. Importantly, it may play well. The gameplay of the original looked good in parts. If they refine that, add a few additional layers, strength it across the board, then it would be difficult to ignore.

Oh look, a game with the theme and story that... the first one really should have cashed in on waaaaaaaaay more. O_o

The original's decent gameplay, interesting world, and this game's interest cast basically have me in on this one.

20 Minute gameplay video. Looking good! Love the drone for scouting.

Playing Mafia 3 had made me interested and excited in this. While the story and solid gameplay is pushing me forward in that, I wish there were more tools and more interesting options. I'm hoping Watch_Dogs 2 can provide, at least, a serviceable story with fun mechanics.

Im strangely excited by this, despite having been very disappointed with the first. The few previews that I have seen have said its much less serious with a better lead protaganist, so may even buy it on release
