On this thing called "rape culture"

16 Students of fort myers Disciplined After Performing Sex Acts in School Bathroom in Florida

Also horrible news but relevant here, don't read the comments unless you want a sampling of some of the more vile examples of rape culture at work.

Even from the piece itself;

he said. “Just the sheer volume of participants, allegedly 25 boys, suggests mental health issues with a 15-year-old girl. It should be investigated as a crime, taking advantage of someone with a mental health issue.”

now that's some twisted victim blaming, granted the trauma of being gang raped likely left her with some mental health issues after the fact.

Sadly this story gets even worse. The girl was a victim of human trafficking.

NBC 2 wrote:

The girl’s mom took her daughter to the organization after having saved her from a human trafficker who held her captive for two years.

“She was only 13 when she was trafficked,” said Estrem.

The girl was placed into multiple treatment programs, the most recent was eight months long.

But because she’s a runaway, only a handful of programs would accept her. None of them addressed the devastating ramifications of sexual abuse.

“She did get some help, but it wasn’t specific for what she needed,” said Estrem.

She was a student at South Fort Myers High only two weeks when the incident happened.

“She was not equipped to make a stable, rational decision in that situation,” said Estrem.

Her mother said the girl went to the boys bathroom to talk to a boy she had a crush on. She said the boy wanted sex, and her daughter complied — then word got out.

I hope everyone seen entering that bathroom had to get tested for STDs and if any of them come back positive the whole group gets treated.

I hope the girl was given a Morning After pill immediately, otherwise, on top of everything else, she's may not be moving anywhere.

I can't believe the administrator said "let's move on". What does this say about the school? It makes me want to look behind the bleachers, open all the doors and inspect the maintenance closets.

That's a horrible story. Can you help me tie this into rape culture and not just horrific racism and bullying? I understand the original article used the word rape, but this looks to be in a whole different level of Hell.

Probably the part where the defendants ignored or were indifferent to the ringleader's behavior due to his connection to prominent members of the community.

They're so often intertwined. Rape, racism, and bullying are all about one thing: power.

Also, before the hanger incident, there was this:

The victim, one of the few black students at Dietrich, let alone on his football team, was subjected to frequent abuse by Howard and his fellow teammates, including “aggressive ‘humping’, jumping on him from the back and simulating anal sex,” according to the suit.

(emphasis mine)

A culture that allowed that to go unchecked is indeed a culture conducive to rape.

Pretty much this. It seems to me that this was a series of acts of sexual domination in an attempt to destroy the individual as a person. It is hard to see this as anything other than a culture of rape culminating in what was eventually the violent violation.

I hope the folks who did this get to benefit from a federal institution that can give them the help they so clearly need.

Thanks! Really helped give perspective on the link.

Dear world, can we maybe stop this nonsense?

Campus rapist given lenient sentence to avoid "severe impact on him"

At this rate this crap really comes across as "psht those gals will be fine, but won't someone think of the man?!"

Guess who also went to Stanford for undergrad...

(Katie J.M. Baker, BuzzFeed News, 2016-06-03)

Six months county jail and probation...

This f*cking planet.

According to the comments, here is information on the judge:

Department 89: Honorable Aaron Persky
Courtroom Clerk (650) 462-3880
Court Reporter: (650) 462-3885

He is apparently up for re-election on June 7 in Santa Clara

Should be up for appeal by the prosecution or what kind of message does the bench want to send to the public about violent crime?

Rich White Athetic lives matter, duh!

The father of Brock Turner wants everyone to know how his rapist son was horribly affected by raping the Stanford student...

The next time someone questions the existence of rape culture, I'm going to point to this. I mean, we knew the parents must have gone wrong somewhere...

I read part of that victim statement and then read the father's letter. The father might do well to reflect on how he would feel if it were instead his son found assaulted behind a bin and a 100% guilty verdict issued against the perpetrator.

I take small comfort knowing the media coverage ought weigh on other judges' minds when sentencing similar crimes and so this travesty of justice goes unrepeated.

holy sh*t

My choice of words after reading the father's statement were significantly more profanity-filled... and even that doesn't fully express my rage at this.

Pretty sure that Dylan Roof is paying a steep price for a great deal less than 20 minutes of action.

I am really struck by how effective and moving her statement was. It brought me to tears. And even more angry at the light sentence given to the rapist. The victim has some informative and pretty disturbing comments on how the probation officer's interview with her was conducted.

There's a Moveon petition to remove Judge Aaron Pensky from the bench due to the Stanford rape case verdict:

They also have an assumed potential, unfortunately it's an assumed potential for illegality regardless of what they were doing.

Black women definitely have a past.
