Too Long; Didn't Play: Crypt of the Necrodancer

Dance Partner: Eleima

Time dancing: 96 Minutes

Twerk Review

Dance, dance, dance your way through procedurally generated dungeons in a roguelike with a twist. Also a mashed potato, and, if you’re very lucky, perhaps a monkey.

Time Warp Review

It's astounding.
Time is fleeting.
Screen calibration takes its toll.
But listen closely,
Not for very much longer –
I've got to keep control.

I remember the Crypt of the Necrodancer
Attacking those zombies, when
The rhythm would hit me,
And the shopkeep would be singing:

Let's do the Rogue-Like again!
Let's do the Rogue-Like again!

It's just a jump to the left
(Unless you step on a trap)
With your hands on your hips,
And you bounce on back to the right,
But it's the charging Minotaur
That really drives you insane.

Let's do the Rogue-Like again!
Let's do the Rogue-Like again!

It's so dreamy.
Oh, those loot drops please me.
So I can buy the
Health upgrades and all.
I collect some diamonds
With upgrading intention
At the wizard’s vending stall.

Then back to the dance crypt –
Don’t let your fingers slip
Or you will lose your multiplier gains.
Take out mobs to the rhythm.
Earning gold is your mission.

Let's do the Rogue-Like again!
Let's do the Rogue-Like again!

Well I was dancin’ down the hallway
Just a having a think,
When a dancing yellow slime gave me an evil wink.
He shook-a me up. He took me by surprise.
He had an unpredictable pattern and three hit points.
He whacked at me, and I lost some health,
But I whacked him back and got some gold in exchange.

Let's do the Rogue-Like again!
Let's do the Rogue-Like again!

It's just a jump to the left
(Unless you step on a trap)
With your hands on your hips,
And you bounce on back to the right,
But it's the headless zombies
That really drive you insane.

Let's do the Rogue-Like again!
Let's do the Rogue-Like again!

Carry On, Carry On Dancing?

A few weeks ago I said I was kind of done with Roguelikes. Well, maybe I’m not so done with them anymore. It might just be time to give One Way Heroics a second chance.

But this is about Crypt of the Necrodancer, which is an awesome game and deserves more play. This one will rank up there with Broforce and Nimble Quest as one of those games that I’ll keep coming back to when I feel like playing something fun, but don’t really want to invest myself in it too deep. Yes, I’ll keep playing Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Is it the Devil’s Dance?

Who here remembers Patapon? This game is nothing like Patapon. Patapon was a game with a neat premise that I just could not get into. The combat never felt right, and I just couldn’t get the hang of the rhythm-based boss fights. Crypt of the Necrodancer is, by contrast, very intuitive to me. Once I got the visuals and audio synchronized, which was the hardest part, the game is fairly forgiving.

No, Crypt of the Necrodancer is nothing like Devil Daggers. Crypt of the Necrodancer really gets my blood pumping, whereas Devil Daggers just gives me palpitations.

Bravo!

Based on accolades, I've been thinking about trying this one out, but I just wasn't sure. Now I'm more interested.

Thanks Eleima!

Up to 80 hours in Crypt of the NecroDancer myself. One of my all-time favourites.

Nice work, and thanks for checking it out! Have you looked at KeeperRL or Cogmind?

You missed the most important point about this game.

YOU CAN PLAY IT WITH A DANCE MAT!!!

Yeah, I know technically, you can play most games with a 360 dance mat, because it just looks like a 360 controller to the computer, but it actually makes sense in this case, where it doesn't for, say, Far Cry 3 (note to self: set up a streaming channel dedicated to playing games that really shouldn't be played with a dance mat, with a dance mat).

Necrodancer was my GOTY runner-up for last year! I still play the daily challenge regularly.

It really scratched an itch that I didn't realized that I had for a game controlled exclusively with the arrow keys -- not WASD, but the actual arrow keys -- letting me put those pre-mouse PC gaming skills that I developed back in the 1980s to good use!

Well done, BRAVO!! Wonderful, wonderful read, DoubtingT, just brilliant. And glad you enjoyed it, too. I'll be your dance partner anytime!

(in the middle of rewatching TNG, so yes, you get a Star Trek gif)

Necrodancer has made the rounds in the Chicago indie scene for a few years now. I didn't realize there was non-dance option until it was on Steam.

Best review I've read in ages. I couldn't stop smiling. This game has been on my Steam wishlist for quite a while now, but I guess that I'll buy it the next time it's on sale. Sadly, not more game reviews are in the form of awesome songs. Note to self: good idea for a website.

As long as this is on the front page, Crypt of the Necrodancer and its soundtracks are now on sale on Steam currently for 67% off, which is the lowest I've seen them! US $5 for the base game, another $5 for the base and extended soundtracks.

Thanks for the heads up WolverineJon.

By the way, I've watched some videos of Crypt... and it totally reminds me a lot of Star Tropics (minus the rhythm part)... or is that just me?

I've discovered a problem with the new GWJ updates.

I cannot "like" this TL;DP!
