General VR Catch-All

I ordered a Vive on May 30th and it arrives today (it was shipped on June 1st). Not bad since May 30th was Memorial Day.

I've played stellaris in virtual desktop... The screen door effect gets pretty pronounced with all the text in that game on a big screen, but it is playable. Decreasing the screen size helps a bit so I don't have to move my head from side to side to get text in focus.

I really want the total war series in vr, or the civ series. A remake of medieval total war for vr would be amazing with elevation changes.

Yeah I think strategy, especially turn-based is going to be a really cool genre to utilize VR. You can already get a very basic taste of it with Out of Ammo which combines "god mode" overhead view with down on the ground shooting mechanics. Surprisingly deep for a game that looks like a beta Lego game.

I really want to make a game that recreates the tabletop strategy wargame experience in VR but I'm an amateur programmer at best.

I would love to see an online pen and paper RPG system in VR. Something like Fantasy Grounds or whatever where the DM could build his dungeons with premade 3D assets.

Im not sure how good the on-table representation is but AltspaceVR has some RPG support with minis on a table and dice rolling. Its a little janky but its gaining popularity and is available now for free.

Not having a VR headset myself (yet) I can't verify this, but I believe Tabletop Simulator has VR support and might be an option for this. Either in designing what you were envisioning, (You can scan in Hi-Res images) or through the very expansive selection that is Steam Workshop.

Wow I had never browsed the workshop for Tabletop Simulator. The video for the game just makes it look like a dumb physics sandbox that happens to have checkers etc.

What I'm really wanting to do is make my own game though with my own IP etc. The wargaming experience can be a lot more immersive, exciting, and without a lot of the time sink fiddly bits like token tracking, rule lookups and measuring in a VR form. Never gonna happen (at least not from me) but I can dream.

I pre-ordered a Rift, but probably won't get mine until July... I'm still building up my Steam wishlist for Rift compatible games though. Are there good resources to find non-game VR simulations somewhere? I'm genuinely interested in exploring educational and non-game environments and experiences.

So I finally got around to The Cubicle... I wish I had done this earlier. I was blown away. If you have a Vive you have to get this (it's free!). If this is what VR can be, the future is very bright indeed.

Finally got my Vive set up... uhmm... WOW!! Setup was pretty easy, except the two hours I spend driving around town looking for a mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter. My card didn't have an extra HDMI port, talk about a "KHAAAANNNN!!!" moment.

We started out with TheBlu which was awesome, but then I loaded up ViveCraft, which was mind-blowing. If you haven't checked it out, it's a mod for Minecraft and easy to install.

My daughter had a few friends over (8 yrs old), so taking turns in ViveCraft pretty much took what was left of the evening.

Looking forward to trying out other titles today.

Yeah this was very cool and pretty intuitive.

If anyone wants to try and run a game of some kind using Tabletop VR - let me know - I'd love to give it a whirl.

Big update to The Lab today. Added endless wave mode to the archery game, additional game modes and leaderboards to Xortex and the slingshot game. Really excited they did this... I love Longbow and always wished it was longer.

Link to all the details.

Im hoping Tabletop Simulator gets a discount on the summer sale. If it does and VR folks can cross play with non vr folks then I'd love to play some games.

Ordered my Vive over the weekend. Can't wait to get it and try everything out

Get ready for a serious productivity drop.

Budget Cuts demo is killer! Really, really makes me want the biggest possible play area though!

Just tried budget cuts... omg, that is so awesome! When are they going to make more?!?

Are there any more stealth games like that? I was literally crawling on the floor (in real life) and peering around corners... such a cool game type in VR.

To think this VR stuff is just in its infancy... can't wait to see where they take it.

To me, Budget Cuts is the best VR game out there right now. I can't believe it was made by one guy. The full game is supposed to come it by the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

Unseen Diplomacy is more of a tech demo, but it has you crawling through vent shafts and contorting around laser beams to get to your goal, and uses a neat mechanic to avoid having to teleport around.

Ok, I'm getting frustrated. Been playing with my Vive all day and everything was going well, then while running The Lab, everything went black and my PC rebooted itself. Fired it up again, and it was fine for a while, then same thing.

Figured it was a problem with the game, so I swapped over to Vanishing Realms. That worked great for a bit, but then the same crash/reboot. Fired it back up, crashed even faster.

Every time I restart now, the crash comes sooner. Now I can't even launch a game, it just crashes immediately.

Checked all the usual things. Graphics drivers are up to date. Vive firmware had an available update, but that didn't fix it. Temps are good - CPU hovering around mid 30s, GPU gets into the mid 50s. Got a high-end 750w PSU, and the GTX 1080 draws relatively low power, so that should be fine.

Found a couple references on the Steam forums to the same issue, but no resolutions. Guess I'll open a support ticket.

I had SteamVR crash for the first time ever today. It worked after a restart though, but I wonder if there was a wonky update somewhere recently.

Well, tried a bunch more things this morning, no help. I haven't done a clean OS install on my PC in many years, and there are probably remnants from old hardware drivers and old Windows versions on my system drive, so I'm gonna just use this as an excuse to finally get around to doing a clean install. I'll ber back later, hopefully

It looks there was an update yesterday. Maybe that's causing your issue?

I got my shipping notification this morning. Vive should be here on Thursday !!!

Apparently Vives are shipping within about 72 hours of purchase now. They've clearly solved any pipeline issues.

Makes me want to rethink my Oculus order. As I'm still over a month away from being able to use my "rift ready rig", I'll delay rethinking my order until then. As I'm most likely to be using VR for car/plane/space simulators, the Rift seems better suited for me (based upon the reviews I've read).

We shall see.

I thought the same thing until I got my Vive...

Ditto. Despite my crashing issue, now that I've used my Vive for a few hours, I can't imagine limiting myself to a seated experience. The Rift may compare favorable when they release their touch controllers, but for now I don't think there's any competition.

Clean install didn't help. Guess it's time to open a support ticket with Valve. Grr...
