Battlefield 1 Catch-All: It is LIVE!

Y'know what? I'm down for some World War I as interpreted by modern blockbuster hit-driven Hollywood. I think.

I'd like to see campaign footage that's a bit more representative of the single player experience.

$220 for a collector's edition? This will be $30 at Gamespot after a few months. Comes with a statue of an unknown character. Hey if it was Nathan Drake or something or Big Boss, but come on EA.

That was some trailer. It was complete nonsense, but some trailer. I hope it's playable at E3, I'd like to see some real footage.

they'll probably start first rounds of beta at e3 like last time

Looks like generic white guy is still generic white guy. Honestly would be excited to see a revisionist take on ww1 where black and women soldiers were out there fighting because I love the idea of people getting upset that that is what makes the game historically inaccurate.

Did you look at the mega collector's edition? Really looks like the cover guy was black. The statue it comes with appears to be the same black guy. Something about this is causing the Reddit community to discuss black soldiers in WWI - apparently named after the Harlem neighborhood in NY.

This and the CoD dude being Latino shows me that companies are finally starting to listen.

Levelcap's break down of the trailer and some notes on other footage he saw. He picks out some incredible (and, as it turns out, real) weapons. Great to hear his excitement .

Or you know they could use historically correct Indian Soldiers that fought for the British during the war.

Well, I just walked to the local post box to post a letter and the trailer music was playing in my head the whole time. Upon my return I watched the trailer another four times. In fact, I think I'll watch it just once more.

Having Black soldiers would not even be revisionist. Lots of Africans from French colonies fought on the Western Front.

that's cool. Less cool that you only get them by preordering. I did see that box but in the trailer everyone looked white to me.

I won't hold my breath in the inclusion of women though.

Back to the vehicle problem discussed above, I put a large portion of some people's frustration into the stupid server settings bucket with insta-spawn on.

If you make vehicles more valuable to keep alive, and more important to kill because they're not going to just be right back in your face in 30 seconds, I think they're fine. You can't be nearly as aggressive driving them because you have to preserve them, and if you team up and kill them while keeping your own alive, you get a significant strategic victory.

Instant spawn ruins all that.

I came into the franchise multiplayer with BFBC2, and I think I loved it so much because it was new and I made several good gaming friends playing it on PC and 360. I continued having tons of fun with BF3 and BF4, but I probably look more sentimentally on BFBC2. Not necessarily because it was "better", but because I had a lot of new fun with it in a game style I'd never played.

But that's just me. I'm interested in this new one. DICE generally makes good trailers, so interested to see the reality of what we end up with.

Complete tangent but does revisionist history means something different in the States? because it's not the same as alt History. It's the practise of looking back on historical events and not towing the established line. For example Gary Sheffield's Forgotton Victory.

Where as counterfactual history is just imagining something was different - like what would have happened if the west hadn't discovered the potato?

So if this was an alt World War One game, with ahistorical weapons, armies, battles or whatever then yeah sure female soliders fighting on the Western Front. But if it's just a straight up game based in the real First World War, then I don't get the call to play as a female, unless you can fight in the Serbian army, who did accept female soldiers.

I am all for more history pieces focusing on the forgotton roles that women, PoC (pretty much anything that David Olusoga has done recently is worth checking out) ect played in various events but not for artificially inserting them into history for the sake of it. We wouldn't expect that of historical tv or film so why of games?

I'm pretty hyped for this and I think it's pretty bold of them to take the series to the first World War. Can't wait to learn more.

Press E to drown in mud.

Out of curiosity: SP or mp? Or both?

Single player. I'm sure BC2's MP is better, but they janked up everything that made the campaign so much fun in BC1.

Yup. SP in BC2 was horrible. The mp was great though.

I don't think I've had as much fun with a Battlefield title as I did playing Rush in BC2. Unfortunately, they've neglected putting anywhere near the same amount of care into designing Rush maps since. Here's hoping there's something more than Conquest (which I also enjoy) in the new title.

Unlikely I'll even touch the single player but who knows. I was pleasantly surprised by the campaign in Hardline but I can't day the same for any other fame in the series.

There was nothing quite like defending on Rush BFBC when ever structure in the immediate vicinity had been reduced to rubble and you were fighting tooth and nail over one last, stubbornly intact, M-COM. Or, conversely, trying to take an M-COM that was heavily defended where it seemed impossible to get through the cross fire and then, somehow, sneaking in, getting the arm and turning the tables on the defenders.

This is why I love GWJ, I've been seeing nothing but hate everywhere else. I get that this isn't the Battlefield folks have become accustomed to in recent years but I don't get the degree to which YouTube and the larger game community have roasted the WW1 concept.

I guess it's becoming more and more apparent that I am falling out of line with public gaming opinion. I LOVE this, and I loved the COD:IW trailer, and (if I'm honest) I love the idea that I'll be playing these games with a few less of the stereotypical BF/COD fan base.

Just saying', I won't miss the party chat insinuations about my mothers honor or the role of animal husbandry in my lineage if half the people threatening to boycott this game make good on their claims.

Whosawhatsit?

The youtube trailer is over a million likes vs 18,000 dislikes. Compare that with CoD infinite warfare that has 1.2 million dislikes vs 250,000 likes and has been up for far longer.

Most huge Battlefield fans I've seen talk about it have been excited by the setting.

I'm in wait and see mode personally but the general community reaction seemed hugely positive to me.

It's been many years but there was a Battlefield 1942 mod that took everything down to WWI tech. It wasn't super accurate and still used mostly standard maps, but it was surprisingly fun.

A lot of talk around the American Civil War as the first "modern" war, but from a technology standpoint we're much more used to the capabilities of the individual soldier and even much of our modern military technology, such as the evolution of the main battle tank, from World War II.

WWI is such a janky setting, and I mean that in a good way. WWI introduced a lot of the technology we use today in a completely unrefined form, which is why none of the tanks look like anything we currently use. Also, it was an amazing time for aviation. I'm glad they are trying something new and I hope this pans out for them.

The only thing I don't like is the main dude they keep showing with the cloak, the Mauser, and the trench club looks like the cover of some vampire novel that was tucked away in the corner at Barnes & Nobles.

I really like the setting they went with. It's something new and fresh. As mentioned in a few posts already, WW1 also has a flavor of combined arms ie artillery, infantry, armored, air, naval etc. Looking forward to more details on this title!
