Brexit (June 23rd)

Pages

This is going to be highly entertaining. A good article explaining the realities of such a referendum and how it really won't be about facts but mood and trust.

As an aside, if you really want to, you could look at this video to see how difficult the post exit scenario would be. A brace of former Prime Ministers and several former government Ministers (all from various Member States) simulated the negotiations all organised by a euroskeptic think-tank. It's three hours long

In order to make this relevant to the Goodjer community, Obama is coming to the UK this week and it's causing a ruckus. Boris has been reduced to calling him a hypocrite without Obama uttering a single word as of yet.

For those that don't know, Boris Johnson is the current Mayor of London and he is leading the leave campaign in an attempt to lead the Torys. So, he is hoping to be Prime Minister.

I'm telling you. Have your popcorn ready because this is going to have some quality moments at the end date draws closer.

Englishified, but yes.

Yeah, I'm thinking if the vote goes to Yes it'll be a good time to visit England in a few months. Decent weather and a tanking pound versus dollar/euro.

Boris visually sometimes resembles Trump.. wait.. I get it now! It's a worldwide coup by alien clone army! They are here to.. *bump* .. and soon they will *slash* .. people must kno...

*static*

Well, Boris is borrowing some of Trump's tactics...

Actually don't think he is that bad. I just think he may have realised that he has gambled badly. I think he assumed it was a Win-Win strategy if he lead the Leave campaign but as the opposite is coming to pass. This is causing him to act out as the pressure increases.

On a more entertaining front, the BBC are doing a series on the history of the UK in relation to EU. Obviously very UK centric but lots of first hand accounts and footage that explain why they are in this position. I'd recommend if you are in anyway curious of the recent history of Europe. Good starting point.

Of course he's not, comrade.
*taps his brainstem controller and winks at Axon*

I hear you, Most.

Watched the second part of that BBC documentary and I'd thoroughly recommend it. I'm sure it'll crop up on YouTube and I'll post it later but seek it out if you can. It's still very UK centric but the amount of tempers lost during the one hour is entertaining viewing.

Politics of Fear in full swing from both sides over here.
I will be voting to stay in for we need to be in Europe far more than Europe needs us. And pretty much every major business leader is coming out in support of in and the economic experts. Meanwhile the out team are led by a group of crazy folks and racists.
If leave wins, Scotland will have a reason to go independent so I will just move there instead

Well, Boris referred to Obama's argument for staying in the EU as "ridiculous" and "weird". Now follows some picture of Boris Johnson.

I could go on...

He's got the "Cruz smile" that creeps out so many people.

Cruz? The man has to be Gary Busey's twin:

Not technically Brexit but...certainly related

That really isn't far from reality. You can see parallels in the second and final part of that BBC documentary about the UK and the EU . Again very UK centric and a little light on details but a highly entertaining watch.

British Home Secretary wants to leave ECHR. Closer to reality indeed.

Trump supports Brexit!

Can't say I'm all that surprised seeing he views NAFTA as the worst trade agreement in history.

Tempers are beginning to fray. Official leave campaign threatens TV station with "consequences" for not including them in debate.

ITV has lied to us in private while secretly stitching up a deal with Cameron to stop Boris Johnson or Michael Gove debating the issues properly. ITV has effectively joined the official IN campaign and there will be consequences for its future - the people in No10 won't be there for long.

Lets be clear, nobody is the Tory party is using this referendum as a springboard to unseat Cameron. The thought of it!

I found this article very well argued. It addresses the issue on how down turns in the economy post Brexit are not dismissed by the Leave campaign but accepted as the price exiting the EU.

Call this what it is: elitism. People who work in and around politics are mostly screened from the vicissitudes of the economy. An MP, peer, adviser, columnist or think-tanker has job security and, if it fails, an escape hatch to the public relations sector. In Westminster, the crash did not happen. Any post-exit recession would not happen there either. There is something of the gung-ho general billeted miles from the frontline in the Leave campaign’s untroubled contemplation of an economic downturn. Insouciance is a rich man’s privilege.

I'm completely partisan, of course.

The whole thing is a catastrophic sh*t show that is being played out as a proxy Tory leadership election. It is literally the worst. At a bare minimum leaving will put that British economy in the toilet for 10 years.

Yup.

Would you kindly save us all!
All these disaster scenarios were "fun" at first, but no more please. We do not need a BrexiTrumpugee-warming Crisis.

So the Brexit referendum is the same day as the start of the Steam Summer Sale. Coincidence? I think not!

unfortunately as far as polls are concerned it looks like the whole anti-immigration bullsh*t is winning over common sense. I can only hope people chicken out at the last minute the way half of Scotland did during our referendum.

Of course, in generally Scotland is very pro-union but we're a tiny fraction of the voting population of the rest of the country so...yeah, still managing to find new and interesting ways of getting get screwed over by the south.

Give the English something to cheer them up right as their economy crashes.

My only thought/hope is that there is a large number of undecided voters in many polls (12-20%). I'd assume that such people would be more likely to reflexively vote in, if the vote.

Hurry, transfer all your savings to TF2 hats. They don't lose value.

For those watching the polls (which were so successful at predicting the results in the last general election) I would take a look at the bookmakers. Most of them have pretty much stopped taking bets on the remain vote winning. I wouldn't worry too much just yet. Just make sure you vote.

Good point. And lots of the polls got the scots referendum wrong too.

Don't forget the French Presidential election next may. I'd argue it's far more serious on a global level than either of the above.

Two weeks out and it's getting heated. One man risking an entire country's future to sate his ambition? Perish the thought.
