Monster Hunter Generations (Ultimate) (3DS/Switch) Catch-all

Gaijin Hunter's videos are the best place to start. ~15 minutes, and he goes over a lot of the weapons:

HH is for hammer users that can't be effective enough at the hammering portion and needs songs to supplement their usefulness. ......... Dyni ...... (unless i'm on DB then HH is great because I want that stamina)

Ha! No infinite stamina for you then escher77!

Edit: my on point comment now not so on point due to some editing by escher77

LoL I just edited my post then you posted during it.

Yeah escher, gotta have your sick DB dps. Wait, no, you're just here for status effects.

Smack talk aside, my HBG dps was garbage

My hammer DPS is great. However, you don't want to be near the head when I am on hammer.

You just need to announce when you're doing it so we can get the mount and stab the back of the monster more.

Okami costumes for your Felyne

This needs to launch. NOW!!!!!!

I never really tried the Hunting Horn. It should appeal to me though, as I love playing Bards in various MMORPGS. Is it anything at all like that? Someone give me the review of HH that I need to give it a swing, pun intended.

It's not really like a bard class because supporting is just a beneficial side effect of using the weapon properly. The hunting horn is a competent damage source that also provides great supportive abilities. It is there for damage first and support second, but the real beauty of the hunting horn is that you can do both at once once you get a good handle on the mechanics.

Songs are set up by combinations of three available notes, and each swing of the hunting horn represents a different note. X is the first note, A is the second note, X+A is the third note, and R plays a song.

At first, you'll probably just set up songs away from the monster, play them, and then run into battle. With practice, you'll strive to always be in battle with the monster. You will use attacks against the monster in the right order to set up songs and then play a song when an opening arises.

There is no real maximum dps combo for the hunting horn like there is for other weapons. The best attack order is the one that sets up the songs you need.

Hunting horn deals KO damage to the head and exhaust damage everywhere else, so regardless of where you're hitting the monster, you're building up to a valuable status effect for your group.

One of my other favorite aspects of the weapon is that unsheathed run speed is faster with the hunting horn (plus the default song) than with any other weapon.

I've spent a couple hundred hours with the hammer and hunting horn, and a good amount of time with lance, greatsword, and insect glaive. Hunting horn is my favorite by a long shot. It's complex but rewarding, and if you get the hang of pumping out songs while doing damage, you are invaluable to a group. Even just the base Attack Up (L) song is a 20% boost to damage for everyone in the party.

With even more practice you can play a song and attack at the same time! never works for me tho...

Wow, ok Dyni. That was a pretty sweet review. I'm definitely interested now. Going to give it a shot when I get off today. Thanks!

Side note: YES! Generations cannot get here soon enough. Although, I would like to start the game with a new weapon so... I will need a bit of extra time to practice with the HH.

Cathadan was kind enough to open up a channel in Curse for Monster Hunter. Curse seems like the new hotness, in terms of extra-game chat, especially for games that don't have voice chat, like Monster Hunter.

Join the GWJ group, and the new Monster Hunter channel is among the games listed.

I don't know how to share an invite to the GWJ curse group, maybe someone can post a link if they know how?

Latest Japanese MHX ad :

OK, so I figured out how to link to the GWJ Monster Hunter Curse Channel:

Gaijinhunter has been posting updated tutorial videos for all of the weapons and styles in Gen. I fell down the rathole of watching all of them on Sunday night.

I don't know what I want to play at release! So many good choices!

Day 1 perch!

This time I'm going to be all over multiplayer, so make sure to leave a spot open in your gathering halls.

I went all in on Insect Glaive last time, so this time I want something else. I'm thinking either Horn or Katana.

Oh geez, that's way earlier than I thought!

I have to say, that new Monster Hunter 3DS XL looks pretty good. If I hadn't already purchased an MH4U special edition 3DS, I would be all over that.

The special edition 3DS XL is available for pre-order on ebgames.ca here: new Nintendo 3DS XL Monster Hunter edition

Yessssss.... precioussssss....

What do we know about Monster Hunter Online? I have been reading that it's not region locked, and that there's now an unofficial English patch.

This is the for-China online Monster Hunter game. Apparently there's a walkthrough for how to set up an account for us that don't read Chinese.

Demo is (kinda) up! Details here!

The demo is 3 monsters - jaggi-like, peco-like, and Nargacuga and all of the weapons and all of the weapon styles. So a lot of options.

Sadly no lucky demo email from Nintendo for me (fingers crossed for future).

I have quite a few games I just haven't had any time for in a while, but I'm pretty sure I can't resist Generations on Day 1.

It's not region locked. I've been meaning to check it out for a while and installed it just the other night. The hardest thing I had to do was spoof a Chinese Resident Identity Card Number. The format is detailed on wikipedia.

I've been hearing more and more about it recently. Playing MH in HD is definitely kind of amazing. The language was perhaps an even bigger barrier than I expected though. I have yet to try the English patch since it seems to have been broken by the latest update, but videos of it I've seen make it look pretty amazing.

A few weapons were missing I think (light bowgun, glaive, charge blade) and movesets were a little different. I think some moves need to be unlocked? I was trying to use a 360 controller (ugh) and it wasn't super amazing. Menus and stuff needed a mouse.

I hardly knew what I was doing overall. I got through the first few quick quests. If the patch works well I would definitely play more (except MHX is a month away...).

I saw you play that on my friends list and I may have pronounced an expletive. Sorry.

I've been holding out some old birthday money for this game. But man, Monster Hunter 4U at half the price has been tempting me. Is it worth the wait and extra cash do you suppose?

Heheh; I saw you playing BOX BOY and thought "Good man, good man."

I made my own luck by donating to charity and getting a demo download code in return.

So far I've messed around with Guild HH and Adept Switch Axe, the latter of which is super-rad!

The online manual is also now available for perusal.

@maverickz: Everyone i see is planning on upgrading so you might be lonely in MP if you stick with 4U (cf. RoughneckGeek's post above^^). For a single player game, you can't go wrong at that price though!
