Yes it is!

I love the orchestral colors though.

Sorry to necro but I wanted to share something awesome I picked up.

San Francisco Symphony sounds great as always and the combo of traditional orchestra and electronics really appeals to me. Mason Bates is the real deal in his ability to blend these sounds in a way that doesn't come across as oil and water. This is the way forward for classical music as far as I'm concerned. Can't stop listening to it.

Osiran, you might want to check out the Meet The Composer podcast. I've been loving it recently. Thy interview contemporary classical composers and highlight some of their music. I've found so much amazing new stuff from it!

Mason Bates played a concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony a couple of years ago that, I think, had some of this material in it. I agree that it's an interesting direction. Note that the night after his PSO concert he DJ'd a local club.

Also agree about Meet the Composer. A remarkable show.

You know of any similar podcasts psu?

Well, if I ever get around to making more episodes of my podcast, that'll be one, dibs:

No not really. Meet the Composer is unique in how it advocates for newer music and living composers in a way that actually works.

This one: http://www.classicalpodcasts.com is almost completely different in every way, but also interesting and vital. There is a lot of material there on less well-known composers and performers, but the emphasis is not on contemporary music, but a larger range of periods.

That Nico Muhly meet the composer is really good. I like what I've heard of his work, and it's nice to get a little backstory.

Odd, that was one of my least favourites, though i really liked the section where they played with the viola! Not that that is really a slight, they are excellent throughout. If the presenter ever has to give up viola i'd say she could transition to radio with zero issue.

and...

Is that Tokyo Kosei? I think this might be my favorite Holst Suites recording (got the vinyl version - the bass drum is remarkable!)

Thanks! Found it and subscribed.

Always loved those. I'm sure being a tuba player and Holst being one of the few composers to write interesting tuba parts had nothing to do with it.

'pants, are you a tuba player?

Listening to the John Luther Adams Meet the Composer episode right now. This is my new favorite piece of music:

Holy cow. There's a piece in The Revenant soundtrack that quite reminds me of it.

I was. I stopped my sophomore year of college when I realized there wasn't enough time for two labs a week, rehearsals, lessons, practice time and maintaining sanity. Unfortunately, it's not an easy (or cheap) instrument to continue playing casually.

Honestly Abu, a better line would have been

"Is that a tuba in your past 'pants, or are you just happy to see Holst?".

I was a Euphonium and Tuba player up through college (almost majored in Music Education). Some days I wish I would have.

Yes, yes it would have. I simply don't have the on-demand wit of others. Gah.

Tuba (low brass) bros unite! Played Tuba in HS and one year of college (Symphonic Band, i.e. the band for non-music majors). Marched contra in a drum corps for three years, and am marching my 6th (and last) year (on contra) with the Bridgemen Alumni Corps.

They used some of Adams' Become Ocean as an element of The Revenant's score ("element" because I think Inaritu stacked some other stuff on top of it). It was also in one of the trailers. So that might explain it.

This is one of the most amazing tuba albums I've ever heard.

Fun fact: My rookie year in drum corps the contra section leader was Mike Roylance. He is now the principal tuba for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Ah, well, that totally makes sense. I imagine Inaritu was probably obsessed with Adams and told Ryuichi Sakamato to compose something in that vein.

This is the piece that I felt was inspired by The Farthest Place:

I really, really like that piece.

I bought the album The Farthest Place is on and Become Ocean and look forward to regularly listening to both.

Edit: Oh, heck yeah, Become Ocean is definitely what's behind that Revenant piece. Sweet.

More favorites from concert band...

Another old band favorite...

For Anita Sarkeesian.

FYI Season Three of Meet the Composer is currently Kickstarting. They are coming along well:)

Also, anyone got any spotify playlists or anything? Looking to meander to something new, maybe skewed 20th century.

I just found an "Alternative Classical: New York" playlist on Apple Music. Opened with Nico Muhly, so it had a good start.
