Doom Catch-All of Doom

Warpath is enjoyable, as I find it does a good job of keeping things both focused in a small locale with a particular goal and dynamic (attack/defend, the capture zone keeps moving) which provides a great deal of back and forth between the teams.

TDM, on the other hand, is much more scattershot and random so far. In theory players should be grouping up to burn down opposing team members but the reality is that everyone pretty much runs off by themselves after the first 15 seconds.

The maps do have some nuance and there are power ups hidden around that are on timers and can be controlled; the verticality of the levels is also welcome as there is just enough to keep things interesting without being overwhelming.

Warpath was definitely better and I found myself getting kills with things other than rockets, though in all honesty rocket launchers were always spammed in mp anyway (in my past experiences with id games).

Some guy was owning everyone with the Shock Rifle thing though. Owning.

I had a really good time playing it. I wonder if there will be a decent single player with the game.

Did they crib a design from Unreal Tournament? I only got as far as unlocking the Lightning Gun, which was bunk.

I'm really hoping for a meaty, somewhat replayable SP campaign + great SnapMap support from both id and the community.

I'm not actually sure what the weapon was, it seemed like a cross between a Shock Rifle and a Sniper Rifle.

Ah, turns out it was a sniper rifle that fires energy: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Vortex_Rifle

Oh right. I actually liked the Vortex Rifle despite not never being much of a "sniper guy". It worked surprisingly well on these maps too.

I tried this on PS4 over the weekend. Can't say I'm sold on the multiplayer, but hopefully the single player holds up. I mean really, I'm getting this for SP, not MP, so it's not a huge deal, but it was horribly laggy when I tried to play, to the point of barely being playable.

Holy Crap is this game BORING. I think I've aged out of this type of gameplay. If you're a kid and never played this style of game, you'll probably like it.

I think this developer single-player session may have just sold me a copy of the game.

Yeah, I'm far more interested in single player for this. The beta told me I will absolutely not be playing online.

I saw this at Pax East, and I'm very nearly sold as a day-one purchase.

Nearly...

Easter Eggs are exactly what you think they would be.

Spoiler:

And I love it

I just watched the Eurogamer video on Doom's campaign and, um, I think they got the chainsaw wrong. The saw chain looks like it is mounted backwards. The cutting surfaces of the blades are moving away from the direction of the cut.

That saw would be utterly ineffective. In fact, I think the blunt, ramped surfaces on the rear of the cutting teeth would just bump the blade away from any surface it came in contact with.

The chainsaw is made that way because it is for fighting demons.

John Romero's head on a sitck.

OK, that´s pretty sweet.

I agree, pretty sweet.

That got me to musing.... when Doom first came out, even playing back a static video that looked as good as the end of that GIF wouldn't have been possible.

The thought of playing a game that looked like that, rendered live.... that would have been Ender's Game-class science fiction.

I've been thinking about that while watching development of the new Final Fantasy. That game looks better than the famously beautiful prerendered cut scenes of the older games, and it's not the most visually impressive game out there now.

This reminds me of when I got my first programming job at Atari Computer in the late 1980s. We would network groups of ST computers in the office to raytrace images that consisted of only a few geometric objects and some light sources. It took several nights to produce a single image.

That GIF is amazing. The Doom 2016 reveal is basically what 14-year old me saw when first feasting my eyes on Doom 1993 screen shots in Computer Gaming World (RIP).

Two game releasing one same day- Doom and Battleborn! Gamers this year is the luckiest one to try these games out. WAITING!

If you preorder Doom on steam right now you get a free copy of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. That was just enough incentive to tip me into preorder territory.

My only fear is that they still haven't released official PC requirements that I can find. I'm running a GTX670, so I'll probably be able to handle it. Fingers crossed.

EDIT:

Well crap.

Minimum requirements call fo a GTX670, but when I check my device manager it says I'm running a GTX650. I thought for sure the computer came with a 670 when I bought it.

Good thing Steam lets you return games.

I dunno, looks like other people have gotten it to work.

That said, a real fan of old school PC games would go out and buy a new card. Duh.

How is Old Blood? I am thinking it sounds worth it but I hate preordering (everything goes on sale - often before I have gotten to them in my pile anyway)

Rarely, very rarely has a game been great but they just didn't want reviewers to put out reviews early.

Where's Polygon's Doom review?

Publisher Bethesda informed Polygon and other outlets in the middle of last week that they would not be providing advance copies of the game for review. Their explanation appears below.

DOOM is comprised of a single-player campaign, online multiplayer, and SnapMap. After discussing, we believe all three elements are important parts of the complete DOOM experience, and are meant to be experienced as part of a complete package. As DOOM’s SnapMap and multiplayer modes both require access to a server that won’t be live prior to launch, review copies will arrive on launch day.

Sounds like it's right up my alley then.

I'm planning an upgrade, but there's no point in buying a 970 when the next generation is due so soon. If it runs, great. If not, I have to decide if I want to return it or just hold it until I upgrade.

Haven't installed it yet. I'm one of those odd ducks that doesn't want to play a bunch of older (insert genre here) games before a highly anticipated release because I don't want to burn myself out on it.

I've heard, however, that Old Blood is objectively worse than New Order, so naturally I was interested in Old Blood first...

I'm going to save most of my thoughts for the review, but let me just say: this game is exactly what I want a game called Doom to be in 2016.

Also, it runs fine on my GTX650 provided I turn everything down and reduce the resolution. It still looks great to my eyes.

Great to see you got it to run on your specs! Looking forward to the review but from the sounds of it, I hope to get that nostalgia from what I felt back in the 90's with the original.

Even the Cynical Brit likes it? I might have to check it out!
